Mr. James Walter Spivia, age 96 of Russell Scenic Hwy Blairsville passed away peacefully on Monday October 12, 2015 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Spivia was born on May 11, 1919 in Union County, the son of the late Ben Spivia and the late Lilly Shuler Spiva. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and a veteran of the US Army of WWII. Walter loved fishing and coon hunting. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Rachael Ballew Spiva in 2001, a son David Spivia in 1987 and by three sisters, Hazel White, Dorothy Martin and Joann Hood, two brothers, Vernon and Clyde Spiva. Walter attended Union Baptist Church. Surviving Mr. Spivia are two sons and daughters in law, Jimmy and Ann Spivia of Blairsville, Michael and Dianna Spivia of Blairsville, five grandchildren, Teresa and Johnny Garrett, Tracey and Rick Goodall, Tori and Gerald Potts, Heather Spivia, Shelley and Brandon Young, nine great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services will be held on Thursday October 15, 2015 at 4:00 pm from Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Benny Nix and Rev. Tommy Hunt officiating. Special music will be presented by the Union Baptist Church Choir. Walter will lie in state at the church on Thursday from 3-4pm.The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Eddy Spiva, Royce Dyer, David Bryant, Danny Sullivan, Earl Sullivan and Orrin Hubbard. Interment will follow in the church cemetery where he will rest next to his beloved wife Rachael. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-9:00 pm.
