Mr. Roger Gene Foss age 87 of Haley Circle Blairsville and also Okeechobee, FL. passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 2, 2019 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Foss was born on September 17, 1932 in St. Paul, MN., the son of the late Elmer Foss and the late Hazel Krinke Foss. He was a veteran of the US Air Force of the Korean War. Roger was a very avid golfer and loved woodworking. He was a loving husband, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Mr. Foss was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving Mr. Foss are his loving wife and best friend of twenty seven years, Betty Ann Card Foss of Blairsville, two daughters and one son in law, Jill and Don Rigoulot of Whitmore Lake, MI., Ann Foss of Princeton, IN., two sisters and one brother in law, Nancy and Ralph Harris of Minnetonka, MN., Carol Wetmiller of Orlando, FL., three grandchildren, Christopher and Mike Rigoulot, Katherine Goodman, two great grandchildren, Alexander Goodman and Christopher Rigoulot, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the View Grill on October 12, 2019 from 3pm-5pm. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Union County Humane Society Mtn. Shelter in memory of Mr. Foss.

Madeline Catherine Beaver: Obituary

Mrs. Madeline Catherine Beaver, 69, of Young Harris, GA passed away on Tuesday October 1, 2019 following an extended illness. Madeline was born on October 16, 1949 in Schererville, IN., the daughter of the late John Kolling and the late Anna Hoffman. Madeline enjoyed swimming, watching movies, taking walks and spending time with all her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Ralph Beaver in 2012. Madeline was of the Eckankar faith.

Surviving Mrs. Beaver is one daughter, Shelly Singleton of Murphy, NC., two sons and a daughter-in-law, John & Jessica Beaver of Lawrenceville, GA., and Mark Elliott of Bethlehem, GA. The following grandchildren also survive: Preston Singleton, Kelsey Cline, Jaeda Beaver, Abigail Beaver, Amelia Beaver, two great grandchildren, Keagan Cline, and Isaiah Cline. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Devita Dialysis Center in Canton, GA in Madeline’s memory.

Ada Jewel Collis Callihan: Obituary

Ada Jewel Collis Callihan, age 95, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. She was born in Fannin County on June 24, 1924, to the late Allen Collis and Gaily Garrison Collis. Ada was raised in a large family and loved to tell stories about her childhood and all the good times they had together. She loved her family tremendously! Ada was always working in her flowers, and her yard was beautiful. Above all, she loved spending time with her family. Ada was a fantastic wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a woman of great faith who, through the years, had been active in her church, Sunday School, and in the church choir. Ada was the oldest member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she had attended all her life. She will be missed very much, but what a Life to celebrate! Ada was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Callihan, daughter-in-law, Shirley Callihan, sisters, Ruth Anderson, Edith Cochran, and Grace Callihan, brothers, Clint Collis, Young Rose, Glen Collis, and Earl Collis.

Survivors include her daughters, Gwen (Bob) Butler and Betty (Ed) Hawkins, son, Terry Callihan, grandchildren, Crystal, Joey, and Brad, great-grandchildren, Bristol and Joshua, sister, Juanita Schwab, and special friends, Ruth and Martha Callihan.

Funeral services will be held at the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, October 5, 2019, at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Jerry Banks and Rev. Denny Hawkins officiating. Music will be provided by Nancy Watkins and Joel Collis, and The Banks Family. Pallbearers: David Land, Larry Sosebee, Lynn Cole, Rick Callihan, Wayne Watkins, and Chris Hulsey. Interment will follow in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Robert Earl Burgreen: Obituary

The Rev. Robert Earl Burgreen, age 88 of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Lovejoy, GA., passed away on Friday September 20, 2019 at McLeod Seacoast Hospital following a brief illness. Bob was born on June 2, 1931 in New Haven, CT., the son of the late A.L. & Zella Burgreen. He is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Burgreen.

Surviving Rev. Burgreen is his loving wife and best friend of 27 years, Lauren Burgreen of Blairsville, GA., and his sister, Zella Forsythe, of Raytown, MO.   Bob is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark & Anna Burgreen of Augusta, GA., and Michael & Leslie Roscoe of Bethune, SC. Several grandchildren also survive, Diana & Peter Martinez, Caroline Burgreen, Derek & Becka Turner, and Stephanie Turner. Bob also had three great-grandchildren:  Michael Martinez, Victoria Martinez and Charlotte Turner.

Bob was ordained a Priest in 1957 and served in the Episcopal and later in the Anglican Church until 2019.  He enjoyed woodworking, making others laugh with his wicked sense of humor, and loved the mountains in Georgia where he lived for the past five years.  Bob attended St. Luke’s Church in Blue Ridge, GA.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Luke’s Church in Blue Ridge, GA. with Rev. Victor Morgan officiating.  The family will meet with friends in the church Parish hall following the service.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Luke’s Church in Blue Ridge, GA

Edith Belle Hunter: Obituary

Mrs. Edith Belle Hunter, age 71, of Lilburn, GA, passed away peacefully with her loving husband by her side at her home on Monday, September 16, 2019, following a brief illness. Mrs. Hunter, the daughter of the late Elmer Sosebee and late Elnora Powell Sosebee was born on January 21, 1948, in Young Harris, GA. Edith enjoyed much of her time reading mystery novels and feeding her many critters. She was known and loved for her quick wit and generous heart. Every Christmas since 1968, she ensured that each child from her family would receive special and individualized gifts. Behind her mischievous smirk, she was a loving and caring wife, sister, and aunt. Mrs. Hunter was of the Baptist faith and attended Mountain Park First Baptist Church.

 

Surviving Mrs. Hunter are her loving husband and best friend of 52 years, Earl Hunter of Lilburn, sister, Jean Thomas of Young Harris, three brothers and sisters in law, Bill and Geraldine Sosebee of Buford, Fred and Carolyn Sosebee of Gainesville, George and Wanda Sosebee of Young Harris, and uncle/cousin, Allen Sosebee of Young Harris. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019, at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Bradley Thomas officiating. Special music will be presented by Josie Bradley. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers: Ryan Rogers, Leon Sosebee, Steve Hunter, Matthew Hunter, Zachary Sosebee, Stanley Hunter, and Dereck Johnson. Interment will follow in the West Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends on Wednesday evening from 6-8:00 pm at the Bill Head Funeral Home in Lilburn as well as on Thursday evening at the Mountain View Funeral Home from 6-9:00 pm. Shirley Moss Karlsson: Obituary

Shirley Moss Karlsson of Hiawassee, GA., daughter of Lowell Moss and Lois Neal Moss, born on June 13, 1948, died on September 1, 2019 from an extended illness. Shirley volunteered at the VFW Thrift Store for many years and loved meeting people. Shirley enjoyed baking as well as collectibles. She was an extensive traveler.

Shirley is survived by her mother, Lois Moss, grandson, Austin McClure, granddaughter, Jocelyn McClure, brother, David Moss, and a brother & sister-in-law, Paul & Martha Moss, a sister & brother-in-law, Joan (Moss) and Roger Youngblood, and an uncle, Charles Neal.

Shirley’s two children, daughter, Belinda Bright Shook, and son, Shane McClure preceded her in death, as well as her father, Lowell Moss. Shirley has many nieces & nephews as well as numerous friends. A special mention is for Louise Kelley, who was known as “the best friend in the whole wide world.” Shirley will be surely missed.

Mark Wright: Obituary

Mr. Mark Wright age 74 of Bunker Hill Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 14, 2019 in the North East GA Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Wright was born on May 9, 1945 in Union County, the son of the late Kenneth Wright and the late Pearl Shields Wright. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had owned and operated Mark Wright Trucking for many years. Mark enjoyed coon hunting, camping and riding four wheelers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and also a daughter, Heidi Sosebee who passed away on April of this year and two brothers, Eugene and W.H. Wright. Mark was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church.

Surviving Mr. Wright are his loving wife and best friend of forty three years, Jane Wilson Wright of Blairsville, two daughters and sons in law, Kim and Keith Zimmerman of Murphy, Lynette and Stanley Dyer of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Jim and Kelly Wilson of Blairsville, one son in law, Terry Sosebee of Blairsville, twelve grandchildren, Bill, Courtney, Nicole, Cody, Caleb, Logan, Megan, Levi, Kyle, Katie, Konnor and Brittaney, twelve great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday August 16, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Dr. Jon Jacobs officiating. Special music will be presented by Spirit Led and Bob Woodham. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Levi Zimmerman, Konnor Sosebee, Kyle Sosebee, Josh Swanson, Logan Rudd, Cody Rudd, Bill Wilson, Caleb Wilson and C.J. Lusk. Louise Hitch Knight: Obituary

Louise Hitch Knight, 87, of Blue Ridge, Georgia, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, August 8, 2019. She was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, on November 1, 1931, to Frank Hitch and Agnes Martin Hitch. She graduated from North Georgia College in 1951. Lou married Gordon E Knight in 1956. For many years she lived in Atlanta and worked for General Services Administration of the Federal Government until her retirement in 1993. She then worked for The Arthritis Foundation. In 2001, she moved to Blue Ridge. Lou loved cats, the color blue, reading books, working crossword puzzles, and her church. She had a great sense of humor and could light up a room with her smile. Lou is survived by her daughter, Marilou Knight (Rebecca Williams) and her daughters in love, Pam Garrett and Denise Ellwanger. There will be a Celebration of Life Service on September 7, 2019, at the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM. To honor Lou, please wear blue and cat items. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of your choice and to Georgia Mountain Hospice.

Leo Michael Goergen: Obituary

Mr. Leo Michael Goergen age 92 of Blairsville, GA passed away peacefully on Monday August 5, 2019 in the Union General Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Goergen was born on July 6, 1927 in Buffalo, NY., the son of the late John J. Goergen and the late Lucille M. Koch Goergen. Leo was a loving father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. He was a very talented painter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stephany Zubrzycki  Goergen in 2006, his siblings, John, Catherine, Elizabeth, Raymond, Paul (his twin), Rita and Frances. Leo was devout Christian of the Catholic Faith and was a member of St. William Catholic Church in Murphy, NC.

Surviving Mr. Goergen are his children and their spouses, David and XianLan Goergen of Largo, FL., Kenneth and Helene Goergen of Seminole, FL., Stephen Goergen of Blairsville, Thomas and Lavada Goergen of Box Elder, SD., Barbara Goergen of Blairsville, Cindy and Bob Spaulding of Blairsville, one brother Rev. David Goergen, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday August 13, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel in Blairsville, GA with Deacon Carl Hubbell officiating followed by a Mass also on Tuesday at 1:00 pm at the St. William Catholic Church in Murphy with Father Alejandro Ayala officiating. The family will meet with friends following the services. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Food for the Poor.org or to Healing Hands Community Clinic in Blairsville, GA in Mr. Goergen’s memory. Interment will follow in the St. William’s Columbarium where he will rest next to his beloved wife Stephany.

Mr. Zelmer Robert Gooch age 81 of Dalton, GA passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 31, 2019 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Gooch was born on October 3, 1937 in Atlanta, GA., the son of the late William “Bill” Gooch & Myrtice Lunsford.  Mr. Gooch operated Gooch’s General Store in Suches for many years as well as serving on the Union Co. Rescue Squad. He is also preceded in death by two grandfathers and two grandmothers, Wash & Julie Gooch and William & Rebecca Lunsford. Mr. Gooch was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Gooch is his loving wife of 60 years, Iva Lee Coker Gooch of Dalton, GA., two sons and a daughter-in-law; Alan & Kristie Gooch of Cleveland, GA., Kevin Gooch of Cleveland, GA., one daughter and a son-in-law; Niki & Jerry Gerber of Dalton, GA., a sister and brother-in-law; Ima Jean & Bob Tritt of Woodstock, GA., four grandchildren; Kyle & Rheanna Gooch, Kaleb Gooch, Conner Haynes and Kason Gooch, and a great-grandchild; Deacon Gooch, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Rev. Norman Thomas Stewart, age 95 of Blue Ridge, GA passed away January 6, 2020, at Piedmont Mountain Side Hospital. Mr. Stewart was born September 30, 1924, in Fannin County to the late John Stewart and Myrtle Cochran Stewart. Norman was the fifth child from a large family of fifteen children. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church for most of his life.
Norman worked at The Tennessee Chemical Company in the acid department for thirty-two years and retired in 1984. He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Delores Stewart, son, Norman Thomas Stewart Jr., mother, Myrtle Cochran Stewart, father, John Stewart, sisters, Eddie Hyde, Edith Stewart, Etyhel Allen and Effie Free, brothers, Arvil Stewart, Winston Stewart, sisters, Eslee Earls and Marie Dykes, brother, Johnny Stewart, sisters, Willa Mae Franklin and Reathel Barton, and brother, Harold Stewart.

Survivors include wife, Mary Pauline Stewart, daughters, Wanda Stewart (Dan) Long, Patricia Stewart (Ernest) Long, and Kathrine Stewart (Randy) Brown, son, Norman Gerald (Sandy) Stewart, sisters, Glee Wright and Thelma Davenport. Also many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services: Thursday, January 9, 2020, at 2:00 pm at the Henry-Cochran F.H. with the Rev. Ronnie Aberthany and Rev. Phillip Davenport officiating. Music provided by Caylor Family Singers. Interment will follow in Concord Baptist Church. Pallbearers: Gerald Stewart, Micheal Long, Scott Long, Chris Brown, Charles Parrish Jr., and Jeff Stanley. Mary Carolyn Jones, age 78 of Copperhill, passed away on December 30, 2019, at Hospice Of Chattanooga Care Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mrs. Jones was born on February 9, 1941, in Copperhill, Tn to late Cecil A Collis and Ruby Lorene Brooks. Mary loved her job working at Walmart in Murphy, NC. She adored her nephews Brandon, Jordan, Cody, and Tyler and thought of them as her own. One of the many things she cherished in her lifetime was Spanky. Mrs. Mary Jones was truly an extraordinary woman and was admired by everyone who knew her. Heaven gained a beautiful angel who will be missed each and every day. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold G. Jones, and her sister Judy Collis.

Survivors include her sister, Kathleen Walden, sister, Brenda Brackett, brother, Jim Collis(Karen), sister, Joy C. Collis, and sister Jane Morrow (Dwight).

   Mr. John Harold Garrett age 80 of Old Gum Log Rd. Blairsville passed away on Sunday December 1, 2019 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Garrett was born on Jan. 27, 1939 in Suches, GA., the son of the late Henry Garrett and the late Mary Harkins Garrett. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. John was a veteran of the US Army with over twenty three years of service. He loved fishing, hunting and loafering with his cousin Earl. He was preceded in death by his parents and also three sisters, Lizzie Grizzle, Essie Davis and Hattie Garrett, three brothers, Willard, Leaford and William Garrett. John was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Garrett are his loving wife and best friend of fifty two years, Dorothy Sue Ross Garrett of Blairsville, two daughters and one son in law, Shirley and Scott Durrett of Tulsa, OK., Hillary Garrett of Bixby, OK., three sisters and brothers in law, Shelby and J.W. Jenkins of Bunnell, FL., Helen and Ronnie Abercrombie of Suches, Edith and Thomas Bradford of Calhoun, one grandson, Ryan Campbell, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Cheryl Lee Helton, age 48, of Gainesville, GA, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA. She was born in Ducktown, TN, on Tuesday, October 26, 1971, to the late Steven & Sandra Wilcox Helton. Cheryl enjoyed her work as a Patient Care Tech for Northeast Georgia Medical Center. She not only offered assistance for her patients, but she also provided a kind, friendly, and caring personality. Cheryl will be remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her children; Alexius Helton, Austin Helton and, Heyli Colbert, grandchildren; Jorrden Crowder, Jayse Crowder, and Annleigh Crowder. He was born February 4, 1941 in Wayside, WI to the late Harold and Bernice Janry Schultz. Mr. Schultz moved here 16 years ago from Kewaunee, WI. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was retired from Schreiber Foods. Mr. Schultz was of the Lutheran Faith. He was an avid Packers fan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Maxine Schultz of Blairsville, GA, four children, Tina Pickard of DePere, WI, Tammy (Philip) Newberry of Blue Ridge, GA, Troy Schultz of Epworth, GA, and Todd (Dawn) Schultz of Green Bay, WI, sisters, Bonnie (Gary) Paultz of Reedsville, WI, and Karen Schimek of Green Bay, WI, brothers, Scott (Linda) Schultz and Giles (Debbie) Schultz both of Reedsville, WI, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted but if you wish make memorial donations in Mr. Schultz memory to Life Care Medical Transport, 1058C Kiutuestia Creek RD, Blairsville, GA.
