Halloween canceled

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga – Halloween on the Square will not be back in 2021 because of COVID-19 currently peaking in Southern states.

However, Lake Nottely Marina is hosting a three-night event to celebrate the spooky season. The event will begin on Friday, October 29 and lasts through Sunday, October 31. The marina is asking that trick-or-treaters only attend one night of festivities to make sure there’s enough candy for everyone.

Parents and children are encouraged to come in costume. All children must have an adult accompanying them on the property. The trick-or-treat area and parking are one way in and out.

The marina encourages everyone to be respectful and watchful of children, especially in the parking lot.

They’re currently accepting candy donations from the public. Any businesses interested in participating should contact Lake Nottely Marina.

Scarecrowville is still coming to downtown Blairsville, so everyone make sure to check out their favorites.

Downtown Development Authority Director Darren Harper stated online, “Please keep in mind that the City of Blairsville’s leadership is taking a very cautious approach to events that draw large crowds.  All of us, including the Mayor & City Council, would like to see things return to ‘normal’…..we just aren’t there quite yet.  And if you’re like me…..you probably know someone who’s been negatively impacted by the virus or worse yet, have lost someone dear to you.  My point is that in times like these, the wellbeing of our families, friends, coworkers and volunteers is a major consideration in deciding not to host events where large crowds tend to be.  So I hope that you’ll be understanding as we once again are faced with canceling events for the time being.”

The Taste of the Mountains is also canceled in part because restaurants are having trouble finding staff. This time of year is the busiest for the mountains and businesses don’t have the capacity to stretch their staff.

The Sorghum parade and square dance are canceled too, but the Sorghum Festival in Meeks Park is still moving ahead for the second and third weekends in October.
