Howard Bascom “Ty” Cobb, age 84, of Blairsville, passed away early Friday morning, April 21, 2017 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.
Ty was born in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Ancil Bascom Cobb and Myrtle Cobb. He lived in Blairsville full time for the past 18 years and was an active member of First United Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband of 62 years to Shirley Cobb. He was a loving father and grandfather and faithful friend to many.
Ty had a lifelong passion for aviation. Beginning with his service in the Air Force serving as a control tower operator in the Korean War. He went on to work for many years as an air traffic controller for the FAA and then for several aviation supply businesses and finally enjoying several years of part-time “work” for the City of Blairsville at the municipal airport.
Ty was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the UN Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Japan Occupation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal.
Just last year, he was presented a “Quilt of Valor”, a patriotic quilt awarded him for his service to our nation. Each Quilt of Valor is unique to it’s recipient and stitched with loving thoughts of honor and respect that veterans deserve.
In recent years, in addition to being involved in church activities, Ty served as chairman for Second Wind Dreams working closely with the activity department at Union County nursing home. He and Shirley and other local “Dream Weavers” so enjoyed enhancing the quality of life for those living at the nursing home. Continuing with his love of aviation, he was an active member of the Piedmont Silver Eagles in Charlotte NC.
