Rev. Waymon Albert Lovell, age 70, of Blairsville, GA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday Jan. 10, 2017 after an extended illness. He was born December 12, 1946, in Blairsville, GA. He was the son of Watson and Ruby Barrett Lovell.

He is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Patricia Ann Potts Lovell; three children, Tony and Danica Lovell Ball of Cherry Log, GA; Stephen and April Carney Lovell of Blairsville, GA, and Stephanie Lovell of Buford, GA. Seven grandchildren also survive.

In addition, Waymon is survived by two brothers, Frank and Sue Lovell, Gainesville, GA, and Donald and Debbie Lovell, Freeport, FL; three sisters, Brenda and Junior Burnette, Blairsville, GA; Shirley and Bob Spencer, Edmonton, KY; and Peggy Burnett, Blairsville, GA; and by three sisters-in-law, Betty Jean Lovell, Blairsville, GA; Vivian Lovell, Young Harris, GA; and Annie Lovell, Blairsville, GA.

He is also survived by mother-in-law, Ella Mae Potts Cook of Sugar Hill, GA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ben and Libby Burrell of Blairsville, GA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Randall and Lawanda Titshaw of Sugar Hill, GA; sister-in-law, Betty Woody Potts; half-sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Thomas and Debrah Gunn of Clinton Township, MI; half-brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dwain and Tammy Potts of Yale, MI; Bobby and Rhonda Potts of Richmond, MI, and step-brother-in-law Vernon and Brenda Cook of Flowery Branch, GA. A great number of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Hubert and Herbert Lovell, Jim Lovell, Ernest Lovell, and Vaughn Lovell; one sister, Clarice Lovell Nichols and her husband, J.C. Nichols; and one brother-in-law, J.W. Potts.

Waymon was so proud of his almost 40 years of preaching and pastoring. He was honored to participate in the good work of the Baptist association and was happy to call so many of his fellow preachers his dear friends. Waymon was a pastor and friend to congregations of the following churches: Fairview Baptist Church, Blairsville, GA; Youngstown Baptist Church, Blairsville, GA; Corinth Baptist Church, Suches, GA; Philadelphia Baptist Church, Blairsville, GA; South End Baptist Church, Murphy, NC; River Valley Baptist Church, Murphy, NC; Snow Hill Baptist Church, Murphy, NC; New Mount Giliead Baptist Church, Mineral Bluff, GA; and Old Liberty Baptist Church, Blairsville, GA.

He received his education in Union County Schools. He was drafted into the Army in 1966, he did his basic training at Ft. Hood, TX, and received the Machine Gun Expert Badge and Rifle Marks¬man Badge. He also received the National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Metal, Republic of Vietnam Cam¬paign Ribbon w/Device, and eventually the Purple Heart.

While in the 198th In¬fantry Brigade as a Recon Scout he achieved the rank of Sergeant (E5). After be¬ing sent to Vietnam he was severely wounded and spent many months in hospitals overseas where he received lifesaving surgeries. He then spent 11 months in the hospi¬tal at Fort Benning, GA, where he underwent several more surgeries to recover the use of his legs.

Once recovered and ac¬climated to his new life back in Blairsville, GA, he helped to restart the Disabled Amer¬ican Veterans organization in this area and served as a mem¬ber. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, and the Honor Guard. He volunteered at the Department of Family & Children Services for many years tak¬ing hundreds of people to doctors, dentists, and other various appointments as far as Augusta, GA, Asheville, NC and many other distant locations. He and his wife were the first foster parents in Union County.

Waymon was presented with a Quilt of Valor in honor of his military service in the Vietnam War on May 14, 2016, by the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild.

He thoroughly enjoyed life and spending time with family and friends; he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and being called Papaw by Kaitlyn, Chrissy, Lilly, Wyatt, Weston, Rainah, and Oliviah. Most of all he enjoyed serving the Lord and spending time in the pulpit. Waymon was known as a man who had such love for his fellow man and felt that is what Jesus would have wanted of him. He was an example to many which made them want to be better people.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 14, 2017 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harley Hunter officiating. Special music will be by the Old Liberty Church Choir. Interment followed in the Old Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday January 12, and again on Friday January 13 from 6-9 PM both nights.
