Mrs. Margie “Arlene” Ledford age 91 of Rocky Top Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Friday April 6, 2018 at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Ledford was born on June 17, 1926 in Blairsville, GA., the daughter of the late Reid Burnette and the late Tina Foster Burnette. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Arlene loved quilting, growing flowers and keeping her yard in immaculate shape. She enjoyed being outdoors. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Ledford in 1991 and a granddaughter, Tina Ledford. Arlene was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Ledford are one daughter and son in law, Frances and T.J. Plott of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Harold and Jody Ledford of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Dawn Wilson, Dana and Ricky Bridges, Gina and Jeremy Parks, Caitlin and Daniel Pruitt, twelve great grandchildren, Brianna and Callie Fortenberry, Katie and Natalie Wilson, Addison, Arthur, T.J. and Kayla Bridges and Lauryn Sumner, Zander Parks, Deacon and Dalton Pruitt, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday April 8, 2018 at 3:30 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Tony Black and Rev. Tommy Seay officiating. Special music will be presented by Martha Davenport and Becky Rogers. The following  gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Arthur Bridges, T.J. Bridges, Bruce Gray, Bobby Ledford, Chris Beaver and Fred Gray. Interment will follow in the Ivy Log Baptist Church cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband Floyd. Mr. Thomas (Tom) Marvin Garrison age 86 of Hiawassee, GA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in the North East GA Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Garrison was born on Dec. 4, 1931 in Birmingham, AL, the son of the late Thomas Garrison and the late Margaret Cagle Garrison. Tom was a veteran of the US Navy during the Korean War and served as a pilot. Tom started his military career in High School with the ROTC. He attended Auburn University and served as a Pilot with Eastern Airlines for over thirty two years. He was a member of Airline Pilots Association. He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture, sailing, riding motorcycles and camping. Mr. Garrison was a member of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris, GA.

Surviving Mr. Garrison are his loving wife and best friend, Joyce Garrison of Hiawassee, one daughter and son in law, Dawn Garrison and Scott Sweebe of Cody, WY, one son and daughter in law, Rusty and Sue Garrison of Monroe, GA, three grandchildren, Tressa and Patrick Hasty, Heather and Brandon Coker, Kaitlyn and Zach Horsley, four great grandchildren, Miriam Horsley, William Hasty, Lynly and Sabrina Coker, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Jack Moore, age 55, of Blairsville, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 6, 2018 at his home. Mr. Moore was born April 8, 1962 in Murphy, NC to the late Ralph and Ellen Bingham Moore. Jack was a proud father and grandfather. He was an outspoken man. You never had to wonder what Jack thought about a matter, he was an honest person. He was a hard worker and he enjoyed his work, but more than anything else, Jack loved his family. He was was always kind and good hearted….he had a heart of gold.

Survivors include: sons, Jason (Leeanna) Moore and Jeffrey (Brittanie) Moore, both of Blairsville, son, Matthew (Lauren) Moore of Murphy, NC, his companion, Jamie LeCroy of the home, step-daughters, Linzi Worley of Suches, GA and Ivy LeCroy of Blairsville, step-son, Eric LeCroy of Blairsville, Brother, Ben (Cindy) Moore and sister, Pat (Keith) Donaldson, both of Blairsville, lifelong friend, Sheila Martin of Murphy, and grandchildren, Gabbriella Moore, Annabelle Moore, Branson Moore, Carson Moore, Lawson Moore, Tanner Moore, Bentliey Worley, and Vernon Patterson.

Jerry Pope Poppell, 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior, after a lengthy battle with mesothelioma, on March 28, 2018 in Blairsville, Georgia, with his loving family by his side. Jerry was born March 3, 1939 in Perry, Florida to John Pope Poppell and Mary Elsie Godwin Poppell.

Jerry honorably served our country in the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis. Jerry was of the Primitive Baptist faith and was a member of Tucson Primitive Baptist Church in Tucson, Ariz. Jerry worked as an Aeronautical Engineer with Boeing for 21 years, as an engineer/scientist, retiring in 2007. Jerry was an inventor and worked for Automated Manufacturing Systems, Inc., and Carolina Button Company, and worked with Piper Aircraft for 13 years in both Vero Beach and Lakeland, Florida. He also worked with the Taylor County News Herald and O’Quinn’s Drug Store. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, flint knapping, photography, building working aircraft prototypes, and he enjoyed any challenge of a mechanical nature. He also enjoyed hiking and rappelling, and off roading.

Jerry was preceded in death by his son Brent Alan Poppell, and parents John Pope and Mary Elsie Poppell.

Jerry was the devoted and loving husband of Virginia Ruth Freeman Poppell for 58 years. He loved his children, daughter Sandra Poppell of Blairsville, Ga., and son Gary Poppell (Shannon) of Mesa, Ariz.; grandchildren, Craig Cunningham (Janell) and Megan Connor (Jon), Jeffrey, Kevin, and Allison Poppell; great grandchildren, Brent and Tyler Cunningham, and Mollie and Gabriel Connor; his siblings, Charles Poppell, Christine Thompson, Ralph Poppell, and Wanda Colson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Tommie Stanaland officiating. Interment services followed afterwards at Pisgah Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Burns Funeral Home of Perry.

Mary Margaret Turner, age 83 of Hiawassee, formerly of Blairsville passed away peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018 at North East GA Medical Center following an extended illness. Mary was born on December 7, 1934 in Topeka, KS. She was the daughter of the late Garnett Collins and the late Eunice Cary Collins. Mary graduated from Clayton State College with a degree in Aviation Administration. She then worked at Eastern Airlines and later as a Diplomat with the US State Department for over fifteen years. In addition to traveling the world, Mary wrote and published the book “God Doesn’t Need a Passport but the Rest of Us Do”.  She was a very loving mother, grandmother and friend to many. Mary was a faithful Christian and was a member of the Coosa United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mary are one daughter and son in law, Leslie and Richard Sale of Tybee Island, GA, one grandson, Manny Carucci of Tybee Island, GA, two nieces, Cynthia Collier and Cheryl Mitchell, both of Texas, an endless list of special friends, and a host of Mary’s church family.  Mary was also mother to the late Charles Mandell “Manny” Turner.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Roy Watkins officiating. Mrs. Wanda June Brown age 95 of Dean Gap Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday March 18, 2018 following an extended illness. Mrs. Brown was born on June 2, 1922 in Union County, the daughter of the late Bynum Walker and the late Laura Ellen Patterson Walker. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. She was a retiree from the State of Georgia with over twenty six years of service. She and her husband Jay owned and operated Bill’s Roller Rink for many years. June always was helping anyone who was in need. She loved her family and her church. She was preceded in death by her husband Annus Jay Brown in 1977, a brother, Scotty Walker and a sister, Mary Jo Daniel. June was a member of New Union Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Brown are two daughters and sons in law, Billie Sue and Jimmy Lunsford of Blairsville, Janice and Albert Norton of Blairsville, two sisters, Maxine Walker of Blairsville, Louise McAfee of Blairsville, three grandchildren, Travis and Sabrina Lunsford, Tracie and Jeff Shields, Ashley Norton, two great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Breanna Shields, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Lucille R. Brackett, age 91 of Blairsville, passed away Tuesday March 13, 2018 at Union County Nursing Home. Mrs. Brackett was born June 17, 1926 in Cowpens, SC to the late George and the late Emma Payne Sawyer. Lucille was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Truett Brackett, Brother, Frank Sawyer, and sisters, Emille Sawyer, Ruby Jones, and Pauline Wilson.

Mrs. Anna Mae Martin, age 85 of Blairsville, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018 at her home. Mrs. Martin was born March 17, 1933 in Blairsville, GA to the late Howard Christopher Atkins and the late Dessie Brackett Atkins. Ann was a lifelong resident of Union County and was of the Baptist Faith. She loved her Lord dearly, and was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement; and she was known dearly as a staunch prayer warrior. “Annie” was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a very proud and loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Ann had worked with United Community Bank for 26 years and retired as an Assistant Vice President. She was known by family, friends, and customers to love her collections, especially her rock and arrowhead collections. Anna Mae will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Almarie Hamby, Josephine Latham, and Mary Belle Atkins.

Mr. William Edward Cook Jr. age 61 of John Abernathy Road, Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday July 17, 2018. William was born on Jan. 26, 1957 to the late William and Mary Queen Cook in Duluth Ga.
Mr. Cook is survived by his loving wife,  Betty  Seabolt Cook, one daughter Connie Draughn, one son and daughter in law Curtis and Monica Cook. Two sisters and  brother’s  in law, Sandy and Bill Mason, Sheila and Gary Beavers, one brother and sister in law Jerry and Kaitlyn Cook, three grandchildren, Brandon Kaitlyn, and Bryon Draughn.

Ms. Regina W. Morgan of Blairsville formally of Chattanooga Tn. passed away at the Union County Nursing Home on Tuesday July 10, with her loving family by her side. Regina was born on August 17, 1943 to the late W.H. and Onnie Smith Henderson. Regina loved to read and watch TV in her younger days she was quite a Buck dancer and also enjoyed Square dancing. She is survived by one brother Randall Henderson of Young Harris, Ga.,Nieces and Nephews Yvonna Smith, Gail Weaver, Michael Bible, Angie Carter and Ricky Klassen. Visitation will be held on Wednesday July 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mountain View Funeral Home.

Mr. Jay” Troy” Wheeler age 71 of Bell Lane, Morganton passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday June 22, 2018 following an extended illness. Mr. Wheeler was born on July 14, 1946 in Blue Ridge, GA., the son of the late Sam Wheeler and the late Grace Rogers Wheeler. He was a lifelong resident of Union County. Troy was a veteran of the US Army of the Vietnam War. He loved riding horses and coon hunting in his spare time. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather.  Troy was a member of Young Cane Masonic Lodge #597 F&AM. Mr. Wheeler was a member of Liberty Hill Methodist Church.

Mr. Mel Ray Jones age 71 of Nottely Circle Blairsville passed away peacefully  at his home on Wednesday June 13, 2018 following a brief illness. Mr. Jones was born on May 1, 1947 in Eastman, GA., the son of the late Austin F. Jones and the late Rosa Lee Burnam Jones. He was a veteran of the US Air Force of the Vietnam War. Mel loved doing genealogy, tinkering in the garage and fishing. He was most proud of being a certified Girl Scout Leader. He was a loving and devoted husband, brother and grandfather. He cherished and loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mindy Jones in 2007, two brothers, Junior and Ronnie Jones and a sister, Alice Thomson. Mr. Jones was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Jones are his loving wife and best friend of fifty years, Susan Roberts Jones of Blairsville, his most cherished granddaughter, Lacy Dianne Jones of Blairsville, three brothers and two sisters in law, Jack and Frances Jones, Wayne and Pat Jones all of Dublin, GA., Danny Jones of Dublin, one sister, Debra Jones of Dublin, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Kenneth Hobert Collins age 86 of Bald Mtn. Creek Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home  surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness. Mr. Collins was born on January 4, 1932 in Blairsville, GA., the son of the late Thirston Collins and the late Juanita Scruggs Collins. He was a veteran of the US Army of the Korean War. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. He was a member of the VFW. Kenneth enjoyed Ham Radio’s. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Marlene Nelms, brother, Ted Collins , sister in law, Condice Collins and two nephews, Tim Cook and Corey Collins. Kenneth attended Old Liberty Baptist Church.
