Mary Carolyn Jones: Obituary

Mary Carolyn Jones, age 78 of Copperhill, passed away on December 30, 2019, at Hospice Of Chattanooga Care Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mrs. Jones was born on February 9, 1941, in Copperhill, Tn to late Cecil A Collis and Ruby Lorene Brooks. Mary loved her job working at Walmart in Murphy, NC. She adored her nephews Brandon, Jordan, Cody, and Tyler and thought of them as her own. One of the many things she cherished in her lifetime was Spanky. Mrs. Mary Jones was truly an extraordinary woman and was admired by everyone who knew her. Heaven gained a beautiful angel who will be missed each and every day. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold G. Jones, and her sister Judy Collis.

Survivors include her sister, Kathleen Walden, sister, Brenda Brackett, brother, Jim Collis(Karen), sister, Joy C. Collis, and sister Jane Morrow (Dwight).

Funeral services will not be announced due to family requests.

John Harold Garrett: Obituary

   Mr. John Harold Garrett age 80 of Old Gum Log Rd. Blairsville passed away on Sunday December 1, 2019 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Garrett was born on Jan. 27, 1939 in Suches, GA., the son of the late Henry Garrett and the late Mary Harkins Garrett. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. John was a veteran of the US Army with over twenty three years of service. He loved fishing, hunting and loafering with his cousin Earl. He was preceded in death by his parents and also three sisters, Lizzie Grizzle, Essie Davis and Hattie Garrett, three brothers, Willard, Leaford and William Garrett. John was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Garrett are his loving wife and best friend of fifty two years, Dorothy Sue Ross Garrett of Blairsville, two daughters and one son in law, Shirley and Scott Durrett of Tulsa, OK., Hillary Garrett of Bixby, OK., three sisters and brothers in law, Shelby and J.W. Jenkins of Bunnell, FL., Helen and Ronnie Abercrombie of Suches, Edith and Thomas Bradford of Calhoun, one grandson, Ryan Campbell, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. George Cline officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be the US Army Honor Guard. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church in John’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Thursday, from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m.

Cheryl Lee Helton: Obituary

Cheryl Lee Helton, age 48, of Gainesville, GA, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA. She was born in Ducktown, TN, on Tuesday, October 26, 1971, to the late Steven & Sandra Wilcox Helton. Cheryl enjoyed her work as a Patient Care Tech for Northeast Georgia Medical Center. She not only offered assistance for her patients, but she also provided a kind, friendly, and caring personality. Cheryl will be remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her children; Alexius Helton, Austin Helton and, Heyli Colbert, grandchildren; Jorrden Crowder, Jayse Crowder, and Annleigh Crowder. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2019, at 3:00 pm from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Murphy, NC. Rev. Allen Harris will be officiating.

           Mr. Gene Herman (Coach) Schultz, age 78, of Blairsville, passed away at his home, Saturday, November 23, 2019, following an extended illness. He was born February 4, 1941 in Wayside, WI to the late Harold and Bernice Janry Schultz. Mr. Schultz moved here 16 years ago from Kewaunee, WI. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was retired from Schreiber Foods. Mr. Schultz was of the Lutheran Faith. He was an avid Packers fan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Maxine Schultz of Blairsville, GA, four children, Tina Pickard of DePere, WI, Tammy (Philip) Newberry of Blue Ridge, GA, Troy Schultz of Epworth, GA, and Todd (Dawn) Schultz of Green Bay, WI, sisters, Bonnie (Gary) Paultz of Reedsville, WI, and Karen Schimek of Green Bay, WI, brothers, Scott (Linda) Schultz and Giles (Debbie) Schultz both of Reedsville, WI, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted but if you wish make memorial donations in Mr. Schultz memory to Life Care Medical Transport, 1058C Kiutuestia Creek RD, Blairsville, GA.

Rev. James W. Jenkins: Obituary

Rev. James W. Jenkins, age 77, of Copperhill, passed away Monday, November 18, 2019, at Fannin Regional Hospital. Mr. Jenkins was born May 3, 1942, in Culberson, NC, to the late Charles Jenkins and the late Gazzie Truett Jenkins. He was a member of Ducktown Masonic Lodge, No. 241 F&AM, and served area churches as pastor for over 30 years including Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Shady Grove Baptist Church. James also worked as a security guard for the Tennessee Chemical Company for 35 years, and enjoyed giving his time and talent at the Polk County Senior Center. Mr. Jenkins was preceded in death by his father, Charles Jenkins, mother, Gazzie Truett Jenkins, first wife, Joy Bruce Jenkins, sisters, Willie Mae Jenkins, Faye Rogers, Jean Clonts, Dorothy Alsobrook, and Geneaive Jenkins, brothers, Thomas Jenkins, Junior Jenkins, and George Jenkins.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Jenkins, sister, Louizene Wilson, brother, Lucky (Pat) Jenkins, son, Dwayne Jenkins, daughter, JoAnn (Alan) Deal, step-daughters, Shauna (Lee) Adams, Pam (Eric) Satterfield, and Becky (Eddie) O’Neal, grandchildren, Jessica Dean, Jason (Leslie) Dean, Joshua (Amber) Dean, Michael (Misty) Deal, Christopher Deal, Scott Deal, Alan Deal, Jr., step-grandchildren, Noah (Alexis) O’Neal, Isaac O’Neal, Michah O’Neal, Jessica Thomason, Jennifer (David) Henry, Wesley Adams, Kyle Adams, and many great-grandchildren.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville is announcing as a courtesy for Coggins Funeral Home of Thomaston, Georgia, services for Rev. Donald “Don” Kirkland age 84 of Thomaston Ga, formerly of Blairsville, who died Monday November 4, 2019 at his residence.

Rev. Kirkland was born on July 14, 1935 in Slocomb Al, to the late Roy Kirkland and the late Alline Golden Kirkland. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Rev. Kirkland loved aviation and flew thirty years in Africa for the International Mission Board. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he served as Associate Pastor for many years. Rev. Kirkland also served as Associate Pastor at Zion Baptist Church in Suches Ga.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Diane Kirkland of Thomaston Ga, daughters Mrs. Cindy Kirkland Cone of Pine Mountain Ga, Mrs. Sharon Kirkland (David) Timms of Pine Mountain Ga, step daughter Mrs. Teresa Hall Ponder of Lagrange Ga, step son Mr. Raymond (Michelle) Ponder of Suches Ga. 8 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren.

Mr. Grimsley was born on December 19, 1936 in Miami, FL., the son of the late Joseph Granger Grimsley Sr. and the late Dorcas (Doris) Levone Stone. Joey was an avid saltwater fisher as well as being a Church Elder in the Blairsville Seventh Day Adventist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving & caring wife of 48 years, Robin Grimsley of Hiawassee, four sons and three daughters-in-law, Stephen & Nicki Grimsley of Jenison, MI., Joseph & Karen Grimsley of Bushnell, FL., John & Carol Grimsley of Columbia, SC., Steven Grimsley of Orlando, FL., one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah & Roger Hawkins of Maitland, FL., two sisters, Mary Grimsley of Deltona, FL., and Bonnie Reynolds of Miami, FL. Christian, Lauren, Megan, eleven grandchildren & sixteen great-grandchildren also survive.

Vernon Ray Moore, age 69, of Murphy, passed away October 28, 2019, at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital. Mr. Moore was born November 2, 1949, in Murphy, NC, to the late Arvil Lee Moore and Helen Irene Peek Moore. He served as a deacon at the Household of Faith Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Vietnam. Vernon enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and cutting grass.

Survivors include a step-son, James Stuart, sons, Robert Moore, and Jonathan Moore, sister, Shirley Wilbanks, and brother, James Greene, two grandchildren, Mackenzie Moore, and Windy, three great-grandchildren, Leeya, Elijah, and Isaiah.

Mr. Edwin Allan Laney age 59 of Mountain View Drive Jasper formerly of Ellijay passed away peacefully on Sunday October 20, 2019 in the Piedmont Mountainside Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Laney was born on August 15, 1960 in Murphy, NC., the son of the late Pat Laney and the late Mildred Dockery Laney. He was a loving father and grandfather. Mr. Laney was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Laney are one son and daughter in law, Dustin and Tammy McElwaney of Blue Ridge, two grandchildren, Dakota Laney and Connor McElwaney, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Karl Lee Edsall: Obituary

Mr. Karl Lee Edsall (Age 60) of Blairsville, passed away peacefully

on Tuesday October 15, 2019 following an extended illness.

Karl was born in Muskegon, MI to the late Joseph and Charlotte Edsall.

Karl, a longtime resident of both Florida and Michigan had a deep passion for

cars and motorcycles and a great love and respect for his country.

Karl proudly served as a SP4 in the United States Army for four years.

He was an experienced, military trained welder as well as an artist, and inventor.

Karl was of the Christian Faith and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

 

Karl is survived by his two children Candice Cothren (Kyle Lance) of Murphy, NC. and Cody Edsall of Flowery Branch, GA; Grandsons Darrell Cothren and Able Lance, Sister Kari Edsall of Michigan, Brothers Kirk Edsall of Tennessee and Dan Edsall (Brenda Edsall) of Blairsville, GA as well as niece Katie Hamilton (Josh Hamilton, daughter Kaylee Hamilton) and nephew Steven Edsall.

 

A funeral service honoring Karl will be held on Sunday October 20, 2019 at 2:00pm in the Mountain View Chapel Blairsville, GA with Rev. George Cline officiating.

Military Honors will be conducted by the North GA Honor Guard.

Family will receive friends on Sunday from 12 – 2:00 pm.

Interment will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA on Tuesday October 22, 2019.

Robert Orin Wildrick: Obituary

Mr. Robert Orin Wildrick age 83 of Vista Ridge Blairsville passed away on Wednesday October 9, 2019 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Wildrick was born on April 16, 1936 in East Stroudsburg, PA., the son of the late Walter Wildrick and the late Lura DePuy Wildrick. Robert was a veteran of the US Air Force. He retired from Bell South and ATT&T after many years of service. Robert was good hearted and was always wanting to help someone in need. He was a member of the Myo Sitis Foundation. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Robert attended the Emanuel Presbyterian Church in Franklin.

Surviving Robert are his loving wife and best friend of thirty five years, Anne Meredith Wildrick of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Bobby and Anneke Wildrick of Seattle, WA., one daughter, Janice Wildrick, one sister, Jean Heinrick of Reading, PA., three grandchildren, a host of his church family, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday October 16, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Georgia National Cemetery with Rev. Tim McQuitty officiating. The US Air Force will present full Military Honors. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Emanuel Presbyterian Church in Franklin and will be announced. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family request that donations may be made to the Emanuel Presbyterian Church in Franklin or to the Myo Sitis Foundation in Robert’s memory.

Mary Blair Arnold: Obituary

Mary was born June 21, 1931 in Lawrenceville, Georgia.  She was 88 years young and was very active until a couple months ago.  She left with the angels while surrounded by her son and others that loved her.  Mary was proceeded in death by her parents Frank & Magnolia Blair, her sister Virginia Chambers and her husband, the love of her life Herbert Arnold.

 

Mary is survived by her son Michael David Arnold whom she resided with in Blairsville Georgia.  Mary is also survived by nephews, nieces, a host of family, friends, neighbors & church families all of whom she loved dearly.

 

Mary had a passion for helping other since she was a little girl.  Mary was a “Daddy’s Girl” learning at an early age how too politic, teach people how to vote and make friends.

 

Mary’s first job was doing time studies at Empire Corporation in Atlanta.  Shortly after she went to work at Gwinnett County Extension Service.  This is when she found her gift of helping others.  She would go into homes teaching love income families about nutrition, how to cook, clean, read, grow a garden and survive during difficult times.  Mary didn’t stop there; she then went to work as Director of Gwinnett County Senior Citizens & Hi-Hope Training Center as Director of Transportation of Special Needs Students.

 

Upon retirement she and Herbert moved to Blairsville and built a log cabin on the lake.  But Mary didn’t know how to retire.  Mary was a volunteer of Special Needs programs, Clothing missions, Union County Lions Club, American legion Women’s Auxiliary, TVA Lake Association for Lake Nottely Improvements and Union County Relay for Life, only to name a few.  She would provide respite care and work one to one with Special Needs.  Mary always received the highest honors as she excelled in all the organizations, she was a part of.

 

Mary loved her church families.  She and Herbert helped to start Central Baptist Church in 1958 along with 36 others and they continue to grow and prosper today in Lawrenceville.  Mary still supports Eastside Baptist Church in Lawrenceville where she has many friends attend.  Mary is a member of House of Prayer in Blairsville where she stated and taught a Special Needs Sunday School Class for over 10 years.  Mary, Herbert & Mike would host a lot of outings at their home and treat everyone on a ride in their pontoon boat down the lake.  Mary never really quit teaching as every Sunday, she would still have one of “her children” sit with her during the services.

 

Mary will be missed by all that knew her.  She was always sending cards to everyone.  She would get so excited when the mail came as she knew one of her “Special Children” would send her cards and letters.  Friends that moved away still exchanged letters with Mary.  At Christmas, she would cover the walls of her house with the many cards, letters & pictures she would get.  Mary’s wish is that it doesn’t stop with her.  She desired that we love each other, help each other and be a blessing to those around us.  Make a friend and be a friend.

 

Presiding at the Blairsville service will be Rev. Jerry Helton along with Bill Honaker & Lisa Little speaking.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers Mark Arnold, Wayne Tullis, Donice Tullis, & Ricky Abercrombie.  Honorary Escorts will be Union County Lions Club & American Legion Honor Guard.  Presiding at the Lawrenceville graveside service will be Rev. Bill Dobbs.

 

Viewing will be Tuesday October 8th from 2:00pm till 8:00pm at Mountain View Funeral Home 119 Murphy Highway Blairsville, GA.  Services will be from the chapel on Wednesday October 9th at 11:00am.  After conclusion we will convene at 3:00pm for a graveside service at East Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens 87 Scenic Highway Lawrenceville, GA where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Herbert.

Juanita Boyd Bennett: Obituary

Mrs. Juanita Boyd Bennett, age 90, passed away Friday, October 4, 2019, at her home. She was born April 16, 1929, to the late Hubert W. Boyd and Montene Thompson Boyd. Juanita was a member of Morganton Baptist Church and loved her Savior, Jesus Christ. She worked on consolidating church records, teaching classes, and serving on the cemetery committee. Mrs. Bennett graduated from Commercial High School and attended Georgia State University. She worked for Orr Refrigeration for three years and then went on to work for the U.S. District Court, Bankruptcy Division, in Atlanta, for seven years. While her husband was in the Army, Juanita managed the family businesses. Later, she was the Associate Broker and Office Manager at Mountain Town Realty. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Elizabeth Haizlip.

Survivors include her husband, of 71 years, Weymon L. (Sam) Bennett, Sr., son, Weymon L. “Lee” (Debra) Bennett Jr., grandson, Weymon L. (Candice) Bennett, III, granddaughters, Belinda and Cassie Bennett.

Funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, October 6, 2019, at 3:00 PM, from the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Eric Kincade officiating. Interment will follow in the Morganton Baptist Church Cemetery. Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy announces funeral services for Mrs. Linda Sue Jones, age 67, of Murphy, who passed away on Monday, September 30th, 2019 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Jones was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina, and was a daughter of the late Willard Luther Roberson, Sr. and the late Eula Mashburn Roberson. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of River Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, and aunt. She openly loved others, and would do anything for anybody. She was so happy when she was listening to gospel music on WKRK and worshiping her Savior! Besides her parents, she had been preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Ray Roberson.

Family members left behind to treasure her memory are her loving husband, Harvey Jones; son, David Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Bruce Jones; a brother, Willard Luther Roberson Jr. and his wife, Barbara; brother Marvin Roberson and his wife Teresa; and sister, Martha Nell Byers; several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Wednesday, October 2nd, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday, October 3rd, 2019, to be held at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Murphy, with Rev. Harold Stiles officiating. Special music will be presented by Calvin Mashburn. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Donnie Roberson, Ronnie Roberson, Travis Roberson, Stacy Roberson, Casey Roberson, and Lee Brown. Selected to serve as honorary escort to the family are Calvin Mashburn and Bruce Jones. Burial will be in Mashburn Family Cemetery on Nottley River Road in Culberson, North Carolina.
