Mr. John Hoyt Hamby age 97 of Gardner Spiva Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home on Friday April 13, 2018 following a brief illness. Mr. Hamby was born on April 11, 1921 in Union County, the son of the late Manley Hamby and the late Nora Allison Hamby. He was a veteran of the US Army of WWII. Mr. Hamby loved gardening, farming, spending time with his family and his church. He also loved baseball being an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Anna Belle Penland, Jessie Jackson and Pauline Hamby, four brothers, Cecil, Manley, Loy and Henley Hamby also one great great grandchild Cade Tyler Marshall. Mr. Hamby was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church.

Hoyt entered the US Army January 5, 1943. He trained in the Military Police and was in several combat zones during WWII.  His medals include the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the European/African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 bronze stars.

Surviving Mr. Hamby are his loving wife and best friend, Sue Stephens Hamby of Blairsville, two sons and daughters in law, Johnny and Charlene Hamby, Dale Hamby and LaRue, four daughters and three sons in law, Linda and Dayton Dyer, Peggy and Stanley Bryson, Debbie Sparks, Traci and Ricky Owenby all of Blairsville, sister in law, Cricket Tanner of Blairsville, fourteen grandchildren, Tammy, Tonya, Sandy, Penny, Scotty, Stacy, Casey, Crystal, Stephanie, Josh, Caleb, Kyle, Kody and Kolt, twenty two great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Monday April 16, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Winfred Pitts, Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Bob Bone officiating. Special music will be presented by Dayton and Stacy Dyer. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Scotty Hamby, Casey Bryson, Josh Sparks, Caleb Sparks, Kyle Owenby, Kody Owenby and Kolt Owenby, honorary pallbearers will be Kainan King and Luke Collins. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors by the North GA Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Shady Grove Church Building Fund or Shady Grove Church Cemetery Fund in memory of Mr. Hamby. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-9:00 pm.
