Mrs. Dessie Wimpey Ledford: Obituary

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Dessie Wimpey Ledford, age 95, of Blairsville, who passed away on Monday, May 16, 2016 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Dessie Wimpey Ledford, age 95, was born in Union County on January 23, 1921. She was the fifth child born to James L. and Thanie Cooke Wimpey. She grew up during the Depression, learning to live off the land and be self-sufficient. Dessie’s love of gardening and outdoor work began as a child, as she helped her parents and siblings work of the family farm. Out of necessity, she learned from her mother the skill of quilting, but it became an enjoyable hobby and, later in life, she became known as a master quilt maker and many came to purchase her quilts. She took pride in being a homemaker and caring for her family. After raising her own children, she was a caretaker for children of friends and then grandchildren. She was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church. As long as her health permitted, she was a devoted worker in her church.

Dessie was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Boyd; her parents; and all of her siblings: brothers: Watson, Pat, Joseph, James, and John Wimpey and her sister Emma Dyer.

She is survived by two sons: Leon Ledford, Bob (Alma) Ledford and one daughter, Martha (Albert) Davenport. She has seven grandchildren: Carol Breazeale, Daryl Ledford, Jack Ledford, Sandra Tibbs, Amanda Ledford, Justin Davenport and Julie Payne. Also four step-grandchildren: Brian and Bret Davenport, Shelia Partin, and Sherry Langston. Ten great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday, May 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Tony Black officiating. Special music will be presented by friends of the family. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Bruce Gray, Darrell Bridges, Gerald Owenby, Carson Ownbey, Darren Bridges, and Tony Davenport.
