Blairsville, GA – Dr. Fred Rayfield, Superintendent of Union County Schools, announced yesterday at the August BOE Workshop Meeting that Union County Schools will be closed the day of the rare Total Eclipse, Monday, August 21, 2017, due to safety and security concerns. Rayfield said he expects a large influx of people and, by extension, a great deal of traffic on the roads which could cause delays for school buses and mobility headaches for parents and students alike. He said UCS will open several parking lots around the school campus as viewing areas for the public. All school buildings will be locked and School Resource Officers (SRO’s) will be on duty throughout the event. For information on which parking lots will will be available for eclipse viewing, please call the Union County Chamber of Commerce at (706) 745-5789 or (877) 745-5789. It was stated at the July BOE Meeting that the stadium might be available, but the school had decided not to open the stadium for the event.
