FYN Sports Games of the Year
Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports December 28, 2020
As our team has been doing some reflecting on this past football season for the GHSA, we have narrowed down our top 3 games of the year we covered in 2020.
- Fannin vs Pace Academy 1st round GHSA 2a playoffs
Fannin 28 Pace 21
This was the lone playoff matchup to make our list. Fannin played host to Pace Academy the Saturday after Thanksgiving, in a game that was close in its entirety. Both teams were tied at a touchdown a piece heading into the locker room, but coming out of the halftime gate Pace jumped out to a 21-7 lead, the largest deficit Fannin had seen all year. The resiliency of the Rebels paid off however, as they were able to put up 28 unanswered points and win the ball game 28-21.
- Union vs Fannin week 1
Fannin 24 Union 20
In the first game of the year for both the Panthers and the Rebels, we were able to watch an instant classic. This was perhaps the only game this year in which the Panthers were fully healthy, and they played up to their potential. There is a lot of history between these two teams and this game is tagged by the locals as the “Border War”. Fannin took a 17-14 lead into halftime thanks to a Jack Catner field goal. Logan Helcher was able to find paydirt late in the 3rd quarter however and give Union their first lead of the game. Fannin was able to answer with about 5 minutes left in the game, as Andre Bivens scored on a 25 yard TD pass from Luke Holloway. Union got the ball back and was putting together a good drive of their own until Cason Owensby intercepted a Panther pass attempt, sealing the game for the Rebels and kick starting their undefeated regular season run.
- Gilmer vs Union final week of regular season
Union 7 Gilmer 0
As you can tell by the final score, defense dominated this game. Union County was riddled with injuries offensively, but their defense was still able to stonewall the Gilmer Bobcats offense, not allowing them to score a single point. JJ Littles was able to pick off a pass for the Panthers in the second quarter, and their offense capitalized as Jonah Daniel punched in a TD for the only points in the ballgame. Unions Defense held on and they won the game on a single score.

Panthers softball keeps region pace with big win
Sports, TeamFYNSports, Union County High School August 29, 2019
Blairsville, Ga. – The Union County High varsity softball team’s offense exploded Thursday night, August 29, scoring 16 runs during the first three frames and earning the three-inning, mercy-rule win over region-foe Putnam, 16-0.
Already leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Panthers (6-6, 3-0 Region 8-AA) used great hitting to put six runs on the scoreboard in the inning and effectively put the game out of reach.
Megan Bright started the inning with a line-drive double to left field. She advanced to third base before scoring, both occurring on wild pitches.
The next batter, Caley Davis, walked and then stole second base, before Lexi Sisum drew a walk and Davis moved to third on a passed ball.

A tough single to shortstop from Miranda Lockaby scored Davis and moved Sisum to third.
Mary Wischmeyer followed with a single, also to shortstop, to drive Sisum in, move Lockaby to second, and push the score to 6-0.
Hannah Patton stepped to the plate and blew the game open with a powerful double to left field, scoring Lockaby and Wischmeyer and giving the Panthers an 8-0 lead.
Union continued to press the advantage, with Patton moving to third on a passed ball and then scoring when Trinity Queen rolled a groundball out to second base. The Panthers took a 9-0 lead and never looked back.
After another scoreless inning from the visiting Lady War Eagles in the top of the third, the Panthers scored another seven runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game by three-inning mercy rule.
Sisum and Lockaby both blasted doubles, while Patton, Queen, Krysten Hodges, Bright, and Davis each singled to put the mercy rule in reach. The offensive explosion gave the Panthers a 14-0 lead, with the game-ending runs on second and third with two outs.
On the first pitch of her second trip to the plate in the game, Aubrie Banton put a double into left field, scoring Hodges and Bright, and giving the Panthers a 16-0 lead and their third consecutive region win to start the 2019 season.
With the victory, Union County kept pace for the top spot in Region 8-AA with Banks County. The Lady Leopards (10-0, 3-0 Region 8-AA) defeated region opponent Oglethorpe County, 10-0, Thursday afternoon in Lexington to stay undefeated.
Union County next plays Lumpkin County (9-5, 5-1 Region 7-AAA), who won Thursday’s region game against Fannin County (1-12, 0-5), by a score of 12-2.
The Panthers will welcome the Lady Indians to Blairsville beginning at 5:55 p.m., Wednesday, September 4.
The game is also the annual “Pink Out” for cancer awareness with the junior varsity playing at 4 p.m.
Union County blasts East Hall, 49-8, to earn first regular-season win
Sports, TeamFYNSports, UCHS Football, Union County High School August 31, 2019
Rabbittown, Ga. – The Union County High football team scored early and often in a 49-8 route of Class AAA’s East Hall on Friday night to earn the first win of the 2019 campaign.
The Panthers (1-0) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, and the defense stifled the home-team Vikings, to put Union County up 21-0 heading into the second frame.
The first three touchdowns of the game came on the legs and hands of junior running back Jonah Daniel, who rushed for two scores and caught another during the first half.

Daniel finished the night with more than 200 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Pierson Allison also had a good night, running for a touchdown and throwing for another, as the Panthers scored three more times in the second half to earn the blowout victory.
Union County coach Brian Allison said after the game that he was pleased with the outcome, but that the team still had plenty to improve upon before next week’s game.
“Our effort was really good tonight, but we made a few mistakes here and there that we have to fix going forward,” Allison said. “Missing some blocks, we had a few penalties, stuff like that that we half to correct. But overall, I thought our effort was great and our execution was pretty good.”

While Daniel put up big numbers on the ground, Allison was quick to put a lot of praise on the offensive line.
“That’s a nice job up front,” Allison told his team after the game. “We blocked really well and did a good job.”
Daniel echoed his coach after the game, saying his teammates should receive most of the credit for his big night.
“We blocked well outside and inside and those guys are the reason I was able to run the ball so well,” Daniel said after the game.
The tone set early on didn’t abate as the Panthers continued to press the offensive advantage, scoring again in the second quarter and keeping East Hall out of the endzone to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
Union County started the game quickly. The team kicked off to open the game, but the Vikings muffed the kickoff catch and the Panthers recovered, setting up a first down on the East Hall 26-yard-line.
After a run from Daniel and two passes from Allison, the Panthers had their first opportunity to score from inches out with just 10:52 left in the first quarter.
Daniel punched the ball in for the score, and the Panthers took a lead they would never relinquish at 7-0.

After the Union County defense forced a turnover on downs, the offense went to work. A few tough runs from Daniel, and a complete pass from Allison to senior Sawyer Drake, gave the Panthers a first down on the East Hall 36-yard-line. One tough run from Daniel later, and the Panthers led 14-0 with 5:20 to go in the first quarter.
After the defense forced a punt on the ensuing drive, the Union County offense went back to work, marching quickly down the field before a 38-yard touchdown pass from Allison to Daniel put the team in front 21-0 with less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter.
The scoring didn’t let up from there, as Union County scored again in the second quarter while the defense continued to stifle the East Hall attack.
Union County scored twice more in the third, and once in the fourth, to earn the big win.
Union County hosts Towns County at 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 6, in Blairsville.

Rebels and Panthers Battle In JV Action
Business October 21, 2018
The Junior Varsity squads for the Union Panthers and the Fannin Rebels battled it out on the football field last Thursday at Fannin High School Stadium. As the sub-varsity schedule starts winding down these two teams came ready to play and do their best to earn a hard fought victory.
The captains come to the center of the field for the coin toss in which the Panthers won and chose to receive the football to start the second half. The Rebels took the ball to start the game. Both of the defenses started strong and kept the game scoreless late in the first quarter. With 3 minutes and 58
seconds in quarter the Rebels pushed a score across the goal line making the score 7-0. The Rebels forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession added 7 more with 3:13 on the clock. The start of the 2nd quarter saw the momentum change to the Panther side of the ball. The Union offense started firing on all cylinders to put up 14 points of their own. Back deep for the panthers was #7 who took a Rebel kick off 80 yards for a panthers score. As a receiver he also had an 88 yard catch and run for another 7 to bring the score at 14 a piece to end the first half of play.

With the choice by the Panthers to receive the ball in the second half the Rebels placed the ball on the tee. Catching everyone off guard, Fannin executed a perfect on side kick and recovered to take possession at the Panthers 48 yard line. The Panthers defense brought the Rebel drive to a quick halt and took over on downs switching the energy back to their side once again. The Rebels coaching staff took an opportunity to get the 8th grade squad in the game for some very valuable experience. These younger players played hard and competed to the level of the game. The Panthers were able to put up 2 touchdowns in the third quarter bringing the score to 28-14 over the Rebels. The game would end with that score in favor of the Panthers Junior Varsity. The Panthers had over 350 total yards to the Rebels 273 yards. Each team had several penalties called against them but played very well in an exciting game. Can’t wait to see these young athletes play at the varsity level for Union and Fannin in the coming years.

Bobcats Pounce Late; Fall to Panthers in Extra Innings
UCHS Baseball March 16, 2016
The Gilmer High School Bobcats fought and clawed for nine innings last night, but were unable to respond to a late Union County Panthers run and fell, 5-4.
Gilmer broke a 0-0 deadlock in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Noah Ralston drew a walk. Evan Frady was subbed in as a courtesy runner and he promptly stole second during the next at-bat to get into scoring position. Drew Healan took advantage by smacking a double to put the Cats out front, 1-0. After Chad Watkins drew a walk, Union starter Logan Mancuso recorded a strikeout to end the frame.
The Bobcats manufactured another run in the bottom of the fourth. Austin Daman drew a leadoff walk and later scored with two outs on a throwing error by the catcher. A popout kept GHS from inflicting more damage.
The Panthers woke up in the top of the fifth. Candler Colwell drew a leadoff walk, before a Crawford Colwell double put two Union runners on base with no outs. A fielding error during the next at-bat brought Candler Colwell home to score. Patrick Baggett then garnered an RBI with a sacrifice groundout to center, which scored Crawford Colwell and tied the game, 2-2.
Lance Rich reached on an error and Mancuso garnered an infield single, to load the bases. RJ Banton seized the moment by singling to score both courtesy runner Coleson Daniel and Mancuso, widening the Panthers lead to 4-2. Gilmer reliever Daman then induced a 6-4-3 double play to stop the bleeding.
Gilmer refused to go down without a fight, rallying to keep the game alive in the bottom of the seventh. Ralston was plunked by a pitch to start the frame. Later with one out, Watkins drew a walk. McKinley Chadwick then picked up an RBI with a flyout to left that scored Ralston, before Daman doubled to score Watkins and tie the game, 4-4. A strikeout then sent the game to extra innings.

The stalemate was broken in the top of the ninth. A one-out single from Rich was followed by a deep double from Mancuso, which allowed Rich to score and put the Panthers back out front, 5-4.
Although the Bobcats managed to load the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the ninth, a long flyout to left field squandered the comeback attempt and give Union the victory.
“In our non-region games, we’ve been trying to work some situations into the games,” Union head coach Robby Roxbury explained after the win. “We can grow from it, when the time comes, in the region. Our edge, when we got off the bus from traveling, was not very good. I take full responsibility for that. But I got on them a little bit to begin the fifth and they responded to it very well, by putting runs on the board and executing. It didn’t go exactly the way we planned, but we battled. We’re still growing. We’re still young in some areas. But our four seniors, they’re taking this leadership role and they’re building, helping them out and giving them confidence. I’m very impressed.”
Head Gilmer coach Jeff Thurman praised his players, despite the tough loss.
“We battled. We got ahead early, but had a bad inning, the fifth, defensively,” Thurman said. “But we battled back, tied it and still had chances to win it in the eighth and we remained very aggressive. It didn’t work out, but I told the guys, ‘You don’t give up. You’re working hard.’ These games are preseason games, for us. We’re 3-6 now, but we’re still 0-0 in the region. I think we’ll be ready for region. They’re playing hard for us.”
Gilmer travels to McCallie, Tenn. today, to take part in the 2016 Scenic City Classic.
