Lady Panthers Fall to Sonoraville on the Road

By Wright Hogsed

The 11-6 Lady Panthers, led by coach Thomas Nelson, traveled to Sonoraville High School on Wednesday, January 15th, to face the 14-2 Sonoraville Phoenix in a region matchup. The Lady Panthers jumped out to an early lead led by Senior Ariel McCarter scoring six of ten first quarter points for Union.

The Lady Panther’s 10-6 first-quarter lead did not last long after the second quarter began. Sonoraville seniors Erin Garland and Layla Townsend combined for 14 points in the second quarter to take the lead at half up 25-20. The offensive surge by the Lady Phoenix did not stop in the second half, with Garland, Harper, Hall, and Wallraven combining for eight 3-pointers and a total of 35 second-half points.

The same did not happen for the Lady Panthers as they struggled offensively, only scoring 14 second-half points as they fell to the Phoenix 60-34. A silver lining from the loss for the Lady Panthers was that they got Senior Katelyn Brown back from an injury. Brown has been a key piece for Union for the past few years, and it certainly will be a big advantage having her back for the rest of the season. The Lady Panthers fall to 11-7 and look ahead to another region matchup Friday @ Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.
