Panthers Handle Phoenix in Game Four of a Five-Game Road Stretch

Wednesday, January 15th, the 15-2 Union County Panthers traveled to Sonoraville High School to take on the 6-10 Sonoraville Phoenix in a Region 7 AA matchup. Coming off a blowout win against Rockmart the week before; Union County came out hot as Houston Henry started the game with back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Panthers out to a quick lead.

Henry scored five more in the first, followed by eight combined points from Combs, Marevka, and Young to end the first quarter leading 19-13. The second quarter was no different for the Panthers, as they scored another 19, but this time led by ten points from Hayden Hughes. At the half, Union led 38-23, holding Sonoraville to only ten points in the second quarter. Sonoraville was inspired to start the second half by implementing a full-court press to slow down the Panther’s offense. The press caused havoc, but not enough to hold the Panther’s offense down. The Panthers finished the second half outscoring Sonoraville 37-36 behind nine points from Hughes and Young, seven from Henry, and four from Combs, Hogsed, and Marevka. The game concluded with a final score of 75-59 and another Union County victory to improve their record to 16-2.

 

Houston Henry was the game’s high scorer with 22 points, followed by 19 from Hayden Hughes and 17 from Maddox Young.

Other scorers in the game were Kaden Combs (8 points), Vince Marevka (6 points), and Ethan Hogsed (4 points).

The Panthers look ahead to another region matchup on Friday, January 17th, as they travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.
