H. Lamar James: Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of H. Lamar James announce his passing on February 13, 2020. He was born on August 13, 1949 in Commerce, Georgia, the only child of Bud and Frances James. He was a graduate of the Jefferson High School Class of 1967, and earned a degree from Georgia Southern University in 1971. Through the years, he lived in several cities around Georgia and spent many years in Destin, Florida. He spent the past couple of years in a mountain home in Blairsville, Georgia, enjoying the view of Brasstown Bald.

Known to many as “Bubba,” he was a sports fanatic, an insatiable reader, an avid bowler and golfer, and a lifelong entrepreneur. He had a keen intellect and a sense of humor like no other. To know him was to laugh with him, probably until your stomach hurt.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert “Bud” James. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Maria James; mother, Frances James; daughter, Melody Hanlon (Greg); son, Lee Garrison (Marie); and grandchildren, Lindsey Garrison, Jared Garrison, and Eleanor Hanlon; along with cousins and many great friends.

The family will celebrate his life at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to The American Stroke Foundation.

Betty J Chastain, age 75 of Blue Ridge, passed away February 15, 2020, in Ducktown, TN. Mrs. Chastain was born February 17, 1944 in Turtletown, TN to the late Charles J Muncher and the late Floyd Patterson Muncher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Chastain, brothers, Tom Muncher, Jack Muncher, George Muncher, and Charles CJ Muncher, sisters, Lillie Faye Brown, Mary Alice Meredith, and Corene Mashburn.

Survivors include: son, James (Pam) Chastain, daughter, Tammy (Michael) Pierce, granddaughters, Kayla (Shannon) Bradburn, Brittany Pierce, and Haley Morgan Chastain, grandson, Nathan Chastain, and great-granddaughter, Addyson Bradburn, and great-grandson Izaiah Bradburn.

Memorial service: Saturday, February 29, 2020, from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Bethel Church Fellowship Hall.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory: loving wife of 31 years, Anna J. Borowski; father, Chester Borowski; son & daughter-in-law, Robert & Christina Borowski; daughter & son-in-law, Kimberly & Van Gurley; step-daughter, Andrea DePalma; step-son & daughter-in-law, Jeffery & Tabitha DePalma; brother & sister-in-law, Michael & Jean Borowski; and sister, Barbara Collins. Also, sharing in his legacy are grandchildren, Kyle Gurley, Kevin Gurley, Nathan Gurley, Jake Borowski, Joey Borowski, Stephanie Bellmore- DePalma, and Alison Depalma; and great grandson, Carson Zirbes.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, Georgia. Interment will follow at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hayesville, North Carolina.

Mrs. Lougene Lydia Lance, age 85 of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her home on February 20, 2020 following a brief illness. Lougene was born on January 10, 1935 in Towns County, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Lilly Cheek. She retired from Georgia Boot where she worked for over 50 years. Lougene was a long-time member of
Zebulon Baptist Church. She cherished her time spent with her family and having the joy of watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow over the years. Lougene’s favorite past time was attending concerts at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, most often with Mike and Peggy Callaway. With an open heart and an open door, she fed friends and family for over
six decades. Her beloved kitchen was visited by many throughout her lifetime.
She is preceded in death by many family members; daughter, Debbie Phillips, husband, Charles Lance, husband, Grover Thomas, sister, Bessie Mae Miller, sister, Wilma Brown, brother, J.T. Cheek, sister, Ruby Nelson, sister Lenora Wright, sister, Geneva Gantt, brother, Wayne Cheek, and several nieces.
Survivors include three daughters and son-in-laws and a son and daughter-in-law; Vickie and Earl Brackett, Rita and Terry Hughes, Kathy and Jeff Butt, Brian and Angie Thomas, seven grandchildren; Nikki Hughes, Ashley and John Davis, Nataley and Ethan Goins, Kayla and Travis Hemphill, Dustin Hughes, Lyndsey and Clay Smith, Brody and Kylie Thomas, eight great-grandchildren; Kamryn Mull, Gracie Hughes, Bristol Davis, Brylie Davis, Nixon Goins, Brecken Goins, Pearl Smith, Adelynn Thomas, and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Elaine Riggs: Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Elaine Riggs age 93 of Midnight Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side on Saturday February 7, 2020 following an extended illness. Mrs. Riggs was born on September 27, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA., the daughter of the late Harold Landis and the late Nelle Prager Landis. Before her retirement she was employed with the Chestnut Hill Hospital/Nursing School for over thirty eight years. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Riggs in 2007, a daughter in law, Mary Riggs in 2012 , two brothers, Zeke and Bobby and a sister, Jean, and two grandchildren, Brett Riggs and Edmund Kulikowski. Mrs. Riggs was a Deacon, Elder and secretary at the Presbyterian Church in Roxborough, PA. and was a member of the Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville.

Surviving Mrs. Riggs are two daughters and sons in law, Elaine and Ron Moss of  Blairsville, Melanie and Joe DelBorrello of Gilbertsville, PA., two sons and one daughter in law, Norman and Pamela Riggs of Tom River, NJ., Glen Riggs of Ocean View, DE., five grandchildren, Colleen Williams, Melanie Sorgini, Jamie Riggs, Timothy Riggs Shara Rhoads, six great grandchildren, Angel, Daniel, Morgan, Aaron, Owen, Paige, Lacie, Autumn and Cerridyn, three great-great grandchildren, Heaven, Rayaleigh and Jameson, several nieces, nephews, a host of her church families, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Wednesday February 12, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville with Rev. Travis Adams officiating. Special music will be presented by Ray Bennett. Interment will follow at a later date in the Westminster Cemetery in Bala Cywyd, PA.  Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Relay For Life in Dorothy’s memory.

Mrs. Meta Virginia Sellers Ashley, age 91 of Eagle Drive, Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday February 9, 2020 at the Life Care Center of Copper Basin following a brief illness. Virginia was born on April 20, 1928 in Columbus, GA., daughter of the late Lawrence H. Moore & late Tommie Meta Fitzpatrick. In her free time; she played a lot of board games, completed crossword puzzles, and read many books. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother; Lawrence Hill Moore, a sister; Evelyn Betts, and a nephew; Byron Smith. Virginia attended Antioch Baptist Church and was a member of Georgetown Baptist Church in Georgetown, GA.

Survivors include four sons, Richard Vann Sellers of Ft. Gaines, GA., Cecil Wayne & Lucy Sellers of Thomasville, GA., Benjamin Hill Sellers of Morgan, GA., Lawrence Evan Sellers of Enterprise, AL., a daughter & son-in-law; Evelyn DiAnne & Tommy Bennett of Blairsville, GA., two sisters & a brother-in-law; Jean Edwards of Jacksonville, FL., Margaret & Fred Bailey of Powder Springs, GA., seven grandchildren; Richard Vann Sellers Jr., Kristi Paige Stewart, Jeremy Sellers, Kimberly Kirk, Amanda Cannon, Joey Sellers, Skeeter Sellers, nine great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews also survive.

    Mr. Francis Earl Wiggers age 76 of Blairsville Passed away Sunday February 9, 2020 after a brief illness The son of Francis Earl Wiggers Sr and Sally Rawls of Indianola Mississippi.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki Wiggers; sons Ed Wiggers and daughter in law Ann Wiggers of Alexandria, Virginia; Brent Wiggers of Blairsville, Georgia; and daughter Melissa Clark of Atlanta, Georgia. Three grandchildren,Andrew and Clare Wiggers and Cadence Wiggers.
Earl was a graduate of the US Naval Academy class of 1966 and served in the navy 8 years. Emory School of Law. He practiced law for 41 years in Atlanta and Young Harris Ga. He was KMart’s litigating attorney for 20 years. He then came up to the mountains.  Law was his passion. Helping families and children was his driving force. He considered these children his children.
He was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church. He was a member of the choir and men’s group at Shady Grove. Donations may be sent to Shady Grove Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 15, 2020 at 1:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Winfred Pitts officiating. Special music will be presented by Pat McGaha and the Shady Grove Church Choir. John Nix will also sing. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Edward Wiggers, Brent Wiggers, Marty Welch, Jeff Houston, William Mercer and Scott Ledford. David Andrew Taylor: Obituary

Mr. David Andrew Taylor age 66 of Timber Ridge Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday February 9, 2020 following a brief illness. Mr. Taylor was born on March 22, 1953 in Union County, the son of the late Paul Taylor and the late Willa Mae Meers Taylor. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. David was a jack of all trades and could do just about anything. He was a great mechanic, a home builder and many other things. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and also two sisters and one brother in law, Mae Bell Lee, Lois and Gene Porter and a brother, Monroe Taylor. David was a Deacon and member of Bunker Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving David are his loving wife and best friend of forty eight years, Cathy Wright Taylor of Blairsville, two sons and one daughter in law, Travis Taylor, Matthew and Faye Taylor, one daughter and son in law, Tammy and Brandon Hughes, six grandchildren, Terrance and Tiffany Taylor, Austin and Haley Nation, Caleb Holloway, Lexy, Abby and Aspen Young, three great grandchildren, Karra Briley, Isabella and Noah Holloway, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Steve Edwin Dockery age 56 of Clarence Nichols Rd. Young Harris passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home on Sunday February 9, 2020 following an extended illness. Mr. Dockery was born on August 6, 1963 in Hiawassee, GA., the son of Christeen Lancaster Dockery and the late Buell Dockery. He was a lifelong resident of Union and Towns Counties. He was a loving husband, father and brother. Steve was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday February 12, 2020 at 2:00pm from the West Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Guy Wayne Shook and Rev. Bill Dyer officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Steve Gilbert, Joe Thomas, Coy Dockery, Jamie Dockery, Joffrey Richards, and Keith Norton. Doris McGowan: Obituary

Doris McGowan passed away on February 12, 2020, at her home in Blue Ridge, GA, surrounded by her family. Born April 25th, 1927 in Bronx, NY to Emil and Mary (Miller) Braun. She graduated from Otisville High School and married Joseph A. McGowan April 4th, 1948. They moved to Florida in an old jalopy that, probably, would not be deemed roadworthy by today’s standards. They had four children: Patricia (Halpin); Donna, Michael, and Merrily. Doris (mom to us) was strong-willed, opinionated and independent. She took classes at the University of Florida and eventually worked as our dad’s legal secretary. She was active in the Republican Party while living in Miami, Fl and retired in Blue Ridge, GA in 1981. While in Blue Ridge, she was active in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and took classes in clogging, basket weaving, chair caning, beading, playing the dulcimer, just to name a few. When our dad developed early Alzheimer’s, she became his primary caregiver and, at the same time, she took on her two invalid aunts. She cared for all three for several years until they passed. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Eleanor (Wilbur), Richard and Rita (Hosking) and so many of her friends. She will be missed by many.

Visitors will be received from 5-7 PM at Cochran’s Funeral Home with a rosary held by Fr. John Conway. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM February 18th, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Chastain Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Tankersley was born March 3, 1947, in Mobile, GA to the late Everett Tankersley and the late Bessie O’Neal Tankersley. He was preceded in death by his son, Mitchell Tankersley and sister, Cathy Payne.

Ira Thomas “I.T” Harkins: Obituary

The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Ira Thomas “I.T” Harkins, age 100 of Suches, Georgia who passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020.

Born March 15, 1919 in the “Flat Lands” of Suches, Georgia “I.T.” was the first of six children of James H. Harkins and Lola N. Abercrombie Harkins. Ira had four younger brothers, Eldo, twins Ralph and Harley, and Clyde. His baby sister, Stella Mae was his fifth sibling. Ira was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eldo Harkins, Ralph and Harley Harkins; and his wife, Pauline N. Jarrett Harkins. Ira is survived by his brother, Clyde Harkins of Suches, Georgia and Stella Mae Hayes of NC.

He is also survived by his two sons and their families: Son, Thomas H. and Karen W. Harkins (GA); Granddaughter, Jodi D. Johansen; Great Grandchildren: Benjamin A. Johansen, Gavin A. Johansen, and Virginia R. Johansen; Son, Robert L. and Lyn T. Harkins (SC); Grandson, Eric P. and Toni A. Harkins; Great Grandchildren: Logan G. Harkins, and Brooklyn A. Harkins.

He was blessed with an extended family of nephews and nieces, too numerous to list but all of whom he appreciated and loved.

He met his future wife, Blairsville native Pauline Neel Jarrett (deceased 2013), at Young Harris College. They married in 1945 and he continued to be a devoted husband for 68 years.

A career military man, he served in the US Army for 31 years, 4 months, and 17 days, retiring in Fort Hood, Texas as Sergeant Major on April 1, 1973. Drafted November 12, 1941 just before America’s entry into WWII from Baxter, GA for one year of service. He ended up making it his career. His tour of duties included Panama Canal Zone, Ft Lewis Washington, Atlanta General Depot, Philippines, Ft. Benning, GA, Germany, Ft. Hood, Texas, Korea, Vietnam and other US posts.

He became a devout Christian in his early married life. From that moment on, throughout his adult life he lived his faith. Wherever he was stationed or settled he was active and supportive in a local church. He served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and wherever the Church or community needed his services. His most recent church family whom he loved, was Zion Baptist Church in Suches.

His Army travels and retirement, never diminished or changed his longing to come back to the place of his birth and the experiences of his childhood…Union County and Suches, Georgia. Moving to Suches in 1980, Ira became involved in local activities. He was a board member of the Suches/Morganton Community Clinic, Suches Coordinator for Keep Georgia Beautiful, Blairsville Lions Club, North Georgia Honor Guard, Commander of the Blairsville VFW, and Life Time Member of Union County Historical Society. He was very active in helping to preserve the old Union County Court house and creating the book Heritage of Union County, Georgia, 1832-1994.

He was a passionate local historian, amateur archeologist, gardener, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved God, his immediate and extended family, Union County, and anyone he met. He never met a stranger.

He was of the generation of Faith, Flag, and Family.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Corinth Baptist Church in Suches with Military Honors presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Friday evening at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m.

Mrs. Eva Mae Adams, age 65, of Murphy, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. She was born on January 12th, 1955, in Clay County, NC, to the late Jake & Clara Belle Walker Trout. She worked at Moog for thirty-plus years and was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. Eva loved everyone she came in contact with and always placed other people’s needs ahead of her own. She goes on to be with her parents, as well as her two brothers, Junior Trout and Bobby Ray Trout and sister Wanda Kay Trout McTaggart. She will be remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her husband, Vernon Adams; son Kevin Adams; sister, Faye (Donald) Teems; and brothers, JC (Joyce) Trout, and Arnold (Nancy) Trout. Also sharing in her legacy are several nieces and nephews, as well as, many wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy, with Rev. Clark Moss officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until the service hour at the funeral home. Mr. Carey Edward Waldrip Sr., age 81 of Track Rock Gap Road, Blairsville, formerly of Dechard, TN., passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 4, 2020 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Waldrip was born on August 28, 1938 in Atlanta, GA., the son of the late Danie T. Waldrip & late Martha Emma Glore. Carey was a big history buff; especially when it came to genealogy. He also did a lot of hiking in his free time. Carey was a member of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris.

Survivors include his loving wife and best-friend of 60 years; Kay Waldrip of Blairsville, daughter & son-in-law; Laura & Stan Campbell of Blairsville, son & daughter-in-law; Carey Jr. & Chantal Waldrip of Williamsburg, VA., two brothers & a sister-in-law; Daniel Waldrip of Atlanta, GA., Wayne & Judy Waldrip of Smyrna, GA., and two grandchildren; Todd & Tyler Campbell. Several nieces & nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held on Monday February 17, 2020 at 3:00pm from the Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. David Tinsley & Rev. Stephen Soulen officiating. Laura Ruth Grantham Wilson, age 99, passed away on February 7, 2020. She was born March 14, 1920. She will be laid to rest in Pantertown Cemetery with her late beloved son, Douglas Wilson; and late husband Edd Wilson, from whom she was widowed in 1949. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Bonnie Grantham.

Mrs. Wilson was a loving mother to her daughter, Rebecca Wilson Hale, and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Susan Wilson Ficken and family, Aaron and Margaret; Charley Wilson and family, Kate, Dutch and Lorelei; Patrick German and family, Lanna, Julia, Casey, Reilly, and Alyssa; Laura Dianne German Hibbs and family, Wilson and Grace; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Wilson.

Laura loved and treasured long friendships with TC Dillard, Bee and Linda Hicks; and Vicki Dillard, who faithfully brought her so much joy with calls or letters every day for over 10 years.

Mrs. Wilson was the oldest living member of Williamstown UMC, and the last surviving member of Copperhill High School class of 1938. She enjoyed working over 30 years as a Dental Assistant and especially the many friendships she made through her work.

Graveside services will be officiated by life long friend Pastor Larry Russell, February 9, 2020, 4 p.m. from the Pantertown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made where her heart was to Williamstown United Methodist Church, 37 Williamstown Road, Mineral Bluff, GA 30559.
