Herbert C. Dyer: Obituary
Obituaries August 8, 2015
Herbert C. Dyer, age 75, lifelong resident of Blairsville, passed away following an extended illness on Saturday, August 8, 2015 in the Union County Nursing Home. Herbert was born on June 30, 1940, son of the late Carter Dyer and Pearl Duckworth Dyer.
During his life, he enjoyed working for the state, in his yard, and watching his children and grandchildren play ball. He lived by a couple of his favorite life-mottoes: “plan your work and work your plan,” and “never put off tomorrow what you can do today.”
He was a member and deacon at Old Liberty Baptist Church, and he was also a member of the Masons and Shriners; nothing pleased him more than helping to collect money for the Children’s Hospital. Also, in his earlier years, he was an active member of the Blairsville Jaycees, often seen greeting visitors at the Sorghum Festival.
Herbert served as Union County Treasurer for four years. After his term he went to work for the State Revenue Department as a Property Tax Appraiser. He was employed for approximately 26 years before retiring in 2005. As a member of the work-force since graduating high school, he did not like the idea of not using his skills as an employee; therefore, he took a part-time job with the Union County Tax Appraisal office. He worked there until his declining health did not permit him to continue.
Herbert is preceded in death by his parents, sisters (Tannie Dyer Collins and Maudie Dyer Shuler), and brothers (Elbert, Clyde and James Dyer). Surviving family members include: his wife of 55 years, Anita Collins Dyer; son, Chris Dyer and wife Dale Dyer of Blairsville; daughter, Angie Thomas and husband Brian Thomas of Flowery Branch; daughter, Jennifer Ludlum and husband John Ludlum of Blairsville; sister, Ruby Nelle Cook and husband Eugene Cook of Blairsville; grandchildren, Lauren Dyer, Tori Dyer, Lyndsey Smith and husband Clay Smith, Brody Thomas, Skyler Ludlum, and Zady Ludlum; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will greet friends on Monday, August 10th from 5 to 9 p.m., and the funeral services will be conducted by Reverends Harley Hunter and Waymon Lovell on Tuesday, August 11th at 2:00 p.m. at Old Liberty Baptist Church, followed by the burial in the church cemetery. The Eulogy will be given by Herbert and Anita’s son Chris Dyer, and the singing will be performed by Darrek Cornelison. The Pallbearers will be nephews Troy Collins, Jerry Collins, Danny Dyer, Barney Cook, Gerald Cook, Darrell Cook, and special escort was grandson Brody Thomas.
If you wish to commemorate Herbert’s life, the family asks memorials be made to Old Liberty Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
