Mr. Philip Louis Gamache age 96 of Blairsville, a very tired Marine of WWII who fought with his division at Iowa Jima until the end, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday September 21, 2019 following an extended illness.

Surviving Mr. Gamache are his loving wife, children, a sibling, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday September 24, 2019 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel with the North GA Honor Guard conducting Military Honors. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the US Marines Association in Philip’s memory.

Buddy Lee Mawyer, age 80 of Blairsville, GA. passed away on Sunday September 15, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Mawyer was born in the front seat of a Model A Ford on route 29 near Charlottesville, VA on January 13^th, 1939, the son of the late Lawrence Mawyer and the late Ruby Taylor.

Mr. Mawyer enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and traveling. He had a long career in association management. He was the Executive Vice President of the Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Contractor’s Association of Georgia for 23 years. Prior to Georgia – SMACNA, he served in many capacities for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National (SMACNA) located in Northern Virginia for 17 years. He was a Christian and veteran of the U.S. Navy and traveled extensively throughout the world.

Surviving Mr. Mawyer are his loving wife and best friend of 57 years, Patricia Mawyer of Blairsville, GA., a son & daughter-in-law, Robert & Debra Mawyer of Blairsville, GA., and a sister, Peggy Trenary of Fredericksburg, VA.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday September 18^th at 11:00am at the Norvelle Family Cemetery located at 5170 Monacan Trail Rd. Covesville, VA 22931, located in Albemarle County, VA.. Capt. Thomas E. B. McVay age 89 of Mountain View Drive Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday September 10, 2019 following an extended illness. Mr. McVay was born on June 6, 1930 in Yell County Arkansas, the son of the late Henry Lee McVay Sr. and the late Modine Bezzo McVay. One of 5 siblings, he grew up in Dyess, Arkansas with their childhood and life long friend, Johnny Cash.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force of the Korean War. After military discharge at MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida, Thomas worked for St Philips Towing – Maritime Tug Boat company in Tampa, Florida where he was tug boat captain for 30 years; licenced for harbor and Western rivers.

Thomas was a member of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church, Master Mates and Pilots, Maritime Union, The Emmaus Community, and American Legion. He loved hunting and working with wood crafts.

Thomas was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Madison Dean McVay.

Surviving Mr. McVay are his loving wife and best friend of forty one years, Rev. Victory McVay of Blairsville, five sons and 3 daughters-in-law, William (Janice); Christopher of Blairsville,  Lee (Angela) of Dawsonville, Timothy (Samantha) and  Perry, all of Blairsville, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Henry McVay Jr. of Rockford, IL., Pete and Myrtle McVay of Marrion, AR., one sister, Mary Whyte of Memphis, TN., five grandchildren, Mikala of Salina, Kansas, Mitchell and Megan of Dawsonville, GA, Illeana and Zoe of Blairsville, GA., two great grandchildren, Arty and L.J. of Salina, Kansas, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday Septptember 14, 2019 at 4:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Jim Barker, Rev, Earl Bishop and Rev. Chris Rumsfeldt officiating. Special music will be presented by Pastor Chris Rumfeldt and Thomas’ sons. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, sons William Christopher, Lee, and Timothy, grandson, Mitchell and long time friend, Jimmy Wheeler. Interment will follow in the Coosa United Methodist Church Cemetery with the North GA Honor Guard conducting Military Honors. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 3-4:00 pm.

Mr. Anceberry Burnette age 94 of Murphy Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home on Wednesday September 11, 2019 following an extended illness. Mr. Burnette was born on October 24, 1924 in Dahlonega, GA., the son of the late John Calvin Burnette and the late Sarah Alice Seabolt Burnette. He was a lifelong resident of Union County. He was a veteran and POW of the US Army of WWII. He was the last living POW from Union County. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, great and great-great grandfather. Anceberry was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Sullivan, two brothers, Hurvey and Harley Burnette, seven sisters, Naomi Reece, Lillie Reece, Mattie Bell Cantrell, Avie Reece, Bonnie Burnette, Carrie Fields and Della Dyer. Mr. Burnette was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Burnette are three sons and two daughters in law, Johnny Burnette, Gary and Pearlene Burnette, Ronnie and Lucy Burnette, one daughter, Katherine Lloyd all of Blairsville, one sister, Lela Stephens of Blairsville, twenty grandchildren, many great and great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday Sept. 14, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel. Interment will follow in the Owltown Church of God Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the North GA Honor Guard. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9:00 pm.

Mrs. Vernice Jane Shelton age 85 of Free Branch Rd. Hiawassee passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday September 1, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Shelton was born on Sept. 25, 1933 in Hiawassee, GA., the daughter of the late John (Duck) Wilborn Brown and the late Vernie Chastain Brown. Vernice was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County. She was a loving and caring mother and sister. grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Shelton on May 14, 2019 and also three brothers, David, Clarence and Frazier Brown. Mrs. Shelton was a member of Many Forks Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Shelton are two daughters and one son in law, Rachel Shelton and fiancé, Rick Harrison of Hayesville, Patricia and Kenny Thompson of Williamston, SC., three sisters, Shirley Ballew of Nashville, TN., Allene Ware of Herron, IL., Eloise Stewart of Massillon, OH., several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday September 4, 2019 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Billy Stiles officiating. Special music will be presented by Steve and Natalie Bryson. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Billy Free, Rick Harrison, Ernest Chastain, Zack Davenport, Steve Byers and Slade Davenport . Interment will follow in the Many Forks Baptist Church Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband Charles. Mrs. Margaret Louise Hufnagel age 94 of Charlie Corn Drive Young Harris passed away peacefully on Monday August 26, 2019 at her home under the care of Hospice with her loving daughter and cat, Lizzie, by her side. Mrs. Hufnagel was born on Nov. 5, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA., the daughter of the late Clarence Pennell and the late Elizabeth Bischoff Pennell. Margaret was an avid artist and loved doing paper toll. She loved the beach and gardening. She was a long-time secretary for Woodall’s Mobile Home Park in Lakeland, FL. She was a caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs. Hufnagel was a member of Sharp Memorial Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Hufnagel are three daughters, Carol Desensi of Surprise, AZ., Sandra Hufnagel and her fiance’, David Meyer of Young Harris, Lori Hunter of Ormond Beach, FL., one son, Lawrence Hufnagel of Lakeland, FL., three grandchildren, Pam Konapasek of Pittsburgh, PA., Dawn Webb of Phoenix, AZ., Tawnya Sweeney of Pittsburgh, PA., ten great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 31, 2019 at 11:00 am from the Sharp Memorial Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Soulen officiating. Special music will be presented by Pam Leslie. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Union County Humane Society Mountain Shelter in Margret’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the church following the services.
