BLAIRSVILLE, Ga – Union County Commission reapplied for a grant with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the United States Department of Transportation(DOT) to partially fund the transportation system.

The county annual applies for the grant which provides around half the funding to run the two, 10-person passenger vans. All residents of Union can utilize the transit system for a nominal fee: $3 for the first mile and $0.50 for each additional mile. Riders under six are free.

Union County Transportation officials advise riders call a day ahead to make an appointment for van pick up. Vans are air-conditioned, equipped with hydraulic chair lifts, and handicap accessible.  Riders under 12 must be accompanied by an adult 18 or over. Also, children under six must have a safety seat provided in order to ride.

Sole Commissioner Lamar Paris commended the service saying it’s a great way to assist those who have no other means of transportation. Anyone can be on time and make their doctor’s appointments, go to the grocery store, or other locations within county limits.

The Union County Transportation System office is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m.  to 4:30 p.m. and those interested can book a ride by calling (706) 439-6050.
