Mrs. Mildred Hattie Grizzle age 77 of White Pine Trail Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday December 11, 2018 following a brief illness. Mrs. Grizzle was born on March 27, 1941 in Union County, the daughter of the late Walter Lovell and the late Roselle Gibson Lovell. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Mildred’s family was her life and lived to take care of each of them. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Lovell and four sisters, Bonnie Seabolt, Ruby Garrett, Lillian Garrett and Ellina Stanley. Mrs. Grizzle was a member of Bunker Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Grizzle are one daughter, Betty Cook of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Larry and Andrea Seabolt of Blairsville, four sisters, Opal McGaha, of Hiawassee, Geneva Garrett of Suches, Linda Payne and Bessie Cain both of Gainesville, one brother, Earl Lovell of Blairsville, six grandchildren, Connie Draughn, Curtis Cook, Jason Seabolt, Amanda Spooner, Eric Seabolt, and Ashley Seabolt, ten great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 13, 2018 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Gerald McGaha officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Jason Seabolt , Eric Seabolt, Curtis Cook, Chris Spooner, Jerry Gilreath and Brandan Draughn. Special music will be presented by the Bunker Hill Church Choir. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be William Lee. Interment will follow in the Confidence Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-9:00 pm.

Mrs. Cora West age 76 of East Second Street, Blue Ridge passed away peacefully at the Pruitt Health Center on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 following a long illness. Mrs. West was born on November 5, 1943 to the late David and Florence White. Cora was of the Baptist faith and in her spare time she loved to garden and do yard work. Surviving Cora are a son and daughter in law David and Carrie West Sr. of Blairsville, sister Gail Brown of Morganton, sister and brother in law Edna and Jim Ames of Carlton MI., three grandchildren David West Jr., Richard and Ashley West , Betty Sue and Brian Mull, twelve great grandchildren, many other friends and relatives also survive. Mr. Joe Posey “J.P.” Southerland age 94 of Jones St. Blairsville passed away peacefully in the Chatuge Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 29, 2018 following an extended illness. Mr. Southerland was born on October 8, 1924, the son of the late Robert Southerland and the late Florence Spiva Southerland. He was a lifelong resident of Union County. J.P. was known as the “Peach Man” and sold produce for over forty five years in Union and the surrounding counties. He could fix just about anything but specialized in tinkering with watches and lawn mowers. He enjoyed collecting knives, growing flowers, going to Flea Markets and piddling outdoors. J.P. was preceded in death by his parents and also two sons, Mike and Joe Southerland, a daughter, Susie Southerland and a sister, Louisa Garrett. Mr. Southerland was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving J.P. are his loving wife and companion of fifty years, Beulah Davis of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Jimmy and Jackie Southerland of Marietta, his step children, Ben Hope of Blairsville, Michael and Tina Davis of Dahlonega, Larry and Glenda Davis of Blairsville, Glenda Jones of Blairsville, three grandchildren, Sandra and David Moss, Amy Williams, Joanna Martin, two great grandchildren, numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday December 2, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Pastor Ray Potts officiating. Special music will be presented by John Nix. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Garrett Moss, Braxton Martin, Michael Davis Jr., James Davis, Bradley Jones and Jason Jones. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Chris Strickland and Joe Burch. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-8:00 pm.

Mr. Michael Wesley “Mex” Simmons age 29 of Fairview Rd. Andrews NC passed away at his residence on Tuesday November 20, 2018. Mr. Simmons was born on July 25, 1989 in Andrews NC, the son of Terry Simmons and Jeannie Sharp Simmons. Mex was a landscaper for several years. He was a member of the American Hunting Association and the NWTF. He loved hunting and fishing and could catch a fish out of a mud hole. He loved everyone, had many friends, and never met a stranger. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Simmons are his mother and stepfather Jeannie & Jake Buchanan, his father Terry Simmons, his grandmother Linda Simmons, his son Isaiah, brother and best friend Steven Simmons and brother ,Ryan Simmons, sisters Amber and Madison Simmons, uncles Donnie and Chris Simmons and uncle Adrian Sharp, aunt Mandy Humphries, cousins Tony Sharp, Ashley Cochran, Holly Prather, Dakota Gibby, and Zakk Humphries. Many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday November 26, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Grace Fellowship Baptist Church in Andrews NC with Pastor Bo Phillips and Pastor Dr. Jack Hollowell officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, John Speagle, Matthew McTaggart, Shawn Beiker, Ryan Bevins, Justin Streeter, John Gaither, Donnie Simmons, and Scott Douthitt. Mrs. Thelma C. Tipton age 78 of Blairsville died Wednesday October 31 at Union General with her loving family by her side. Thelma was born on March 29, 1940 to the late Arthur and Lassie Ferguson Clore. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Delmar Tipton in 2008, three sisters, Regina Clore, Roena Flowers, & Sadie Garland. Mrs. Tipton was a member of the Owltown Church of God and loved spending time with family and preparing meals. Surviving Mrs. Tipton are son and daughter in law Roger and Vickie Tipton of Blairsville one daughter and son in law, Kriste and Jim Hughes of Akron Oh. step children Willie and Sabina Tipton Blue Ridge, Jennie and Glenn Lambert of Charleston, SC., Sandy and Nicky Nicholson Hiawassee, Kathy and Larry Seabolt, Blue Ridge , sisters Dot Messer of Blue Ridge, GA, Radie and Leonard Ware of Akron, OH., many grandchildren and great grand children ,also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel in Blairsville, GA on Saturday November 3rd, 2018 at 2:00pm with Rev. Roger Beck officiating. The Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Mr. Thomas Andrew “TA” Floyd who passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Floyd was a lifelong resident on Union County and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masons. T.A. loved to raise, train, show and trade horses. He also enjoyed buying older tractors, restoring them to better than new condition, and then selling them so that he could buy and restore another.
T.A. is survived by his wife, Dorothy McCarter Floyd, daughter Jackie Floyd Sexton and her husband, Michael of Cumming, GA; Son Tommy Floyd and his wife, Lisa of Canton, GA; Sister, Verna Puett of Blairsville; brother, Kenneth Floyd of Blairsville and sister, Jo Ann Miriani of Detroit, MI; and grandchildren, Christopher Sexton and Casey Floyd. Many other relatives and a host of friends also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Martin, Rev. Bryan Mason and Rev. RL Martin officiating. Special music will be presented by Teren Hooper accompanied by his father, Terry Hooper. Interment will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Cleveland, GA formerly of Union County passed away peacefully on Saturday October 13, 2018 in the North East GA Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Duckworth was born on July 25, 1952 in Young Harris, GA., the son of the late Rev. Buford Duckworth and the late Bonnie Mae Deyton Duckworth. Stanley loved fishing and spending time with his family. He was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and also two sisters, Regina Buffington and Ellen Cagle and two brothers, Troy and Robert Duckworth. Stanley was of the Baptist faith.

Obituaries October 3, 2018Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Jack Junior Parker, age 90, of Blairsville, Georgia, who passed away Thursday, September 27th, 2018 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mr. Parker was born in Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late Newman J. Parker and the late Laura Pickelsimer Parker. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, and served in Korea. Jack was a member of Blairsville’s Kiwanis Club and the Union County Retired Educators. Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Caroline Parker Barnard; a brother, James Earl Parker; and a sister, Barbara Colwell.
Family members left to share in Jack’s legacy are: his wife, Peggy C. Parker, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey L. and Diane Parker, of Blairsville, Georgia; sisters: Jean Kendall of Hiawassee, Jane Collins of Blairsville; brothers: Ray Parker and Bill Parker, both of Blairsville; and Zane Parker, of Greensboro, North Carolina; grandchildren: Chris Parker, Holly Parker, Karen Parker, Brent Parker and Jamie Marshall; great grandchildren: Lucas Parker and Lily Parker.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, October 6th, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Pastor Jerry Helton officiating. Burial will be in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Chris Parker, Justin Collins, Mike Parker, Parker Daniels, Coleson Daniels, Lucas Parker, and Gary Kendall. Josh McCall prepares to face Doug Collins in upcoming election

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – Josh McCall hopes to receive the Democratic nomination in the race for Georgia’s 9th congressional district seat.
This seat is currently held by incumbent Congressman Doug Collins. Collins has been Georgia’s 9th District representative since 2013.

McCall has been traveling the district during his campaign, and made a stop at the Fannin County Democratic meeting to discuss with residents why he should represent our district.
Tired of hearing negativity in politics and disagreeing with many of today’s political moves, McCall stated that it had gotten to the point where he dreaded looking at his phone to get the latest news.
“Inevitably, as though it is some kind of force of fate, I do open my phone because I do care about my country and I want to know what’s happening,” McCall added.
Criticizing the Republicans, McCall referred to the party’s Debt Clock: “because everything that goes into feeding the poor people, those Republicans are putting it on the clock.”
“They just passed a bill handing over the fortunes of our children that was supposed to go into green infrastructure and the educational facilities of tomorrow,” McCall spoke of the party’s hypocrisy, “and it went into the pockets of billionaires.”
McCall added, “Let me tell you the red letters of our (Democrats) debt clock. They are written in the blood of students who died at Parkland. They’re written in the blood of the children who died daily from gun violence in this nation, which is breaking out like an epidemic.”
According to McCall Republicans used to care about urgent matters such as the National Debt and what is being left to the nation’s children, but their concerns have since shifted.
McCall wants to see focus put on healthcare and the costs related to this field, stating, “Those are the threats that are really facing us. You deserve life and you deserve health.”
“It is my fundamental belief that nobody should die because they are poor, and that nobody should be poor because they are dying,” McCall reiterated his passion to see meaningful change.
On national matters, McCall would like to see corporations “put on check” for environmental damage, and for lobbyists and organizations to have less of a hold on our government, citing that NRA (National Rifle Association) money is what stops real change to gun control.
“We are in too many nations right,” McCall said stating that we should pull forces out and invest at home,”There is not a single nation with a possible exception of Korea, that is any better off than it was before we invaded it.”
McCall would like to form a Public Service Coalition to serve at home and focus on social needs. The Civil Conservation Corp. could provide services such as taking care of the elderly in their homes and aid in environmental protection and clean up in exchange for scholarships to colleges.
For a two year term, McCall suggests, participants could receive a two-year technical degree scholarship, and for a four-year term, participants could receive a scholarship for a four year Bachelor’s Degree.
McCall switched gears to speak of his stance on the Second Amendment, “I firmly believe in the Second Amendment. The problem is the NRA does not. They only believe in that second part that makes them money.”
Citing that no one is safe in any public space in today’s climate, McCall emphasized that there is need for a well regulated militia.
“If they are law abiding citizens of sound mind, I want them to have that bolt action rifle. Their hunting rifle,” McCall stated, but also explained that there needs to be meaningful change.
One simple solution that he felt could have a lasting impact would be to have a 10 bullet limit on magazines, and outlaw removable clips. Other solutions would be to have gun owners secure weapons in their homes to keep them away from children. McCall stated that Georgia was number one in the nation for toddlers to die of gun related deaths.
“I don’t believe in confiscation,” McCall made very clear if new reform were to pass.
Locally McCall would like to focus on infrastructure in the 9th District, and have improvements to infrastructure done by people trained in our area.
If McCall were to receive the Democratic nomination, he spoke of where he differs from his Republican opponent Doug Collins.
“I believe that Doug Collins is most vulnerable in his complacency,” McCall stated and added that this election year Collins cannot ignore the Democratic party.
“Compassion and cooperation are the center pieces of my campaign,” McCall said and then added, “That is where he is vulnerable, he has not a compassionate or cooperative bone in his body, and that is our strength.”
McCall concluded by saying, “Am I my brother’s keeper? My answer to that is a resounding yes. This race is truly not about me. I have faith in the people of the 9th District.”

COLLINS BILL TO HONOR FALLEN CLERMONT MARINE SENT TO PRESIDENT’S DESK
WASHINGTON—The Senate last night voted unanimously to pass H.R. 3821, legislation to rename Georgia’s Clermont Post Office in honor of Zack T. Addington. Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) introduced the bill this September, and it passed the House in November.
“Lance Corporal Zack Addington represents the selfless courage that’s cultivated in northeast Georgia, and I’m excited to see this bill leave Congress and head to the president’s desk for his signature,” said Collins.
Collins also honored Addington when he spoke about the bill on the House floor.
Background:
Known to his neighbors as Zack, Addington joined the United States Marine Corps in 1967. A native of Clermont, he became a rifleman in the 3rd Marine Division of the Fleet Marine Force and deployed to Vietnam that year. Addington was promoted to Lance Corporal and served his country honorably until he was killed in action in May 1968.
That June, Addington received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon in recognition of his service there.

Seth Paul Ratliff August 1, 1961-June 2, 2019 Born the eldest son of Randy and Lois Ratliff on August 1, 1961 in Pequannock New Jersey, Seth Paul Ratliff entered eternal rest following a brave battle with cancer on June 2, 2019 in Blairsville, Georgia. Paul was preceded in death by his younger brother, Randy Ratliff, Jr., maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Seth Paul Triplett and paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Roy Shaffer. Paul is survived by his son, Eric Paul Ratliff, Kissimmee, Fl.; former spouse Lisa Pearson Ratliff, St. Cloud, Fl.; parents, Randy and Lois Ratliff, Blairsville, Ga.; sisters, Ginny Ratliff, Danville, KY.; Rhonda Ratliff-Wagoner (Bryan), Macon, Ga.; brother Shawn Ratliff, Blairsville, Ga.; and several precious nieces and nephews.
Paul was blessed with exceptional artistic ability, working his entire life as a skilled craftsman, carpenter and stone mason. Many homeowners and businesses throughout Florida and Georgia benefitted from Paul’s talent, making his creations a lasting testament and legacy to Paul’s strong work ethic and skill.
Paul was instantly recognizable with fire red hair and a personality to match. He truly lit up a room with his wide smile, booming laugh and lively spirit. Paul loved nature and traveling. Among his favorite memories was a family vacation and road trip to Alaska, where he spent time in the beautiful outdoors with those he loved. Always the artist, Paul developed an interest in clock-making in later years, pursuing it with his typical passion and pride. Paul’s eternally positive outlook benefitted him in life, especially as cancer took hold. He kept a smile to the end, grateful for the kindness and care shown to him by hospice, nurses and relatives.
Paul’s departure weighs heavily on his family, but we are certain Heaven is full of music, laughter and celebration with the arrival of his beloved spirit. Special thanks and recognition are extended to the staff at Union County Nursing Home, Blairsville Georgia for their exceptional care and support during Paul’s final days. Mr. Robert “Bob” Wayne Wilson age 83 of Wilson Way Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Monday May 27, 2019 following an extended illness. Mr. Wilson was born on June 16, 1935 in Houston, TX., the son of the late Robert E. Lee Wilson and the late Edith Dyer Wilson. He was a veteran of the US Marines in the Korean War. Bob enjoyed building and had built three homes in Blairsville. He was an electrician by trade. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Wade Wilson in 1987.
Surviving Mr. Wilson are his loving wife and best friend of sixty one years, Nancy Joorman Wilson of Blairsville, one son, Larry Wilson of Blairsville, one daughter, Marilee Seymour of Port St. Lucie, FL., one brother, Sam Wilson of TX., five grandchildren, Mark Seymour of Houston, TX., Tara Klems-Seymour of Ocala, FL., Kristina Wilson and Brandon Wilson of Stuart, FL., Maggie Arrington of Dawsonville, GA., many other relatives and friends also survive.

Obituaries March 7, 2019Dee Rennie
Mrs. Dee Rennie, age 65, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Monday, February 18th, 2019 at her home. She was born on February 9, 1954 in Albany, GA, to the late William & Patricia Brown Johnson. A member of the United Methodist Faith, Mrs. Rennie was a devoted care giver and case manager with Homestead Hospice. She was an avid reader and would read any books she could get. On December 9, 1972 in North Miami Beach Florida she married the love of her life, Robert Edward Rennie and had two sons. She will be remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her loving husband, Robert Edward Rennie and sons, Dr. Robert William Rennie and Christopher Brett Rennie.
There are no services planned at this time. Mrs. Rennie will be placed in rest at Union Memory Gardens in the Columbarium.

October 20, 1923 – February 27, 2019
Mrs. Florence Hazel Lyke age 95 of Arrowood Pointe Blairsville passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 27, 2019 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Lyke was born on October 20, 1923 in Jersey City, NJ., the daughter of the late Bertram Burstell and the late Florence Filkens Burstell. Florence volunteered most of her life giving a lot of her time to Little Leagues and the Girl Scouts and many others. She was a loving and caring mother grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Lyke in 2003 and also a brother, Bertram Burstell. Mrs. Lyke was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Metuchen, NJ.
Surviving Mrs. Lyke are one daughter and son in law, Florence and Robert Campbell of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, William and Maureen Lyke of Longwood, FL., three grandchildren, Scott and Dana Campbell, Timothy and Tasha Campbell, Wendi and Tom Burns, two great grandchildren, Rhett Campbell and Charlotte Campbell, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A Graveside entombment service will be held on Friday March 15, 2019 at 12:30 pm from the Woodbridge Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ. with Rev. Anna Thomas officiating where she will rest next to her beloved husband, William. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Lyke’s memory. The family will meet with friends following the services at the mausoleum.

Mr. John Michael Burkhardt Sr. age 69 of Diana Drive Blairsville formerly of Staten Island, NY,. passed away on Wednesday February 20, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness. Mr. Burkhardt was born on Feb. 1, 1950 in Queens, NY., the son of the late John G. Burkhardt and the late Annie Kelly Burkhardt. He was a veteran of the US Marines of the Vietnam War. He loved working with special needs children and working with animals. John loved being outdoors. He was a former member of the Elks club. He was a loving husband and father. John was preceded in death by his parents and also a brother, Martin Burkhardt. John was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Burkhardt are his loving wife and best friend of forty years, Linda Peterson Burkhardt of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, John and Diane Burkhardt of Fredricksburg, VA., his two grand puppies, Bella and Ruby, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 23, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. David Feathers officiating. Special music will be presented by Bruce Blaisdell. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Christopher Peterson, Cody Peterson, Jamie Bermuniz, Joe Lively, Alex Rodriguez, Sal Coniglio, Nick Klpschinski and Sam Nichols. Interment will follow in the Meadow View Cemetery with the North GA Honor Guard conducting Military Honors. Flowers are accepted of if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Homestead Hospice in John’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12-2:00 pm.
