Union County Middle School Offers Immunizations during Meet Your Teacher

Blairsville, Ga – Union County Schools (UCS) start back August 7, and the middle school’s proving on-site immunizations during Meet Your Teacher Day on August 5.

Health Department Office Manager Glenda McGill approached Superintendent John Hill about providing immunizations for all incoming middle school students.

“They’re going to provide immunizations to the students, so the parent won’t have to miss work,” stated Hill, “We have quite a few middle school students who need immunizations at this point.”

Meet Your Teacher Day is Monday, August 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. to give students, parents, and teachers a chance to get to know each other before the year starts.

Before starting, seventh graders are required to have Tdap, meningitis, and hepatitis A vaccinations by state law. The HPV vaccine will also be offered at Meet Your Teacher Day for students.  By offering immunizations during Meet Your Teacher Day, the school helps parents get there kids ready for the year and stay healthy.

It’s also a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Parents won’t have to make an extra doctor’s appointment or take off work.

Enrollment for 2019 at UCS is also up with 67 new students entering the system over the summer. Many special needs students seek out UCS because of their dedication to providing the best special needs education in the state.

“We added some folks at the middle and everywhere else seems to be balancing out, said Special Education Director Tiffany Seltzer, “We seem to have about ten new kiddos since the end of the school year.”

UCS Police Chief Chad Deyton stated, “We’re probably going to beef up [SRO presence] the first couple days with some part-time guys to help us with traffic those first few days and add some drop-off zones.”

This should help keep traffic flowing during the first weeks of the 2019-2020 school year.
