Col. William Harwood Loomis age 88 of Tipton Heights Hiawassee passed away peacefully on Thursday January 7, 2016 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home following an extended illness. Col. Loomis was born on Oct. 5, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA., the son of the late Henry Harlow Loomis and the late Elizabeth Sigler Loomis. Col. Loomis retired from the US Air Force in 1973 having served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He stared his Military career in the Navy than switched to the Air Force. A few of his life accomplishments include; an appointment to the US Naval Academy, was the first graduate instructors at the Air Force Academy and retired from the Air Force as a Colonel and worked on the NASA Moon Project. He was preceded in death by his parents and also three brothers, Allen, John and Hank Loomis. Col. Loomis was of the Episcopal faith. Surviving Col. Loomis are one daughter and son in law, Judy and Bradley Hays of Hiawassee, one brother and sister in law, David and Jo Loomis of Dallas, TX., one grand daughter and her husband, Stacey and Edward Harper Jr. of Newnan, GA., one great grandson, James Edward (Tripp) Harper III of Newnan, many other relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday Jan. 13, 2016 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Taylor officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Tripp Harper, Edward Harper, Bradley Hays, David Loomis, Scott Drummond and Dickson Cannon. Interment will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton with full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Boys Town 14100 Crawford St. Boys Town, NE. 68010 in memory of Col. Loomis. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10-11:00 am. Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of the arrangements.
