BLAIRSVILLE, Ga – The 2020 General Election is right around the corner and many are wondering the best way to cast their ballots.

In Georgia, early voting begins on October 12 and runs through October 30, 2020. In Union County, residents can vote early at the courthouse on the lower level during regular courthouse hours. Citizens will be required to wear a mask and social distance while inside the building.

The mandatory Saturday voting day is October 24. Election Day is November 3 with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Georgia residents can already request absentee ballots through the Secretary of State’s website or in person at the local board of elections. Additionally, the absentee ballot application can be submitted by mail or fax. Georgia’s Secretary of State doesn’t automatically send out ballots; voters must fill out the absentee request form beforehand.

The Secretary of State and U.S. Postal Service encourage all absentee voters to do so quickly to ensure all votes are counted. Absentee ballots may be requested at any time 180 priors to the election until the last Friday before election day.

Once receiving the ballot, voters should fill it out and mail it back in or drop it off at a local election dropbox. Voters should contact their local county registrar for drop off locations. Military or overseas voters who post their ballot on election day need to make sure it arrives within three days.

After mailing in absentee ballots, residents can check out Georgia My Voter webpage to verify that their ballot was accepted. They should look for the box labeled Absentee Ballot Request Information.

If a ballot is rejected, the county elections will contact the voter to correct the ballot. Improper signatures are one of the most reasons why a ballot is rejected.

If a ballot never arrives, voters should contact the county registrar for options. These voters might be expected to vote in person if there isn’t enough time to send a new absentee ballot. A voter who votes in person after requesting an absentee ballot will be expected to sign a document that attests, they are only voting once.
