Two arrested in prostitution sting

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators received information that illegal prostitution activity had been occurring in the area. Once the investigators received the information and confirmed that it was occurring, Towns County Sheriff’s Office launched an undercover investigation and sting operation.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, Towns County investigators and deputies conducted the sting operation. Two female suspects were arrested without incident at a location within Towns County. The investigators arrested:

      - Samantha Dye, 24, of Hiawassee, Georgia      
        - Charged with One Count of Prostitution

      - Cassey Cooper, 20, of Blairsville, Georgia
      - Charged with One Count of Prostitution

The two suspects were arrested when they arrived to meet an informant along with undercover officers. The investigation is active and on going and additional arrests and charges may be forthcoming.

The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Man sought for assault on law enforcement faces drug charges

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Law enforcement officers from the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and Hiawassee Police Departmet arrested a suspect at a residence on Sampson Road in Young Harris on Sunday, Nov. 25, on outstanding warrants stemming from Towns, Union, and Gordon Counties.

Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators seized metamphetamine with a street-value of $5,000, illicit Schedule II and Schedule IV drugs, additional drug-related objects, and cash.

The suspect was identified as Christopher Steven Ray, 34, of Murphy, North Carolina. Ray was taken into custody, and charged with the following offenses:

One Count Trafficking in Methamphetamine
One Count Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute
One Count Possession of Methamphetamine
One Count Possession of Schedule II drugs
One Count Possession of Shedule IV drugs
One Count Possession of Drug-Related Objects
One Count Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers

In addition to the listed chardres, investigators served warrants on Ray which involved a previous encounter with the subject on Sept. 6, 2018. The warrants were related to the following crimes:

Possession of Methamphetamine
Three Counts Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers
Two Counts Possession of Schedule IV drugs

Gordon County Sheriff’s Office held outstanding warrants on Ray for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer along with several traffic offense warrants.

Union County Sheriff’s Office had previously issued a warrant for Ray for Violation of Probation.

The Towns County Sheriff’s Office warrants and charges will be forwarded to the Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Ray is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Jeffrey Dean Cowen still at-large

Jeffrey Dean Cowan, age 56, is still at-large and thought to have fled to Towns or White County. Lt. Daren Osborn, of the Union County Sheriff’s Department, said Cowan was released on bond to Buck Dills, his bail bondsman, on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at about 2:30 p.m. Cowan told Dills that he needed to meet with his wife at the Dollar General Store at Booger Hollow to get the money to pay his bond fee. Dills drove Cowan to the Dollar General Store where Cowan left Dills waiting in his car and went into the store. Cowan stole a kitchen knife in the store and used it to threaten the clerk into giving him her car keys. Cowan then went out to the clerk’s car and started it, then left that car and went over to Dills car where he proceeded to stab Dills with the kitchen knife. Cowan then fled the scene in the clerk’s car, an orange 2007 Honda Fit, Georgia tag PLU 4697, and drove south on GA Hwy 129. Cowan had been incarcerated since April 10, 2017 on a charge of theft by taking, so he was not thought to be high on any drugs or alcohol at the time of this incident, said Osborn.

Cowan is now wanted by the Union County Sheriff’s Department on two counts of Aggravated Assault, and one count each of False Imprisonment, Possession of a Knife or Firearm During Commission of a Crime, Terroristic Threats, Armed Robbery and Theft by Taking.

Cowan’s whereabouts are not known at this time. Cowan is considered to armed and dangerous. Anyone having knowledge of his whereabouts is urged to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 439-6066.

UPDATE 2:14 p.m Thursday, April 27, 2017: Lt. Daren Osborn has contacted FetchYourNews.com and reported that Jeffrey Dean Cowan was apprehended in Illinois and is in custody. The stolen vehicle was apprehended with him. UCSO is in the process of extraditing him back to GA.
