Virgie Carie Dye, age 93, of Morganton, GA, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 25, 2020. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at 2:00 pm, from the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Morganton, GA. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and Wednesday, January 29, 2020, from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Glenda Sue Stamey, age 81 of Epworth, Ga passed away on Sunday, January 26th, 2020, at her home in Epworth, Ga. Mrs. Stamey was born on March 21st, 1938, in Epworth, Ga, to her late parents Roy Querry and Doris Fisher. Glenda was of the Baptist faith, was a member of First Baptist Church of McCaysville. Mrs. Stamey enjoyed being a part of the Georgia Mountain Classic Car Club in the Blue Ridge, who enjoy their classic cars. She also enjoyed cross-stitching. She is preceded in death by her parents Roy Querry and Doris Fisher, and sister Linda Gail Querry.
Survivors include her husband, Fairley Stamey, daughter, Cindy Mauldin (Ron), grandchildren, Kelsey Appleby (Tré), Kayla Mauldin, Zachary Mauldin, and Rachael Bonner (Brian).
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 29th, 2020, at 2:00 pm from the Chapel of Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with Rev Matthew McDaniel and Rev. Danny Collis officiating. Interment will follow in the Epworth First Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers: William Querry, Terry Bohannon, Stanley Simmons, Tony Daves, Zachary Mauldin, and Gerald Long. Honorary Pallbearers: Georgia Mountain Classic Car Club, Amanda Ware, and Max Pittman.

Rose Louise Schwartz, age 80 of Morganton, Georgia passed away January 25, 2020, at Home. Rose was born December 17, 1939, in Lowell, MA to the late Joseph DeCosta and the late Mildred DeCosta. A member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Rose. Rose enjoyed crocheting and playing dominos. She also enjoyed bowling and a good drag race. She was preceded in death by mother, Mildred Reed, father, Joseph DeCosta, Brother, John DeCosta, son, Steven Schwartz.
Survivors include husband, Frederick Schwartz, Brother, Joseph M DeCosta, Brother, Richard DeCosta, daughter, Sheila St.Germain, grandchild, Amanda Soucy as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Richard Alan Smith, age 71 of Highway 325, Blairsville, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2020 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Smith was born on May 28, 1948 in New York City, NY., the son of the late Francis Smith & late Joan Prodan. Richard spent most of his free time outside, where he did a lot of fishing, hiking, camping, and gardening. He also dearly loved his special dog, Kiley. He is preceded in death by a brother; Francis “Gary” Smith Jr. Richard was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include his loving wife and best-friend of 51 years, Stephanie Marie Smith of Blairsville, daughter & significant other Stacey Perrone & Richard Colazzo of Cape Coral, FL., daughter & son-in-law, Christina & George Wolf of Inverness, FL., three brothers & 3 sister-in-law; Robert & Maggie Smith of Barngat, NJ., James & Virginia Smith of Blairsville, Dennis & Michelle Smith of Mayetta, NJ., two sisters and a brother-in-law, Deborah & Dan Lewis of Englishtown, NJ., Linda Blanchard of Blairsville, and four grandchildren; Mark Nocco Jr., Nicholas Nocco, Jared Muhsgnug, and Joseph Wolf.
A memorial service will be held at the Faith Presbyterian Church of Blue Ridge, GA with Dr. James Simpson officiating at a later date and will be announced. Johnny Max Hayes: Obituary

Mr. Johnny Max Hayes, age 73 of Blairsville, GA passed away early Sunday morning January 26th, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Hayes was born on March 1st, 1946 in Monroe, GA to his late parents John Henry Hayes and Nellie Ree (Morrell) Hayes. Johnny worked for General Motors for most of his life, where he was a supervisor. He loved to fish, camp, travel, and the great outdoors and was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan. He was a loving husband, father, and PaPaw. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Sybil Ponder, Lynda Farmer, Robbie Lee, and brother, Dillard Hayes.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday January 30th, 2020 at 2:00pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Rumfelt officiating. Military honors will be performed by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol Underwood Hayes of the home in Blairsville, GA; children, Lynn Cameron of Buford, GA, Cindy (Paige Hood) Hayes of Monroe, GA, Patrick (Laura) Hayes of Florida, Robert (Mary) Arp of East Point, GA, Richard (Stacy) Arp of Blue Ridge, GA; grandchildren, Julie Floyd, Anna Roper, Natalie Jackson, Wyatt Cameron, Matthew Harmon, Isabel Arp, James Arp, and Alana Arp; 4 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mabel Jones of Bethlehem, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 4:00pm until 8:00pm on Wednesday January 29th at the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville.

L.H. “Toby” Laster: Obituary
Obituaries January 25, 2020Mr. L.H. “Toby” Laster, age 85 of Highway 325 Blairsville passed away peacefully on Wednesday January, 22, 2020 in the North East Georgia Medical Center of Gainesville following an extended illness. Mr. Laster was born on July 23, 1934 in Moultrie, GA., the son of the late John Green Laster & late Lucy Mae Hall. Toby was a Moultrie YMCA Volunteer before moving to Blairsville in 1964. He was a 50 year member of the Blairsville Church of Nazarine. He and his wife were also charter members of the church. He served as Union County softball coach for many years as well as owning and operating Toby’s Studio for over 30 years. He is preceded in death by six brothers, Arthur, Furman, J.C., Bill, James, and Allen Laster.
Surviving Mr. Laster is his loving wife and best-friend of 57 years, Wanda Laster of Blairsville, a daughter & son-in-law Michelle & Anthony Roberts of Demorest, GA., son & daughter-in-law Michael & Marina Laster of Plantation, FL., three grandchildren; Mason Roberts, Trey Roberts, and Anya Kostenko. Several nieces & nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Friday January 24, 2020 at 7:00pm with Rev. Mark Handy officiating. Special music will be presented by Candi Tanner. Interment will follow in the Meadow View Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 4:00pm-7:00pm prior to the services. Hildegard Hedwig Zimmel: Obituary
Obituaries January 25, 2020Ms. Hildegard Hedwig Zimmel, age 77 of Green Road Young Harris, formerly of Roswell, GA., passed away peacefully on Friday January 24, 2020 in the Hayesville House following an extended illness. Ms. Zimmel was born on August 3, 1942 in Vienna, Austria, the daughter of the late Karl Zimmel & late Hilde Zimmel-Binderhofer. A lot of her free time was spent horse-back riding; she also was a proud owner of three Dobermans. Hildegard also co-owned the beauty shop “La Coiffeur” in Atlanta with her sister for over 40 years. Ms. Zimmel was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include a sister & brother-in-law, Traude & Bruce Shann of Young Harris, sister & brother-in-law, Sigrid & Hansi Adam of Vienna, Austria, and a nephew, Herbert Kral of Vienna, Austria.

Obituaries January 25, 2020Mrs. Nancy Clements Mays, age 84 of Blairsville, GA passed away on January 23, 2020. She was born on January 18, 1936 in Jonesboro, AR., to the late William Wiley & late Marjorie Martin Clements.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John Elder Mays. She is survived by her son, William Ernest Mays and wife, Debbie of Eatonton, GA; daughter, Evelyn Mays Cleary and husband Charles of Chesapeake City, MD; and son John David Mays and wife Katy of Stillwater, OK; five grandchildren: Lindsay Daniel Telecki and husband Paul, Jonathan Daniel and wife Christie, Jennifer Marie Cleary; Sara Evelyn Mays and John Elder Mays II; great grand-daughters Olivia Rose Telecki; and Sophia Lily Telecki; great-grandson Brooks Montgomery Daniel.

Mr. Joseph G. MacNeill, AKA Garfield J. MacNeill, age 79 of Hiawassee, GA passed away on Tuesday Morning January 21st, 2020.
Mr. MacNeill was born on April 27th, 1940 in Bralorne, BC, Canada to the late Garfield J. and Mabel Morris MacNeill. Joseph worked as an Operating Engineer and for various construction companies for most of his life. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, enjoyed working outside, but loved traveling most of all. Joseph was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Per Mr. MacNeill’s request, there are no services planned at this time.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Karen F. MacNeill of the home in Hiawassee, GA; daughter, Kimberly (Corey) Boswell of Jefferson, GA; grandchildren, Brooke, Bre, and Behr Boswell; and a brother, Neil MacNeill of Seattle, Washington.

Essie Gwendolyn “Gwen” Johnson, age 76 of Morganton, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020 at home. She was born June 18, 1943 in Morganton, Ga. to the late Clories Hughes and the late Ester M. Hughes. She was a dedicated member of Hemptown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Linda, Clidasue, Anita, and Charlene. Gwen was a life long resident of Fannin county and loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Survivors include husband, Buford Johnson, daughter, Cora (Michael) Dilbeck, daughter, Terri Bentley, son, Greg Stamey, son, David Stamey. As well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday January 27, 2020 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. David Whitner officiating at Hemptown Baptist Church. Interment will follow in The Hemptown Church Cemtery.

Michael Paul Bone “Bones”: Obituary

Michael Paul Bone “Bones”, 52, went home unexpectedly to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020. He was living in Bryson City at the time of his death. He had also resided in Cherokee and Murphy. Bones was an extraordinary young man and spent most of his life working. He loved God, his friends and family, enjoyed movies, music and was a big Johnny Cash fan. He was preceded in death by all grandparents; father, Clifford Bone Sr.; mother, Jeanette Bone; and brother-in-law, David Hembree.
He is survived by his sister, Edie Hembree and fiance Mark Hamilton of Murphy; two brothers, Clifford Bone Jr. of Waynesville, and Ricky Bone and wife Leslie of Toccoa, Ga.; nephews, Tommy, Eric and Cory Roberson of Murphy, Robin, Timmy, Jonny, Teddy and Christopher Bone; nieces, Starry Richard, Esther, Abigale, Kimberly and Autumn Bone; and good friends, Joe Fowler of Marble and Jimmy Smith of Bryson City.
Michael “Bones” worked at Harrah’s Cherokee for years, but he lost his benefits and insurance. Mike doesn’t have to worry about that anymore, as he has a new body and is probably looking down on all of us right now. He most recently worked at Harrah’s with HSS. Mike “Bones” also worked 14 years at Coats American. His first job was at The Sirloin Steak House, where he was treated like family, in Murphy at age 16. He rented his own apartment, worked while attending and graduated from Murphy High School. Michael was an extraordinary young man.
We have had to delay his burial and services. In lieu of flowers, all donations no matter how small are appreciated to help the family with memorial and burial expenses. An account is being set up at United Community Bank in Murphy, and there is also a Go Fund Me page via Facebook. The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Second Baptist Church in Murphy. Interment will follow on Sunday in the Bentwood Cemetery in Culberson, NC.

Raymond David Fogelson: Obituary
Obituaries January 22, 2020Dr. Raymond David Fogelson, age 86 of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday January 20, 2020 following a short illness. Dr. Fogelson was born on August 23, 1933 in Redbank, New Jersey, the son of the late William Fogelson and late Pearl Schwartz.
Raymond loved living part time in the mountains of Blairsville. He was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Chicago where his field of research and study included Native Americans in Cherokee, NC and in Oklahoma. He is preceded in death in 1998 by his beloved sister, Florence Blumberg, of Blairsville, Georgia
Survivors include his loving wife & best-friend, Karen Luckritz of Chicago, nephew Fred Blumberg of Lakewood New Jersey, niece Judy Blumberg of Lakeville Ohio, cousins Bette Feinstein of New Jersey and Andrew Schwarz of Lake Forest, California, two step-children, Lisa Luckritz of Schaumburg, Illinois, Brian Luckritz of Maryville, Indiana, and two step grandchildren, Charlotte Peterson & Aaron Peterson.

Hazel Brown Chipps: Obituary
Obituaries January 22, 2020Mrs. Hazel Brown Chipps age 92 of Hiawassee GA formerly of Gainesville passed away peacefully on Saturday January 18, 2020 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Chipps was born on Sept. 6, 1927 in Gainesville, GA., the daughter of the late James Wiley Brown and the late Inez Dellihah Taylor Brown. Hazel loved reading, writing and was always a loving soul who never met a stranger and always had a smile for everyone she met. She enjoyed her nineteen years at the Chatuge Nursing Home and came to love all of the staff who treated her as family. She was preceded in death by her parents and also a sister, Hattie Lou Brown. Hazel was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Chipps are a multitude of cousins who deeply loved her and all of the staff at the Chatuge Nursing Home who will miss her smiles and loving character.
A memorial service will be held at a later date with interment to follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville where she will rest next to her family. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home Activities Department in Hazel’s memory.

James was not only a big football fan, with his favorite team being Clemson, but in his high school he had set his own records at football. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, and in his day, he raced short tracks all over South & North Carolina. He was known & loved for the shows he gave the audiences and would spin his competitors out frequently! Fishing, boating, and golfing became later in life loves. James had lived in Hayesville for the past 29 years and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his ex-wife and forever friend, Jamie Burbage of Blairsville, three sons, Derrick Burbage, of North Charleston, SC., & Andrew Burbage of Cleveland, GA.( Mother Cathy Mixon of Charleston SC), & Barry Tabor Jr. of Appling, GA., two daughters and a son-in-law, Anna Burbage of Blairsville, Christina & Michael Martin of Blairsville, GA., three sisters, Carolyn Dewes & Gloria Mullinax both of Moncks Corner, SC., Theresa Miley of Columbia, SC., and two grandchildren, Trent “Derrick” Burbage & Andromeda Burbage, with many nieces & nephews. Scott Brown, nephew & Uncle Pedro’s loyal friend, also resides in Moncks Corner, SC.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 22, 2020 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Tommy Jones officiating. Special music will be presented by Sandi Carringer. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Kal Kindy , Tim Barrett, Wayne Dills Jr. and Keith Dills. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery where he will rest next to his beloved wife Marria. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10-11:00 am.
