Mrs. Mildred Hall age 96 of Gumlog Rd. Young Harris passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 8, 2018 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Hall was born on April 6, 1922 in Young Harris, GA., the daughter of the late Luther Brown and the late Lizzie Puett Brown. She was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County. Mildred’s interests included gardening, yard work, antiquing, and taking care of her pets. Wood carving and ceramics were also hobbies she pursued at an earlier age.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Charlie Hall in 1984, a son, Jerry Hall in 2009, a granddaughter, Chandra James in 2017, and two brothers, Bobby and Louis Brown. Mrs. Hall was a member of Old Brasstown Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Hall are her two daughters and sons in law, Mary and Lloyd Erwin of Cumming, GA., Peggy and Tony Bearden of Alpharetta, GA., two sons and daughters in law, Gerald and Carolyn Hall of Young Harris, Gary and Shirley Hall of Young Harris, eight grandchildren, Richie and Sylvia Erwin, Scotty and Angie Erwin, Nancy and Brent Bristow, Elizabeth and Kevin Hochstedler, Charlie and Shannon Hall, Tashina and Nathan Eller, Christopher and Kimberly Hall, Benjamin Hall and Lisa Bonham, nine great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 11, 2018 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel, with the Rev. Billy Stiles officiating. “By His Grace” will sing Mildred’s favorite songs. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Richie, Scotty and Jack Erwin, Charlie Hall, L.G. Hamilton and Ralph Grice. Interment will follow in the Old Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery where she will laid to rest next to her beloved husband Jack. Viewing and visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00-8:00 pm at Mountain View Funeral Home.

Mr. William Cecil Cheek age 79 of Booger Hollow Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully on Thursday May 3, 2018 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mr. Cheek was born on Feb. 3, 1939 in Hayesville, NC., the son of the late Charlie Cheek and the late Lena Ferguson Cheek. He was a veteran of the US Air Force. William was a lifelong resident of Union County. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and also a brother, Horace Cheek. Mr. Cheek was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Cheek are his loving wife Nedra Nedra Cheek of Blairsville, two daughters and son in law, Betty Ann and Gary Rogers of Blairsville, Sandra Lynn Watson of Hiawassee, two brother’s and sister’s in law, Herman and Lavada Cheek of Blairsville,and Jerry and Susie Cheek of Blairsville, one sister and brother in law, Shirley and Edward Mashburn of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Amanda Picklesimer, Tiffany Rogers, Andrew Watson, Jonathan Watson, 4 great grandchildren,, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 4, 2018 at 4:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Jerry Karnes and Rev. Scotty Jarrard officiating. Special music will be presented by the Praise team. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Bryan Mashburn, Tommy Green, Michael Hitzing, Ricky Rich, Roy Fortenberry and Rusty Fortenberry. Interment will follow in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Harmony Grove Church Cemetery Fund in memory of Mr. Cheek. Mrs. Robin Renee Underwood, age 51, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Robin was born on March 29, 1967 to Roy Underwood and the late April Jordan. She was a life-long resident of Union County. Robin enjoyed being in the outdoors and was a hairdresser by trade.
Robin is survived by her father, Roy Underwood of Young Harris, Georgia, one son Colby Collins of Portland, Oregon, and three daughters: Olivia Robinson of Canton, North Carolina, Carin Hatchett of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Jocelin Buckner of Hayesville, North Carolina. She also had one brother, Mark Underwood of Young Harris, Georgia and two sisters: Angela Via of Decatur, Georgia and Mandy Sherrell of Young Harris, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14th at 4:00pm at Meadow Grove Baptist Church in Hayesville, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Rock Bottom Recovery and Support of Hayesville, North Carolina.

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Oleta Hall Handy, age 91, of Young Harris, Georgia, who passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in Loganville, Georgia.
Mrs. Handy was born in Young Harris, Georgia, a daughter of the late Feman and Estie Ingram Hall. Mrs. Handy will be remembered for how she loved her husband and her family. She was the strength behind her husband, and her support was vital to his success. Mrs. Handy was an excellent seamstress, cook, and decorator, and was a former member of the Gainesville Homemakers Club. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. Her beloved husband Hubert William Handy; brother A.J. Hall; and sisters, Annette Puett and Monita Thomas, preceded her in death.
Surviving family members that are left to treasure the memory of Mrs. Handy include: daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dr. Russell Cain; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Michael Henderson, all of Young Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Stan Mays, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Marilyn Hall, of Hayesville, North Carolina; brother-in-law, J O Puett; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Handy, of Young Harris; two grandchildren: Joey (Pearl) Mays of Atlanta, and Andy Mays, also of Atlanta; a great granddaughter, Melody Chang Mays; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Handy officiating. The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers: Joey Mays, Andy Mays, Mylon Hall, David Hall, Dennis Handy, and Donn Handy. Burial will be in Cornerstone Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Jerry Carl Cothren age 70 of Sky View Drive Hiawassee passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday March 29, 2018 following an extended illness. Jerry was born on May 15, 1947 in Murphy, NC., the son of the late Cord Cothren and the late Hazel Henson Cothren. He was a lifelong resident of Towns County. Jerry was full of laughter, love, kindness and could always make people laugh. His favorite name for everyone was “Little Buddy”. He didn’t meet a stranger. He enjoyed cooking for family and neighbors, camping and being outdoors. He loved his family with all his heart. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce King, three brothers, Claude Cothren who passed away this year, Eldridge and Jack Cothren. Jerry was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Cothren are his former wife, Lorraine Cothren of Hiawassee, two step children, Freda and Buddy, four sisters and three brothers in law, Anna Brown, Florence and Wallace Shelton all of Blairsville, Aletta and Dale Woods of Hiawassee, Millie and Danny Arrowood of Blairsville, two brothers, Clifton Cothren of Young Harris, Ross Cothren of Winlock, WA., several step grandchildren and great children, many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Clark Moss and Rev. David Feathers officiating. Special music will be presented by SaraKate Odom. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Stanley Brown, David Green, Danny Arrowood, Mitchell Foster, Michael Thomas and Dale Woods. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Hayesville. Mrs. Black was born in Clear Field, Pennsylvania, a daughter of “Curly” and Ethel Lumadue. Mrs. Black had been preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William Henry Black.

Miss Catherine Smith Bray age 68 of Hayesville passed away peacefully on Sunday March 25, 2018 in the Union County Nursing Home. Miss Bray was born on Feb. 16, 1950 in Coral Gables, FL., the daughter of the late William Anderson Bray and the late Marian Smith Bell Bray. Catherine loved Elvis Presley, playing her guitar, going to the beach and watching surfers. Her favorite sitcom was “Happy Days”. She loved making people laugh and spending time with her family and friends. She was a true animal lover. She was a loving and caring daughter, sister and aunt. Catherine was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving Miss Bray are one sister and brother in law, Jan and William Rumfeldt of Miami, FL., niece, Jennifer and Adam Neiheisel of Coral Springs, FL., two great nephews, Dylan and Reece Neiheisel of Coral Springs, FL., many other relatives and friends also survive.

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Lila Jean Hunter Greene, age 75, of Braselton, Georgia, who passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mrs. Greene was a native of Blairsville, but had lived in Hall County, Georgia and Jackson County, Georgia for 30 years. She was a member of Union Baptist Church. Lila will be remembered for how she loved her children and grandchildren. She was a strong-willed woman, and taught her family how to be strong. Mrs. Greene had been preceded in death by her parents, William Buren Hunter and Phoebe Iowa Hood Hunter; her sisters: Bonnie Hunter and Lucille Thomas; and her brothers: Edward Hunter, Billy Hunter, and Jimmy Hunter.
Surviving family members left to carry on Lila’s legacy are: husband, Richard; son, Jeff Campbell and his wife Doris; daughters, Tonia Weaver and Angela Trout; four grandchildren: Matthew Weaver and his wife Tiffany, Caleb Weaver, Lacy Denton and her husband Austin, and Ashley Watkins and her husband Jeremy; four great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. Special music will be presented by granddaughter, Ashley Watkins. Mr. James Franklin Alexander age 72 of Leesburg, VA. Formerly of Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday March 4, 2018 in Leesburg following an extended illness. Mr. Alexander was born on March 8, 1945 in Atlanta, GA., the son of the late Hoyt Jessy Alexander and the late Ruby Dyer Alexander. He was a veteran of the US Army of the Vietnam War. James was a loving and caring husband, father, brother and grandfather. James was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Alexander are his loving wife and best friend of fifty years, Helen Alexander of Leesburg, VA., one son and daughter in law, Jessy and Fran Alexander of Leesburg, one brother and sister in law, Eddy and Sandy Alexander of Blairsville, one sister and brother in law, Bonnie and Gary York of Cleveland, GA., five grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Harold Otis Thomas age 79 of Gus Thomas Rd. Blairsville passed away on Sunday March 4, 2018 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Thomas was born on Fe 27, 1939 in Blairsville, GA., the son of the late Gus Thomas and the late Dollie Stephens Thomas. Harold worked for many years with the DNR. He enjoyed working on his farm and being outdoors. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his two canine companions, “Jack Jack” and “Cooper”. He was preceded in death by his parents and also four sisters, Viola Vandiver, Zelma McClure, Noreen Stover and Mae Bell McClure, two brothers, Cicero and Junior Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Thomas are his loving wife of fifty seven years, Evelyn Bridges Thomas of Blairsville, three daughters and sons in law, Vickie and Butch Gibson, Brenda and Wade Plott, Connie and Ronnie Garrett all of Blairsville, three sisters and one brother in law, Leona Harkins of Dahlonega, Edna and Charles Neal of Blairsville, Pauline Sosebee of Blairsville, six grandchildren, Joyce and Clinton Hall, Anjelica and Andrew Glass, Travis and Tina Plott, Tyler and Kayla Plott, Ryan Dana Garrett, Bridgett and T.J. Burgess, fourteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday March 7, 2018 at 6:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Garrett officiating. Special music will be presented by Junior and Carolyn Bridges and the Track Rock Quartet. Mrs. Lavada Louise Cheek age 62 of Corn Flower Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on Tuesday November 20, 2018 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Cheek was born on August 21, 1956 in Union County, the daughter of the late C.A. Holbrooks and the late Bertha Duckworth Holbrooks. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Lavada loved Gospel singing (She sang at many churches and for funerals), most of all she loved telling everyone that she met about Jesus, witnessing to them and the love that he had for them. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents and also two brothers, Calvin Holbrooks and Roy Edward Holbrooks and three sisters, Rita Faye Kelley, Eva Nell Smith and Barbara Ellen Holbrooks. Lavada was a member of the Day of Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving Lavada are her loving husband and best friend, Herman Cheek of Blairsville, five daughters, Amber Hernandez of Norcross, Tabitha Pacheco of Pasco, FL., Brittany Hunter, Jennifer Cascarano, Jamie George all of Blairsville, one son, Jonathan Hunter of Blairsville, three stepsons, Kevin Cheek of Blairsville, James and Gary Cheek of Hiram, GA., two brothers and one sister in law, Quinton and Wanda Holbrooks , Ted Holbrooks all of Blairsville, three sisters and two brothers in law, Phyllis and Melvin Fuller of Lawrenceville, Leona Hunter, Joyce and Herbert Teague all of Blairsville, seventeen grandchildren, one great grandchild, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Special music will be presented by Lee and Cathy Griggs. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Joe Teague, Luis Hernandez, Davis Posey, Destin Posey, Ricky Hughes and Wayne Hughes. Interment will follow in the Woods Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Obituaries October 3, 2018Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hensley, age 84, of Blairsville, GA, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2018.
A life long resident of Union County, Mrs. Hensley was born on February 24, 1934 to the late Edward & Nancy Harkins Payne. She loved her family and community, as well as, Fishing every chance she got. She also loved a good game of cards with family and friends. Mary goes on to be with her parents, Ed & Nancy Payne; Husband, Marcus Hensley; Daughter, Brenda Sue Gay; Sisters, Mattie Plott ( Tom), Bessie Gilreath ( Russell), Bertha Garner, Nora Evans, Martha Ross Hawkins (Jack) and Bonnie Payne; Brothers, Hobert Payne, Willie “Bill” Payne (Margaret) and J.P. Payne. She will be remembered by all who new her, but especially missed by her Grandson, Roy Johnson; Great-Grandsons, Johnathan Johnson and Michael Henderson; Sister, Grapell Rich; Son-in-law, Tom Gay; Sisters-in-law, Evelyn Payne and Martha Fortenberry and Brother-in-law, Joe Evans. Also sharing in her legacy and many nieces and nephews.

Nancy Lee Trant: Obituary

Mrs. Nancy Lee Trant, age 77 of Hiawassee Park formerly of Murphy, N.C., passed away peacefully on Sunday September 23, 2018, surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness. Mrs. Trant was born on November 9, 1940 in Flint, MI., the daughter of the late John Warner Brown and the late Marion Helen Lundsten Brown.
Mrs. Trant loved animals and served as the Executive Directive of the Humane Society in Sarasota, Florida. She was very involved in the Republican Party in Michigan and served as Genesee County Commissioner in Flint, Michigan from 1977 to 1983. Mrs. Trant was a delegate to the 1976 and 1980 Republican National Convention for Ronald Reagan. Mrs. Trant served as the Michigan Executive Director in 1984 for President Reagan’s re-election campaign. Her passion for liberty and the protection and adherence to our Constitution was a driving force in her life. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Trant in 2013, her parents and also a sister, Vivian DiPaolo. Nancy was of the Christian faith and looked forward to her Heavenly home with Jesus.
Surviving Mrs. Trant are two daughters and sons in law, Debbie and Gerry Shaw of Asheville, NC., Diana and Mark Donaldson of Grand Blanc, MI., one son, Dan Anderson of Reno, NV., one sister, Linda Headrick of Ft. Mills, SC., one brother, Warner Brown of Elmira, MI., ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held in November in Asheville, NC, time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Humane Society in memory of Mrs. Trant.

Laverne Nuthall: Obituary
Obituaries August 10, 2018
Mrs. Nuthall was born April 12, 1931, to the late Andrew & Thelma Balduff Lortcher in Oxford Township, Ohio. Laverne was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Alfred E. Nuthall, in March 2017.
Laverne, a loving & dedicated mother, was centered around her family. She taught her daughters and grandchildren how to cook & bake on a wood-burning stove, pick fresh blueberries used in turn for making preserves and blueberry pancakes, while summering at their cabin in Pointe-au-Baril, Ontario, Canada. Devoted to the Eastern Star, her daughters all became Rainbow Girls, while Laverne was a troop leader for their Girl Scouts of America troop. She also loved fishing and boating her whole life.
Surviving Mrs. Nuthall are three daughters and sons-in-law: Virgina & Philip Ross of Blue Ridge, GA; Kathleen & Robert McClain of Bonita Springs, FL; and Sallie & Rusty Crawford of Anthony, FL. Brothers and sisters Paul Lortcher of Ohio; Esther Strait of NC; Andrew Lortcher of NC; and sister Velda Eskins of Griffin, GA. Also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren: Robin H. Martinez, and Karl Crawford; six great-grandchildren Tyler Keelor, Brennan Keelor, Sophia Martinez, Liliana Martinez, and Brienna Martinez and Hailie McClain.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Union County Nursing Home for their activities fund. Mr. Sabin Wisson, age 83, of McDaniel Lane, Suches Ga. passed away on Wednesday , August 1, 2018 at Union General Hospital with his loving family by his side. Wes was born in Paris, France on January 9, 1935 to the late Albert Henry and Suzanne G. Wisson. Wes loved to go deep sea fishing, working in his wood working shop and especially shuttling hikers to and from the Appalachian Trail.
Mr. Wisson is survived by his wife, Dixie, two daughters and two son’s , Jacki and Doug Heaton of Brunswick Ga., Lewis and Faye Wisson of Dawsonville, Ga., Nancy and Peter Mondalek of Atlanta Ga., James and Kim Wisson of Hicksville, New York, also surviving are four grandchildren, Misty, Eric, Jena, Georgia and 3 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
