The funeral for Roger Allen Dyer Sr. will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Old Liberty Baptist Church, 74 John England Rd, Blairsville, GA with Harley Hunter officiating. Mr. Dyer died Sunday, April 2.
The family will receive family and friends on Wednesday from 5 – 8 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home, 119 Murphy Hwy, Blairsville, GA .
Roger Allen Dyer Sr. was born in Blairsville on February 13, 1939 to Worth and Emma Dyer. He was raised in Blairsville where he attended Harmony Grove Elementary School and graduated from Union County High School, class of 1957. He left Blairsville to attend North Georgia College. After graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. He entered active duty in January 1961. During his military career, he served in Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Jackson, SC, Panama Canal Zone, back to Ft. Jackson for Advanced Officer School, Republic of Vietnam with the U.S. Combat Infantry Unit, ROTC instructor in Boonville, MO, and Ft. Riley, KS, returned to Vietnam as an advisor to the Vietnamese, Ft. McPherson, GA, Frankfurt and Fulda Germany. He retired from active duty in 1977. After his service in the military, he worked in metro Atlanta real estate as a licensed real estate broker. Mr. Dyer returned home to Blairsville in 2010. After returning to Blairsville, he enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved to plant and watch his flower and vegetable gardens grow. He also enjoyed sharing his vegetables with family and friends. He loved his church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He spent countless hours each week studying and preparing his weekly lesson. He also coordinated mission activities for the church. Working with his church family each year, they packed backpacks for Appalachian children in areas of need. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, he and his church family provided 12-15 families with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. He shopped for and delivered the meals. He also served as the prayer team leader for the Nottely River Association.
Mr. Dyer is survived by his children, Pam Pitts of Lawrenceville, GA, Allen Dyer Jr., Loganville, GA, and Jon Dyer, El Paso, TX; his brothers and sisters and their families: Susie Freeman, Melvin Dyer, Kenneth Dyer, Shirley Dyer, and Sonny Dyer; his son-in-law Keith Pitts; daughters-in-law LeeAnn Dyer and Patricia Dyer; his grandchildren Shawn Bachtel, Brandon Bachtel, Brittney Peters and husband Chris Peters, Taylor Melton and husband Spencer Melton, Tyler Dyer and wife Susana Dyer, Michael Pitts, Austin Dyer, Alex Dyer, JulieAnn Dyer,; his great grandchildren Brantley Peters and Penelope Melton; and many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Pat Dyer; brother, John Dyer; and parents.
