Panthers win

BLAIRSVILLE, GA – Back-to-back fumble recoveries proved to the be difference Friday night as Union County remained unbeaten this season with a 35-14 win against Elbert County in Blairsville.

Panthers win

Senior quarterback Pierson Allison (No. 17) celebrates with freshman Wilson Walker after an Allison touchdown pass put the Panthers on top 21-14.

With the win, the Panthers (6-0, 3-0 Region 8-AA) kept pace with Rabun County for the top spot in the division and made the path the state playoffs clearer.

“I don’t have enough words for how proud I am,” Union County coach Brian Allison said after the game. “Offense, defense, special teams; we won in all three phases tonight.”

Heading into Friday night’s game, the Union County offense had been the engine that drove the Panthers into a 5-0 start.

But it was the defense that stepped up against the visiting Blue Devils (3-3, 2-1), making timely tackles and forcing three turnovers.

Two of those turnovers occurred early in the fourth quarter with the game still up for grabs.

With the score tied at 14, Elbert County was looking to answer a Union County touchdown on the previous drive.

After starting the drive from their own 41, the Blue Devils quickly moved 20 yards down the field and looked to be turning their eyes toward the end zone.

Panthers win

Senior Sawyer Drake leaves an Elbert County defensive back on the turf as he scampers for a 28-yard touchdown catch for Union County on Friday night in Blairsville.

Instead, Elbert County’s Shaun Allen put the ball on the ground and Union County junior Kaston Hemphill scooped it up to give the Panthers a first down on their own 33.

Three straight running plays, including a 22-yard scamper from junior Jonah Daniel, led to a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Pierson Allison to senior Sawyer Drake to give the home team the lead 20-14.

Junior Mason McCombs hit one of his five made point-after attempts to put Union County on top 21-14.

The Panthers would continue to build that lead for the remainder of the game. Pierson Allison, form his defensive back position, recovered a fumble on the Blue Devils’ next drive.

Two plays later, he hit McCombs with a 35-yard touchdown pass to put Union County up 28-14 with 7:44 left in the game.

On the Blue Devils’ very first play from scrimmage on the next drive, junior Clayton Lester stepped in front of a pass for an interception for the defense’s third forced turnover of the night.

History repeated itself as Allison threw another touchdown pass two plays later, this one a 24-yard strike to Drake to secure the final score at 35-14.

Early in the first half, it looked like Union County might be in trouble.

Pink Out

The annual “Pink Out” game at Union County was Friday night and players and fans alike were in the spirit.

After losing the team’s receiving-yards leader, senior Kyle Morlock, to injury on the first play from scrimmage, the Union County offense appeared to be out-of-sync.

Sideline reports from the training staff said Morlock’s injury looked to be a broken right ankle.

The loss of Morlock had the offense scrambling to figure out who would step into his shoes in the receiving rotation.

“We lost one of our best players, and it slowed us down on offense,” Brian Allison said. “But we didn’t give up. We found weaknesses and we took advantage of them.”

The first four drives ended poorly for the Panthers, with two punts, a fumble lost, and an interception.

Pink Out

Union County held the annual “Pink Out” game Friday night, and the Panthers’ student section delivered.

But it was the interception thrown by Pierson Allison that seemed to galvanize the Panthers, who began to play with a different intensity and purpose from that point on.

The defense forced an Elbert County punt on the next drive, and the offense followed suit, marching 68 yards and into the end zone to tie the game at 7 with 49 seconds left in the first half.

The touchdown drive, capped by a beautiful 19-yard pass to senior Cayden Rich, was the first of five straight scoring drives for the Panthers.

But the defense receiving the majority of the praise on the night, especially from Drake.

“I thought our defense played great and really kept us in the game early,” Drake said after the game. “They forced three turnovers, and you really can’t ask for more than that.”

Drake finished the night with 208 yards and two scores on eight catches.

Allison went 15-for-23 for 327 yards and four scores in the air.

On the ground, Daniel led the team in rushing yards again with 67, including a 21-yard touchdown run near the end of the third that tied the game at 14-14.

The win allowed the Panthers to stay neck-in-neck with Rabun County at 3-0 in region play. They are followed by Elbert County and Banks County at 2-1.

All of Region 8-AA is off next week. The Panthers return to action Oct. 18 with a visit to Banks County for another big region matchup.

Playoff

Region 8-AA Coach of the Year Brian Allison

Allison led the Panthers to an 10-2 record this season and the first state playoff victory in school history. The team’s 10 wins are the most by a Union Co. football team since the program began.

He was not the only member of the Panthers honored as the Region 8-AA All-Region team was released; 19 players were included across the first team, second team, and honorable mentions.

Mancuso

Senior John Mancuso was named the Region 8-AA Defensive Player of the Year.

Senior defensive back John Mancuso was named the Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the season with 122 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks, and was most noted for showing up and playing his best in the team’s most important moments and games this season.

Mancuso

While there were very few brights spots for the Union County Panthers in a rough, 49-7, loss to Rabun County on Friday night, there were some.

One of those, the biggest one, was the play of senior defensive back John Mancuso.

Despite going up against the top-ranked Wildcats offense, Mancuso was all over the field Friday night.

There were very few stretches when Mancuso’s name wasn’t being called over the loudspeaker for making tackles. Without Mancuso, the score could have been much worse for the Panthers, who now turn their focus to the state playoffs.

For his efforts, Mancuso is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week!

TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week – No. 11 Cayden Rich

Player of the Week, TeamFYNSports, UCHS Football

When standout wide receiver Kyle Morlock went out a month ago with a severe right ankle injury, someone was going to have to step up in the receiving corps for the Union County Panthers.

This week against Social Circle, that player proved to be senior Cayden Rich.

Rich hauled in just two catches against the Redskins, but had nearly 100 yards receiving and a big touchdown in Union County’s 41-6 win.

Rich has been a steady producer all season, catching just 20 passes but scoring four touchdowns and providing senior quarterback Pierson Allison a safety valve when his main target, senior Sawyer Drake, is locked down.

Rich, who also plays linebacker on occasion, is this week’s TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week!

They didn’t lose. It was amazing to see,” Hussion beamed, “They gelled and beat everybody. They went all the way, all the way to state finals.”

UCHS Boys played Thomasville in the final and left it all on the field. UCHS Boys lost during overtime PK kicks and logged over 11,000 miles during the tournament.

The last two weeks of the season he was voted the United Soccer Coaches Max Prep’s player of the week for the entire state of Georgia.”

Director of Custodial Services Hughes recognized Emma Nichols for donating part of her summer to help clean up the schools.

“She just loves to do this custodial work. She’s just a regular kid, but she loves to do cleaning and housekeeping stuff, and I thought now would be a really good time to recognize her for the hard work that she has done,” said Hughes.

Emma Nichols donates her time to assist custodians in cleaning up the school.

Assistant Superintendent David Murphy commented,” Work-force readiness, soft skills those are the things that we’re hoping to teach, this little lady is doing it on her own, and I want to thank her parents for giving her the opportunity.”

Player of the Week, Sports, UCHS Football

Union County senior quarterback Pierson Allison went 14-for-24 with 230 yards and four touchdowns in the air, while adding 34 yards rushing and an interception on defense in the Panthers’ 33-14 victory at Fannin County on Friday night.

For his efforts, Allison is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week.

While he had a standout performance, Allison gave all the credit to his teammates and his coaches for the Panthers getting their sixth-straight victory over the area-rival Rebels.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. I don’t think one special person did anything better than others. I think we did it as a team, and it was a great win,” Allison said after the game.

Despite the Panthers begin called for a lot of penalties on the night, two of which took away touchdowns, Allison said the way the players are coached allowed them to overcome it and stay focused.

“I credit the coaches. They keep up in line and keep us focused on the task at hand,” Allison said.

Pipe bust forces basketball schedule changes

Union County High School

A hyrdonic pipe burst in the sprinkler system outside of the Union County High School gymnasium caused administrators to make a quick decision with regard for the safety of students, spectators and school administration.  The East Hall High School basketball teams were scheduled to play at UCHS, but with water leaking and likely to freeze on the sidewalk outside the entrance of the facility; the decision to reschedule was an obvious choice.

“The pipe broke before East Hall got there,” UCHS athletic director Bryan Allison told TeamFYNSports Wednesday afternoon.  The good news:  It’s already been fixed.

The bad news?  Not necessarily bad – but the games have been rescheduled for tonight (Wed) at East Hall High School in Gainesville.  The varsity girls tip-off at 5pm, with the boys game following at 6:30pm.  TeamFYNSports will provide courtside coverage and a full story about the game will be up tomorrow.

Panthers Wrestling: Tritt making history

Union County High School

Isaac Tritt made history last week.  With his 4th-place finish at the AAA Sectional wrestling tournament last weekend, Tritt became first person in Union County history to ever advance beyond Area competition.  He now has an opportunity to be the first Union County High School student to place at the state tournament.

Tritt started playing soccer when he was only four years old.  In the 7th grade, he began wrestling.  By his freshman year, he decided to dedicate 100% of his attention to the mat; and as a junior, his commitment is paying off.

Tritt wrestled in the 138-lb class his freshman year, before moving up to the 145-lb class last year.  The 7-lb weight gain has given him more strength in the clinch without sacrificing speed in scrambles or shots from outside.

TeamFYNSports asked Tritt how he’s handling the reality that he’s making history, and he said, “It feels great knowing I was able to pave the road to state. The hard work was definitely worth it.”

Tritt said the sport of wrestling has taught him more than just how to throw or pin someone – it’s built character.

“When life gets hard you just have to keep pushing forward, this is something the coaches have instilled in this program,”  Tritt told TeamFYNSports in a recent interview.

He said that he’s looking to push the pace of each match at the state tournament, and he is looking to dominate his opponents.  Recognizing that the Panthers wrestle in one of the toughest regions/areas in the state of Georgia, Tritt may see some familiar faces as he advances through the tournament this weekend.

TeamFYNSports would like to congratulate the Union County wrestling program and we wish Isaac Tritt all the best this weekend.

UCHS XC First Meet, First Win!

Union County High School Cross Country

Girls & Boys

August 24, 2017

Location: Meeks Park, Blairsville, GA

BOTH the Union County Girls & Boys teams placed FIRST at yesterday’s cross country meet!

It was the first meet of the season for the Panthers and also a more challenging route than previous years.  This years route consisted of a full lap around Meeks Park and then the ‘mountain ’ on the backside.  Before the meet I was told by several parents that because of the added challenge, run times have been slower than normal.

The girls race began sharply at 4PM.  The Panthers were accompanied by 8 other schools for this race.  These schools include: Lumpkin County, Murray County, Hayesville, Towns County, Fannin County, Rabun County, Gilmer County and Early College (TCCC).

The first runner to cross the finish line for the girls race was Union’s own Sophomore Zoe Sanchez with a time of 22:06!!

Pictured: Zoe Sanchez

How to see which team/school wins the meet: The first five runners from each team to cross the finish line receive points that correspond to their place.  For instance, since Sanchez finished 1st overall, she would receive a #1 point once she crosses the finish line.  At the end, you would add up the points and the team with the lowest score wins.

Union Girls scores: Zoe Sanchez (1) 22:06, Latty Ryals (4) 23:36, Lexie Ochoa (11) 25:24, Emmie Schakat (14) 25:41 & Sadie Underwood (24) 26:50 for a total team score of 54 points.  There were a total of 78 runners in the girls race.

Following the girls race were the boys.  The boys ran the same course as the girls (Meeks Park Loop & Mountain).  In this race there were 115 runners – 37 more than in the girls; yet another challenge.

Coming in second overall behind Murray County and #1 for the Panthers was Senior Lance Underwood with a time of 18:03!!  As Underwood crossed the finish line and was handed his point he hugged the former cross country coach – what a guy!

Pictured: Lance Underwood & Jackie Hughes

The Panthers boys team also came in 1st overall for their race!  Union Boys scores: Lance Underwood (2) 18:03, Luke Gambrell (4) 18:41, Timothy Murphy (11) 20:15, Will Harkins (13) 20:27 & Colby Ives (14) 20:31 for a total team score of 44 points.

Congratulations to the Panthers for their first WIN of the season!  The Panthers will travel to the Chestatee War Eagle Invitational on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 and begin running at 5:30PM.  So come on!  Get out of town, get some good food & come support your Panthers!
