Blairsville, GA – Union County Sole Commissioner Lamar Paris convened his August Monthly Commissioner’s Meeting on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the Union County Court House to a packed house, literally, of Pickelball players.

Clay Pilgrim, CPA

First on the Agenda was an audit report by Clay Pilgrim of Rushton and Company, Certified Public Accountants. After an introduction, Pilgrim proceeded to say that he and his company were issuing an ‘unmodified’ or clean audit report. In layman’s terms, that means there were no discrepancies found and the books were deemed in good order. Pilgrim went on to briefly describe some of the reports.

Paris awarded several Substance Abuse Grants to representatives of several organizations: RITAS Ministries, HOUR Ministries, New Hope Counseling, Hope Against Heroine, and Union County Family Connections.

Marion Snyder addressed the Meeting to thank Commissioner Paris,

Stanley Wallace of the First United Methodist Church, Larry Conley, UC Director of Parks and Recreation, the Union County School Board, and all other supporters for their help in making the Pickelball Club solvent and viable. Paris said he has wanted to build a gym with Pickelball facilities and that it may happen by next year or the year after.

Betty Turner, a Union County resident, addressed the Meeting regarding a Gun Ordinance, or rather, the lack of one. Turner said she owns firearms and is by no means an anti-gun person. However, Turner said she has a neighbor and former friend that target shoots a massive amount on his property for up to two hours at a time. She said that it is both inconsiderate and a nuisance to the neighborhood and urged Paris to create an ordinance addressing this issue. Paris responded that he agreed with Turner and that he will most definitely investigate the possibility of a noise or firearms ordinance if he is unable to convince the neighbor to be more considerate.
