UCGOP Honors Outgoing State Representative Stephen Allison

The February meeting of the Union County Republican Party (UCGOP) was held at the Pat

Haralson Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 20. 1st Vice Chair Paul Sumberg called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone in attendance. The invocation was given by Jack McKechnie. Sumberg led the Pledge of Allegiance. Dale Allison, UCGOP Chair and several other members of the Executive Committee were absent, because they were attending Candidate Qualifying Training in Clayton, Georgia that same day.

Sumberg introduced featured speakers which included: Sheriff Mack Mason, Rick Knox, Matt Gurtler, David Barton and Bernard Fontaine.

Next, he introduced and thanked Representative Stephen Allison for his devoted service as the 9th District State Representative.

Allison responded by saying, “I want to express my appreciation to each of you for your support during my eight years in office. It has been a real honor to serve you in this capacity.  When I was first elected, my son was in elementary school. Now he’s starting his first year of high school.  Regina and I decided it’s time for me to ‘come home’ and be there year-round for my family.” Allison received a standing ovation!

Next, Sumberg reminded attendees about the Precinct Mass Meeting scheduled for Saturday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m. at the Union County Civic Center. The County Convention follows at 10:00 a.m. at the same location.

Next, he reminded everyone about the Future Leaders Scholarship Speech Contest slated for March 29, 31 (6:00 to 9:00 p.m.), and April 2 (1:00 to 3:00 p.m.) at the North Georgia Technical College.

High school students (9th to 12th grade) are participating.  The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to develop their speaking abilities while heightening their awareness of political issues. Students selected from 12 politically oriented topics.

Contests sponsors are needed. If interested, contact the UCGOP office at 706-745-1359. All donated funds are being used for scholarship awards for the winners.
