Back in ‘the Mike’ Friday evening, the Panthers were excited about one of the biggest games of the season! Not only was it a night to celebrate all of the Union County Hall of Famers, it was also a night to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness! With the Tigers being another region game, it was not to be taken lightly. With trash talking subsided, the Panthers and the Tigers took the field as the clock struck 7:30PM.
The UC captains were announced: #4 Kanon Hemphill, #8 Cole Wright, #11 RJ Banton and #52 Buddy Viera. Union lost the coin toss but received the ball at kickoff. As the Tigers lined up in an odd setup and fell inline to kick the ball, the Panthers returned it for two first-and-tens.
After one Tigers possession later, the Panthers received the ball again off a rugby style punt. #15 Cole Dockery found himself at the right place at the right time for an interception! He advanced the ball to the 12-yd line and then to the 3-yd line on a rush. Next play the Panthers score! With a swift fake rush to the left hand side, QB #8 Cole Wright found #21 Sawyer Drake wide open in the endzone for the first touchdown of the game! 7-0 Panthers with 3:06 left in the first quarter!
The Tigers battled back; with a 25-yd rush up the left side to end the first quarter. The Tigers attempt to score twice from the 4-yd line but then give up and decide to kick a field goal after being pushed back. 7-3 Panthers with 10:55 left in the second quarter.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Tigers were exceptionally good at passing the ball and at defense. They were able to score 7 additional touchdowns, making the score 52-7.
With pure determination, Panthers #8 Wright throws a 30-yd pass upfield to gain yardage. The next play they find themselves on the 7-yd line with a 1st-and-ten. #8 Wright finds #4 Kanon Hemphill just in time as he dives through the air in the back of the endzone to increase the score by 7. 52-14 Tigers with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter.
The final touchdown of the game was also made by the Panthers! Sophomore QB #17 Pierson Allison finds #21 Sawyer Drake open on the left hand side and Drake sprints upfield for a 48-yd touchdown!!
Final Score: 52 – 21 Tigers.
Up next, the Panthers face North Hall on the road. North Hall is currently ranked #3 in the 7-AAA Region! The Panthers are now 4-3 overall for the season and 0-3 for Region. We need your support Panther fans!

The Lady Panthers Varsity team seems to slowly be breaking out of their beginning season slump. With a 8-3 win yesterday against the Fannin County Rebels, the Panthers are now in the #4 spot in their 7-AAA Region.
Current Region Standings: 1) East Hall 5-0, 2) North Hall 3-1, 3) Lumpkin County 3-2, 4) Union County 2-2, 5) Greater Atlanta Christian 2-3, 6) Dawson County 1-3, & 7) Fannin County 0-5.
Panthers Pitcher #21 Jillian Lawn threw 7 innings; allotting for 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, 4 hits, and 3 errors.

Lawn shut the Rebels down in the second with a 1-2-3 inning.
Panthers with hot bats put up 1 more run in the bottom second. #27 Hannah Patton scored off an RBI SNG by #26 Maddie Sutton. Sutton is also ranked on the ‘RBI Stat Leaders’ board at #5. Other hits in the inning: #2 Miranda Lockaby (SNG) & #8 Katelyn Hodges (SNG).

A SNG by #11 Aladriel Arnold put her in position to score and that’s just what she did when #14 Mary Wischmeyer hit an RBI SNG in the bottom of the fourth. A hard DBL down the third base sideline by #26 Maddie Sutton put herself in a good position when #00 Bailey Rayfield came to the plate. Rayfield with an RBI SNG to left field allowed Sutton to score, giving the Panthers a 5-2 lead.
Panthers defense with one late throw and an error later increased the score once again. This would be the last run the Rebels would score for the game. T5: 5-3 Panthers.
In the home stretch, the Panthers were explosive with consecutive hits! #00 Rayfield started it off with a hard SNG to left-center. Next, a hard DBL by #21 Jillian Lawn, an RBI line drive SNG by #11 Arnold, a RBI SNG by #18 Aubree Pack & to end the inning a hard DBL to left-center by #14 Wischmeyer!!!

Garrison broke her arm last Thursday during warmups, had surgery Friday morning & was able to get her cast removed yesterday! Please continue to keep her and her family in your thoughts & prayers as we hope she makes a speedy recovery! She’s one tough cookie & a sweetheart for attending games to cheer on her teammates.

The Lady Panthers hosted the Hayesville Yellow Jackets yesterday evening for their fourth matchup of their inaugural season! Although the Panthers didn’t bring home a W, they put up a solid effort and have shown continuous progress thus far. With enough athletes wanting to be apart of this special season, the Panthers have a total of 3 teams: C, JV & Varsity!

Local District Attorney Jeff Langley is hosting a lunch event on Sunday May 21st at G and G Café on Highway 515. The District Attorney will be available from 12-2pm to discuss issues and answer questions from those attending. Also attending will be State Senator Hunter Hill. Senator Hill is a candidate for Governor in 2018. Italian food, salads and deserts will be served. The luncheon supports Jeff Langley’s re-election as District Attorney. Jeffrey Dean Cowen still at-large

Jeffrey Dean Cowan, age 56, is still at-large and thought to have fled to Towns or White County. Lt. Daren Osborn, of the Union County Sheriff’s Department, said Cowan was released on bond to Buck Dills, his bail bondsman, on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at about 2:30 p.m. Cowan told Dills that he needed to meet with his wife at the Dollar General Store at Booger Hollow to get the money to pay his bond fee. Dills drove Cowan to the Dollar General Store where Cowan left Dills waiting in his car and went into the store. Cowan stole a kitchen knife in the store and used it to threaten the clerk into giving him her car keys. Cowan then went out to the clerk’s car and started it, then left that car and went over to Dills car where he proceeded to stab Dills with the kitchen knife. Cowan then fled the scene in the clerk’s car, an orange 2007 Honda Fit, Georgia tag PLU 4697, and drove south on GA Hwy 129. Cowan had been incarcerated since April 10, 2017 on a charge of theft by taking, so he was not thought to be high on any drugs or alcohol at the time of this incident, said Osborn.
Cowan is now wanted by the Union County Sheriff’s Department on two counts of Aggravated Assault, and one count each of False Imprisonment, Possession of a Knife or Firearm During Commission of a Crime, Terroristic Threats, Armed Robbery and Theft by Taking.
Cowan’s whereabouts are not known at this time. Cowan is considered to armed and dangerous. Anyone having knowledge of his whereabouts is urged to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 439-6066.
UPDATE 2:14 p.m Thursday, April 27, 2017: Lt. Daren Osborn has contacted FetchYourNews.com and reported that Jeffrey Dean Cowan was apprehended in Illinois and is in custody. The stolen vehicle was apprehended with him. UCSO is in the process of extraditing him back to GA.
UCHS Receives STEM Certification

Blairsville, Ga – Union County High School (UCHS) named the fourth STEM certified public school in the state.
State Superintendent Richard Woods visited UCHS a few weeks ago and recognized the school as the 14th STEM certified program in the state and fourth public school to earn the honor.
STEM teaches students computational thinking and using scientific methods to solve real-world problems. It helps children to develop technological skills that they can use to one day find highly-sought after jobs.
At the May Board of Education, Superintendent John Hill presented the STEM certification award to Ms. Alecia Frizzell.
“Ms. Frizzell was extremely dedicated and instrumental in the high school receiving the certification, and it’s going to have a lasting impact on students of our county,” said Hill.
Ms. Frizzell also received the Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year 2019.
“I have not met a teacher more dedicated to her students and her profession,” said Hill, “we’re very proud of her.”
“I had no idea I was getting the award. I think I was nominated by Mr. Hussion,” explained Frizzell, “I had a student write a recommendation letter that is framed and on a wall in my house.”
Three Partners in Education were recognized for their significant efforts to improve the schools’ facilities and life of the students.

“I’m thankful that the school system accepted the schoolhouse in memory of Louise,” said Sprayberry, “She would be so thrilled to see that it was doing some good, and students might take up her passion. She loved it.”
This year the Chamber of Commerce had an entire night dedicated to recognizing Union County Schools’(UCS) students and set up two committees devoted to finding ways to help students.
“Our local chamber has always supported our school system, but this past year they have truly been a partner in education,” said Assistant Superintendent David Murphy.
“We appreciate the opportunity for the chamber to participate in the program,” said Chamber of Commerce President Steve Rowe, “These students are the future of Union County.”
RC&D Council sponsored a number of learning opportunities for the students of UCS and Woody Gap, including sponsoring a steer for middle school agriculture day, a pig for the cafeterias, fire-wise programs, a high-wind tunnel, drone software, wick-whacking device, and a number of the members.
Jason Moore’s recognized for his outstanding service on the middle school governance team.
UCMS Principal Gwen Stafford recognized student Jason Moore for his commitment to the School Governance Team.
“Jason Moore has been our representative at the middle school for the past two years, and he has done an outstanding job, said Principal Gwen Stafford, “If he doesn’t know what the students would like, he goes out and sees them. He gets there opinion and comes back and reports to us.”
UCHS FFA Students also received recognition for winning first place in state competitions.
Isaac Hunter placed first at the state level for the ocular estimation event at the junior foresters’ field day.
“Ocular estimation is where I have to stand five feet away from the tree and guess the diameter of it,” said Hunter. He can’t use any tools to assist with the process, just his best sight guestimation.
Isaac Hunter and Timothy Dye both won first place in the state FFA competition.
Next, Timothy Dye won first place at the state competition for timber cruising for board volume.
“You have to stand 66 feet away from the tree using logger tape, diameter tape, and clinometer. The diameter get the actual diameter of it, and with the clinometer, you get the height of it,” explained Dye.
The Union County Primary School recognized two teachers who achieved perfect attendance for the 2018-2019 school year. Kelsey Miller teaches Pre-K, and Tina Payne is an RTI specialist who teaches Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students.
UCPS Principal Millie Owenby recognized the two primary school teachers Kelsey Miller and Tina Payne for their perfect attendance.
“We all know that as teachers that the more we are there, the better the students perform,” said Principal Millie Owenby, “Sometimes at the primary school that is quite an accomplishment.”
The board also presented Superintendent with an award to commemorate his 15 years of service.
Missing Child Found Safe

Blairsville, Ga – Missing 5-year-old autistic child found by neighbor and deputy at 7:07 p.m. in a wooded area near Hwy. 180.
“A nearby neighbor and Deputy Josh Bridges found Brett in a wooded area near the house almost simultaneously,” stated Deputy Daren Osborne, “Once found, he was taken to be examined by medical services and his parents were notified.”
Union County Sheriff’s Office led an exhaustive search for the little boy, who wandered away from home sometime between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Brett was last seen asleep in his bed by his father when he left for work. The boy’s mother went to look in on Brett at 11 a.m., and the child had disappeared.
Brett normally sleeps for two hours at a time and then wakes up because autistic children commonly experience chronic sleep problems.
The parents conducted a search of their own before calling the authorities at 1:18 p.m. Upon arrival, Deputies thoroughly searched the house. After, they set up a command center on Hwy. 180 and started canvassing the surrounding area.
Deputies combed 180 for the boy.
The Sheriff’s Office also contacted A Child Missing Foundation immediately after the report came in, and the organization started calling neighbors to ask if they had seen Brett and to search around their homes.
Union County School Board alerted the community with a robocall.
“People also called wanting to volunteer, but we wanted our specialized units to have the first look through the area,” said Osborne.
K-9 Units from Union County Schools Police Department and Woodstock Police Department explored the area. The dogs did hit a track close to a pond. Towns County and Georgia State Patrol (GSP) dive teams were then called, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GDNR) lent their sonar unit to check the pond.
Ground search teams included Union County Fire and Rescue, Union County EMA, Blairsville Police Department, Union County EMS, GSP, GDNR, Georgia Department of Community Supervision, GEMA, Woodstock Police Department, Union County High School Police Department, Towns County EMA, and a few volunteers.
GSP also furnished air support with their air patrol helicopter.
Officers patrolled the roads and searched the woods for Brett.
“We want to thank everybody that came and assisted with the search. Everyone knew exactly what to do and were very professional during the entire search. We greatly appreciate all the help,” expressed Osborne.
No foul play is suspected in this case just a scary incident for the family and the community. The parents will not be charged with anything.
