The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Memorial Services for Carol Ann (Fleming) Head of Blairsville who Celebrated her 79th birthday in Heaven on October 23, 2018!

She will be warmly remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her family: Daughter, LuAnn Head, of Blairsville; Son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. Head, III and his wife, Stacy Torbett Head, of Blairsville; Son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Heather Head of Redding, California; and Son, Kevin C. Head and his spouse, Frank Lanciani, of Hyannis, Massachusetts; Also, sharing in her legacy are four grandchildren: Joshua Rose and his wife, Rebecca; Matthew Faris, Jiraiya Head, and Astraea Head; and great grandchildren, Zoey Grace Nicholson and Dawson Asher Rose.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Union County with Pastor Mark Burgess officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Union Memory Gardens Cemetery following the service.

The family will gather with friends from 10 a.m. until the service begins.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Carol’s Memory be sent to the charity organization of your choice.

Miss Heather Renee Trask age 33 of Overlook Ct. Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday October 14, 2018 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Miss Trask was born on Feb. 1, 1985 in Ravenna, OH. She was a lifelong resident of Union County and attended the Union County School System. At the time of her death she was employed with Copeland’s Restaurant. Heather loved camping, tubing the river and most of all loved her children. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister and grand daughter. Heather was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Heather are her parents, Lisa and Donnie Fortenberry of Blairsville, her four children, Dillon Tre Mullavey, Jax Harlan Trask both of Blairsville,  Ryah Grace McCullough of Ravenna, OH., Kynslee Faith Trask of Blairsville, one brother and sister in law, Scott and Bailey Trask of Blairsville, her boyfriend, James Shubert of Blairsville, grandparents, Barbara Aleshire and William McMullen of Ravenna, Joan Fortenberry and the late Donald Fortenberry of Blairsville, great uncle, Fred Whitaker of Ravenna, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday October 18, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Charles Abernathy officiating. Special music will be presented by Charles Abernathy. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to help defray expenses in Heather’s memory. Mrs. Alice Henderson age 81 of James Henderson Rd. Young Harris passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday May 22, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Henderson was born on April 7, 1938 in Dalton, GA., the daughter of the late Grayson Ramey and the late Dallie Griggs Ramey. She was a lifelong resident of Union County. Alice loved sewing, quilting, gardening and growing flowers. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her one special request was that you all meet her in Heaven. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Henderson in 2010, two sons, Doug Henderson in 2008, Carlos Henderson in 2006, three brothers, Jerry and Junior Ramey and Frank Mckin and a sister, Josephine Mckin. Mrs. Henderson was a member of Many Forks Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Henderson are two sons and one daughter in law, Darrel and Mary Henderson of Franklin, NC., Sammy Henderson of Warne, four grandchildren, Venessa Long and Haley Henderson of Franklin, Eric Henderson of Ft. Oglethorpe and Dustin Henderson of Young Harris, two great grandchildren, Liam Long and Angyll Henderson, Rilee Flowers, Colton & Summer Henderson. several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday May 24, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. R.L. Martin and Rev. Billy Stiles officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Scott Lockaby, Ron Bradburn, Eric Henderson, Logan Quinton, Hunter Quinton and Junior Chastain. Special music will be L.D. & Irene Buchanan. Interment will follow in the Many Forks Baptist Church Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband James. The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Frank Ray Rogers, age 92 of Blairsville who passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019.

Ray was born in Union County, Georgia on February 19, 1927, one of nine children in the household. His family lived in the Young Cane area where his father operated a store . Eventually, they moved to Blairsville to expand the family’s merchant business. Ray volunteered for the Army when he was 17 years old and was sent to fight for his country during World War II. Ray returned home to continue his father’s mercantile business and begin a family of his own. Ray worked for the store and hauled merchandise in from Atlanta. The store grew to include groceries, clothing, and furniture.

Ray’s approach to business and life is admired by many and will long be remembered. A number of people have shared stories that “Ray Rogers kept my family from starving”. Ray had a big heart and would stand to help anyone. Ray had been an active member of both the Methodist Church for 88 years and in the Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 where he received his 70 years apron this past year. He enjoyed athletic competition and passed along that legacy to his family. He and others started the local Quarterback Club which still continues to this day.

He leaves behind: his loving wife of 72 years, Mamie Townsend Rogers; son & daughter-in-law, Terry & Jerri Rogers; daughter & son-in-law, Kay & Milton Bradley; brother, Tommy Rogers; and sister, Louise Lance. Also, sharing in his legacy are three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Randall Rogers and Roberta Seabolt Rogers; five brothers; and one sister.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Union County with Pastor Mark Burgess officiating. Eulogy will be given by Mandy Hunter. Music will be provided by Tommy Townsend and John Nix. Military Honors will be presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Interment will follow at Union Memory Gardens with Masonic Rites presented by Allegheny Lodge #114. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Larry Lance, Gary Lance, Robby Rogers, Mark Rogers, Tommy Rogers, and Robert Rogers. Honorary pallbearers include Rogers Food Store employees and friends.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces the death and graveside services for Christopher Wade Mason, age 67, of Fair Oaks Range, Texas, who passed away on Friday, February 15th, 2019 in Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Mr. Mason was born in Copperhill, Tennessee, a son of Geraldine Grizzle Mason, and the late Wade Robert Mason. He lived for many years in Buford, Georgia.

Surviving family members include his mother, Mrs. Geraldine Mason, of Winder, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, David Christopher and Lana Mason, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas; and son and daughter-in-law, Andrew Lee and Cristy Mason of Yellville, Arkansas; a brother, Gregory Mason, of Grayson, Georgia; three grandchildren: Hayleigh Mason, Kamryn Mason, and Sarah Mason. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Michael Nuel Mills (“Mike”), 71, of Blairsville, GA passed away peacefully at his home following an extended illness on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Mike was born on November 6, 1947 in Columbus, GA, son of the late Nuel Hugh Mills and the late Ruby Marion Bazemore (“Teeny”) Mills. Mr. Mills was a graduate of the University of Georgia and a longtime teacher with the Muscogee County School District in Columbus, GA where he also worked as the Assistant Director of Transportation totaling 33 years of service. Mike loved Georgia football, collectibles, NASCAR, history, bulldogs, and he loved to make people laugh and smile with his quick wit. Most of all he loved his family dearly, and he was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Mr. Mills was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville, GA.

Michael Nuel Mills is survived by his loving wife and best friend of forty seven years, Jane Ellen Powell (“Lightning”) Mills of Blairsville, GA; two sons, Stephen Mills of Clarksville, GA and Jason Mills (Kimberly Mills) of Camden, NC; three sisters, Donna Baker (Colonel William H. Baker) of Mobile, AL; Kathy Mills and Lisa Mills both of Columbus, GA; two grandchildren, Luke Mills and Lauren Mills both of Camden, NC; nephew, Christopher Baker (Ashley) of Mobile, AL; nieces Amy Baker and Angela Baker both of Mobile, AL; as well as many other family members and friends. Mike enriched the lives of many, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA with Mike’s cousin, Rev. Brian Bazemore officiating. Sandra was born on March 8, 1965 in Blairsville, GA., the daughter of Mary Jane Reid McCollum and the late Robert William McCollum. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Sandra always worked hard all of her life. She loved cleaning and doing housework. She was a very loving and caring mother, daughter, sister and grandmother. Sandra was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Sandra are her loving husband, Howard Bryson of Young Harris, her mother, Mary McCollum of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Chris and Clarice Bryson of Blairsville, two brothers, Donald McCollum and Merle McCollum both of Blairsville, one sister, Darlene Reed of Toccoa, GA., three grandchildren, McKenzie Dawn Bryson, Myra Leigh Bryson and Robert Gunner Bryson, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Bessie Lorene Bryant age 93 of Tanyard St. Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday February 3, 2019 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Bryant was born on Aptil 12, 1925 in Hayesville, NC., the daughter of the late Verlin Groves and the late Jessie Sampson Groves. She was a lifelong resident of Union County. Mrs. Bryant loved walking and being outdoors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Bryant, her sister, Mary Weaver and four brothers, Ray, Jay, Tom and Grady Groves. Mrs. Bryant was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Bryant are two sons and one daughter in law, Anthony and Faye Bryant of Blairsville, David Bryant of Blairsville, one daughter, Debbie Love of Blairsville, two brothers and sisters in law, Bill and Mona Bryant of California, Jack and Mary Groves of Georgia, one grandson, David Bryant, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Danny Davis age 74 of Langford Lane Blairsville passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home on Thursday January 24, 2019 following an extended illness. Mr. Davis was born on October 8, 1944 in Wilmington, DE., the son of the late Reginald C. Davis and the late Dorothy Sapp Davis. He was a veteran of the US National Guard. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Danny was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. He was preceded in death by his parents and also a grandson, Danny Davis III, two brothers, Reginald and James Davis and a sister, Barbara Dixon.

Surviving Mr. Davis are his loving wife and best friend of fifty three years, Margaret Joseph Davis of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Danny and Christine Davis Jr. of Lakeland, FL., one daughter and son in law, Dana and Mitchell Kogod of Blairsville, one sister and brother in law, Patty and Christopher Cain of Charlotte, NC., three grandchildren, Emily, Richard and Christine, three great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mary Lucille Bailey Barksdale, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville, MS. Mary was born on April 26, 1940 in Griffin, GA to John and Lucille Bailey. Mary had spent the last few years living at The Carrington Nursing Center in Starkville, MS.

She graduated from high school in Blairsville, attended Young Harris College and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in elementary education. Before moving to Starkville, Mary lived in Blairsville, GA. She worked at Union County Schools as an elementary teacher. Mary was a member of First Baptist Church Blairsville. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents John and Lucille Bailey and former husband, Melton Barksdale.
Mary is survived by sons John Melton Barksdale (Denese), Ackerman, MS and Joel Douglas Barksdale; grandsons John Bailey Barksdale (Sarah Beth), Brantley Barksdale and Cody Barksdale; granddaughter Vivian Barksdale all of Starkville, MS.

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Lee Ruth “Katie” Warren, age 87, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, who passed away on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Warren was born in Blairsville, and was the daughter of Jewell Harkins and Edith Gillespie Harkins. A loving homemaker at heart, “Katie” loved to cook, and she was very good at it. She was very happy when cooking for large groups of family and friends. Her husband, Junior Warren, preceded her in death. “Katie” was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Family members and friends left behind to treasure the memory of Katie are her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Darla Warren, of Blairsville; sisters, Louise Butts and Clara Nell Coker, both of Blairsville; a granddaughter, Heather Warren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Sunday, January 20th, 2019, at 3:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Daniel Harkins, J.M. Grizzle, Michael Warren, Marcus Warren, Joel Gooch, and Phillip Warren. Asked to serve as honorary escort to the family are Larry Harkins, Terry Warren, and Perry Groves. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jimmy Wesley “Bud” Nichols

Jimmy Wesley Nichols, 84, of Blairsville Georgia passed away on Tuesday, January 8th, 2019 at his daughter’s home in Young Harris, surrounded by his loving family

He was born to parents Alton and Nell Daniels Nichols on October 27, 1934 in Young Harris, Georgia. He was a life-long resident of both Towns and Union counties. Bud was a 1952 graduate of Towns County High School.

Due to his curiosity of how things work, Bud pursued a career path to become an electrician. Gaining experience, he worked for a time at the Rural Electric Authority and independent electrical contractors in the Tri-state area.

In 1955, Bud married Bennie Jo Conley and they began their lives together by building a home in Young Harris, Georgia. Having received the Lord as his Savior at age seven and became a member of Old Union Baptist Church in Young Harris. Later, Bud transferred his membership to First Baptist Church in Blairsville to worship with his new wife, Bennie Jo. In 1968, Bud became a deacon at First Baptist Church.

Professionally, Bud continued to pursue his career by establishing Blairsville Electric Company. He later attended Lanier Technical Institute to become certified in HVAC and plumbing. While at Lanier Tech, Bud was elected as State President of the Refrigeration Service Engineering Society.

In 1985 Bud retired from Blairsville Electric and began a new career as a Project Engineer for the Georgia Department of Corrections

Bud is survived by his daughter; Jimmie Jo Nichols of Young Harris, grandchildren; Emily and Bo McClure of Blairsville, Whitney McClure & Wes McClure of Cleveland, Tennessee, and Calley Gay of Athens, Georgia, great-grandchildren; Levi McClure, Anna Kate McClure, and Layla Grace McClure.

Preceding Bud in death is his loving wife; Bennie Jo Nichols in 2014, brother; Jack Nichols in 1953, and his companion dog; Dixie in 2017

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:00 am from the rock chapel of First Baptist Church with Rev. Jeremy Henderson & Rev. Derrick Hartley officiating as well as eulogies & readings by family. Special music will be presented by Scott Lance & Debbie Braswell. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers: Wesley McClure, Bo McClure, Jerry Dyer, Terry Jones, Sonny Freeman, and Lee Lemke. These gentleman will also serve as honorary pallbearers; Stanley Garrett, Lonnie Nichols, Jerry Jenkins, Larry Brackett, Hank McClure, David Gowder, Glen Hamby, Elliott Hill, and Craig Davenport. Interment will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Robert Thompson Atkinson, age 56 of Blairsville, GA passed away on Wednesday December 19, 2018 . Mr. Atkinson was born on November 25, 1962 in Wilson, NC the son of Robert Thompson Atkinson & Ann West Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was previously a resident of Franklin, TN until he moved to Blairsville in 2002. He was the owner of Our Hometown Pharmacy in Blairsville, GA. He was of the Methodist faith; he also enjoyed camping, hiking, and flying.

Surviving Mr. Atkinson is his wife, Lisa Atkinson of Blairsville, GA; his parents, Robert and Ann Atkinson of Young Harris, two sons, Nicholas and Brian; four siblings, Grady Atkinson of Walker County, GA., Kenyan Atkinson of Commerce, GA., Paul Atkinson of Longmont, CO., and Camille Smith of Cumming, GA.

A Family Gathering will be held on Saturday December, 29 2018 from 2:30-5:30 at the North GA Technical College in Blairsville, GA with Rev. Bobby Bone officiating. The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to any Parkinson Disease fund in Robert’s memory.

James Homer Thomasson: Obituary

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory announces Funeral Services for Mr. James Homer Thomasson, Husband, Father, and Grandfather who passed away on Monday, December 10th, 2018, at the age of 84. He was born on August 1, 1934, in Murphy, North Carolina. The son of the late James Garlin Thomasson and Flora Stephens Thomasson.

Homer joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) June 1, 1953, as a staff member assigned to the Personnel Section, in Washington, D.C. He graduated from John Marshall University and John Marshall Law School in 1962, with a degree in Law and was appointed to the FBI Academy in 1962. After completing the FBI Academy, he was assigned as an FBI Special Agent, in Springfield, IL; Danville, IL; Pittsburgh, PA; and as Senior Agent-in-Charge of the Huntington, WV office. He was transferred to his Office of Preference, Atlanta, GA, in 1976. Homer retired as Senior Resident Agent-in-Charge of the Gainesville, GA office in 1985.

After retirement from the FBI, he was employed as Officer of Credit Card Investigations for the National Bank of Georgia; subsequent employment by the Georgia Insurance Commissioners Office, where he assisted in establishing their Insurance Arson Fraud Investigations Division. He was later appointed Vice President, Wachovia Credit Card Investigation Division, Wachovia Bank, Atlanta, GA. After retirement from Wachovia, Homer moved back to his home town, Blairsville, where he was employed as Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office.

Homer was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Atlanta Chapter President in 1992. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Blairsville, where he served as Deacon and various Church committees.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn Jenkins Thomasson. Daughter, Cindy & her husband, Robert Shearin; granddaughter, Nicole. Daughter, Pamela & her husband, Hollis Townsend; grandsons, James and Joseph. Sister, Jo Jenkins, wife of the late Ed Jenkins; brother-in-law, Charles Jenkins & wife, Bonnie; brother-in-law, Tom Battle, husband of the late Ella Jenkins Battle; brother-in-law, Ken Jenkins; and sister-in-law, Patti Jenkins Chambers & husband, Bobby; as well as, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday, December 13th, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Dr. Fred Lodge, Dr. James Butts, Rev. Rick Jenkins, David Riser, Rev. Dick Stillwell and Stan Gunter speaking. Minister Ed Lawrie and Mrs. Jackie Hill will be in charge of the music. The body will lie instate at the church starting at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. The following gentlemen have been requested to serve as pallbearers: Stan Gunter, Jeff Langley, Jim Colwell, Bruce Alexander, Rob Chambers, and James Farris. Asked to serve as honorary escort is Joseph Farris, Hollis Townsend, and Robert Shearin. Graveside Masonic Rites will be conducted by Allegheny Masonic Lodge. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, and visitation will take place at Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, on Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Kenneth Dwayne Chastain

March 16, 1969 – December 10, 2018

Mr. Kenneth Dwayne Chastain age 49 of Lake Cove Lodge Rd. Blairsville passed away on Monday December 10, 2018 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Chastain was born on March 16, 1969 in Copperhill, TN., the son of Florine Watkins Chastain and the late David Lee Chastain. He was a lifelong resident of Union County. Kenneth loved fishing, hunting, being outdoors and anything to do with nature. He enjoyed watching his son run in Motor crosses. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. Kenneth was a member of Youngstown Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Chastain are his loving wife and best friend, Teresa Dyer Chastain of Blairsville,  his mother, Florine Chastain of Blairsville, one daughter, Laci Bigelow of MI., one son, Rayven Chastain, two stepsons and one daughter in law, Brandon and Tammy Hughes, Austin Rhodes all of Blairsville, one sister and brother in law, Sandra and Gary Wynn of Conyers, GA., five grandchildren, Stormi, Gabe, Tinleigh, Abel and Justin, three nephews, Adam, Garret and Toccoa Wynn, several aunts, uncles, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 12, 2018 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Hood and Rev. Dwayne Patterson officiating. Specail music will be presented by Jonathan Adams ad Joan Spiva. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Brandon Hughes, Austin Rhodes, Stevie Abercrombie, Gary Wynn, Adam Wynn and Marty Rhodes. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mike Roberson, Mark Dyer and Toccoa Wynn. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to help defray expenses in Kenneth’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9:00 pm.

Ms. Debra Boyle age 62 of Charlie Corn Drive Young Harris, GA passed away on Tuesday December 4, at her home. Ms. Boyle was born on January 28, 1956 in Tampa Florida to the late Carl Ayers Sr., and Mary Collins Ayers of Blairsville. Debra enjoyed gardening, reading and watching sports and her special friends in the neighborhood.

Surviving Ms. Boyle are  her mother, Mary Collins Ayers of Blairsville, one son, Brendan Boyle of Georgia, one daughter, Shauna Boyle Butrym of Georgia, two brothers Carl Ayers Jr. of Heflin AL, Robert and Libby Ayers of Blairsville, GA, and one sister Ruth Ayers of McDonough, GA, and many other friends and relatives also survive. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
