Robert Michael Schaaf: Obituary
Obituaries June 29, 2018
Robert Michael Schaaf, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on June 26, 2018. Robert was born in Akron, Ohio, in August 1936. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1958 in Germany. He received a degree in Math from the University of Akron and an MBA from Florida Atlantic University.
Robert worked for Eastern Airlines in Miami, Florida, as a Systems Analyst and Scheduling Manager and retired in 1991. He greatly enjoyed the challenges of performing the complex system programming needed to adapt IBM mainframe computers to support airline operations. After moving to Blairsville, Georgia, in 1993, he joined the Union County Road Department as a clerk and database administrator – a supposedly short-term employment which lasted 17 years. Robert loved this job and the employees with whom he worked.
Robert was predeceased by his parents Raymond Michael and Elizabeth Naomi Schaaf, an infant brother, George, and his beloved beagle Bentley. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Edith Carolyn Schaaf (Gardiner) and by his daughters and son-in-laws Peggy and Bryan Thomas, Diane Schaaf, Laurie and Charles Black, Mary Louise and William Romano, and Karen Schaaf, and his son and daughter-in-law Robert and Melissa Schaaf, sister Mary Louise Fromm. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday July 7th at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Father Gaurav Shorff. He will be interred at the Veterans Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on Monday July 9, 2018. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association or the Salvation Army. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1-2:00 pm.
Robert was well-loved by all who met and knew him. His favorite past-time in retirement was eating breakfast and jawboning with the folks at the Griddle Cafe & Deli in Blairsville.
Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of the arrangements. You may sign the family guest book and send condolences online at www.mounntainviewfuneralhome.com
