Mr. William “Howard” Nichols Sr. age 95 of Young Harris passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday July 20, 2017 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Howard was born on March 17, 1922 in Young Harris, GA., the son of the late John Adam Nichols and the late Hazel Handy Nichols. He was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County. He had served on the DFCS Board for over thirty years. He had served as Deacon for over sixty years. He enjoyed antique automobiles, working in his woodworking shop and camping. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and also a son, William Howard Nichols Jr. in 1998 and a sister, Euna Nichols Penland. Howard was a Deacon and member of Revival Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Nichols are his loving wife and best friend of seventy two years, Irma Beck Nichols of Young Harris, one daughter and son in law, Linda and Richard Welling of Young Harris, one sister, Nina White of Pontiac, MI., brother in law, Richard Beck of Paris, OH., three grandchildren, Angela and Eugene Vinez, Aaron and Kimberly Welling, John Adam Nichols II, nine great grandchildren, a host of his church family, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Monday July 24, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Revival Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Seay, Rev, Tim Renshaw and Rev. Kevin Garrett officiating. Howard will lie in state at the church on Monday from 1-2:00 pm. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Scott Harris, Paul Hamilton, Tony Young, Sammy Hughes, David Hemphill and Randy Thomas. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Joe Stinson, Sam Nichols, Terry Davenport, Adam Nichols, Aaron Welling and Gene Vinez. Interment will follow in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-9:00 pm. Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of the arrangements.
