Mr. Claude Thomas Carney Jr. known as Junior age 87 of Blairsville passed away on Thursday July 6, 2017 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Carney was born on Oct. 9, 1929 in Akron, OH., the son of the late Claude Thomas Carney Sr. and the late Alma Foster Carney. He was a lifelong resident of Union County and was a veteran of the US Army. Claude enjoyed hunting, playing the mandolin and guitar and making music. He was known for working on small engines. He was also known for singing bass in the church choir. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Claude was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Payne and two brothers, Frank and Mickey Carney. Mr. Carney was a member of New Union Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Carney are his loving wife and best friend of sixty five years, Lorene Jean Nichols Carney of Blairsville, three daughters and two sons in law, Shari and Gordon Spears, Gloria and Richard Griggs all of Blairsville, Beth Carney -Smith of Social Circle, GA., one son and daughter in law, Rex and Myra Carney of Dallas, GA., two sisters and one brother in law, Judy Burkholter of Smyrna, Janet and Johnny Phillips of Smyrna, six grandchildren, Hanna Spells, Colin Griggs, Codie McClure, Michael Cory Smith, Allen Carney and Jessica Spears, one great grandson, Matthew McClure, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 8, 2017 at 3:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Gary Rogers and Rev. Harrison Bradley officiating. A eulogy will be given by Tim Grizzle and Marty Payne. Special music will be presented by his Blue Grass buddies from Carney Hall. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Winston Chambers, Richard Reese, Milton Akins, Marty Payne, Michael Payne and Tim Grizzle. Interment will follow in the New Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral Home on Friday evening from 6-8:00 pm.
