Mr. James William Gregory Leheup age 64 of Morganton, GA., formerly of Orlando, FL. passed away peacefully at his home on Friday May 31, 2019 following an extended illness. Mr. Leheup was born on June 18, 1954 in Orlando, FL., the son of the late Eldred Delmer Leheup and the late Betty Pearl Paul Leheup. James was a computer enthusiast . He also enjoyed cars, car racing and motorcycles. He was a loving brother and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents and also two sisters, Betty Jean Thornton and Dorothy Ellen Shedd. Mr. Leheup was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Leheup are four sisters and one brother in law, Janet Hull, Della D. Frye, Nancy and Harold Johnson, Linda S. Sprenkle all of Orlando, two brothers, Eldred Leheup of CA., and Jack Leheup of Orlando, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
No services are planned at this time. Interment will follow at a later date from the Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, FL. where he will rest next to his parents. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Church On The Drive, 1914 Edgewater Drive Orlando, FL. 32804 in memory of James.

Mrs. Kathleen Smith Burke, age 68, of Burkensmyth Lane, Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Burke was born on October 17, 1950 in Sanford, Florida, the daughter of the late Richard Smith and the late Doris Howe Smith. Kathleen had made her home in Blairsville for the past eighteen years, moving here from Fruitland Park, Florida. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and painting. She was a loving and caring wife, mother sister, and grandmother. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Surviving Mrs. Burke are her loving husband and best friend of forty-four years, Dalton L. Burke of Blairsville, one son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Allie Burke of Maitland, Florida, one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Frankie Kimberlin of Front Royal, Virginia; four brothers, Michael Smith of Blairsville, Steve Smyth of Blairsville, Daniel Smith of Robbins, Tennessee, and Greg Smith of DeBary, Florida; six sisters, Betty Sue Senger of Auburn, Alabama, Peggy Monfort of Eugene, Oregon, Sister Mary Joan Smith of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Nita Cadden and Julie Roach of Maitland, Florida and the late Patricia Vanzura of Blairsville; six grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday June 5, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Deacon Larry Casey officiating and will be announced. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Union County Humane Society in memory of Mrs. Burke.

Mrs. Vera Naomi Azzarello age 90 of Trackrock, Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday May 25, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Azzarello was born on May 21, 1929 in Creighton, PA., the daughter of the late James P. Gay and the late Ivy Lee Gay. Before her retirement she served as Vice President for Chase Bank for over thirty years. One of her hobbies was knitting sweaters for different charities, she also enjoyed reading and gardening in her spare time. She loved her Lord and loved going to her church. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Vera attended Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Azzarello are one son and daughter in law, Charlie and Lisa Azzarello of Blairsville, two brothers, James P. Gay of Trentum, PA., Bill Gay of Jacksonville, FL., one sister, Allene Hanz of Springdale, PA., two grandchildren, Robert Azzarello and Debbie Brendley, four great grandchildren, Brooke, Kate, Lauren and Matthew, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Jimmy “Puddin” Dean Hardin age 60 of State Hwy 325 Blairsville passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday May 16, 2019 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Hardin was born on September 8, 1958 in Andrews, NC., the son of the late Harold Hardin and the late Maxine Day Hardin. Puddin had lived in Union County for the past forty years. He loved fishing, camping, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving husband, brother and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents and also three brothers, Ray, Clay and Mike Hardin and a sister, Missy Hardin. Mr. Hardin was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Hardin are his loving wife and best friend of thirty eight years, Sandra Thornton Hardin of Blairsville, one sister, Barbara “Bob” Hardin of Andrews, NC., sister in law, Cathy Rogers of VA., two brothers in law, Eddie and Sheila Thornton, Don and Mary Thornton, nieces, Amanda Gentle, Shiloah Hardin, Brittany Thornton, Nichole Williams, Kristy Lowe, Shana Kuykendall, Shanowa Kuykendall, nephews, John Anderson, Jason Anderson, A.J. Thornton, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Family left behind to cherish his memory are: daughters, Suzette Thomas (Jimmy Price) of Chatsworth, GA and Charlotte Ward and James Fowler of Dalton, GA; son, David Hedgecock (Amy Payne) of Dalton, GA; siblings, Virginia (Lawrence) Beaver, Frances (John) Foster, Richard Hedgecock, and Peggy Mashburn all of Blairsville; and his children’s mother, Corine Douthitt of Dalton, GA. Also, sharing in his legacy are 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Laban & Ivalee (Ledford) Hedgecock; daughter, Rosette Hedgecock; and sister, JoAnn Hedgecock.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Mr. David Anthony Reusing age 64 of Eagle Drive Blairsville passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Tuesday March 5, 2019 in the North East GA Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Reusing was born on December 14, 1954 in Bellevue, KY., the son of the late Leonard Reusing and the late Jane Steinmetz Reusing. David was a veteran of the US Navy of the Vietnam War where he served on the Midway Aircraft Carrier. He retired from Kroger after over thirty years of service. At the time of his death he was employed with Ingles. David was an animal enthusiast and loved all animals. He was co-owner of Essence of Rose in Blairsville where he served as Graphic Designer, Marketing Strategist and Display Engineer. He was a loving and caring husband, father, brother and grandfather. David was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving Mr. Reusing are his loving wife and best friend, Glenna Kinman Rose of Blairsville, five children, Daniele, Lesley, Hillarey and Kelly all of Kentucky and Richard of Tennessee, one brother, Terry Reusing of KY., twelve grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Linda Sue Thomas, age 72 of James Henderson Rd, Young Harris passed away on Monday February 25, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness. Mrs. Thomas was born on December 6, 1946 in Copperhill, TN to the late John McDougal and the late Anna Hall McDougal. Linda was a resident of Young Harris for the past ten years. She always enjoyed taking care of others, loved working in her yard; especially planting her flowers. She was preceded in death by her parents and also five brothers,Bo, Johnny, Butch, James and Rodney McDougal. Linda was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Thomas are one brother, Richard McDougal of Blairsville, one sister, Becky Lockaby of Hayesville, one nephew, Ron Ledford of Blairsville, one niece, Barbie Garrett of Hiawassee, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Brenda Ann Herison age 57 of Honaker Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home on Friday February 8, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Herison was born on October 24, 1961 in Green Bay, WI., the daughter of the late Robert Francis Biemeret and the late Judith Ann Guilette Biemeret. Brenda always loved helping those in need and was always volunteering at her church and the food pantry. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Herison in June 2018. Brenda attended the House of Prayer Church.
Surviving Mrs. Herison are four children, Billie Jo Byng of Milwaukee, WI., Nathaniel Byng of Green Bay, WI., Jennifer Brown of Blairsville, Robert Miller of Blairsville, two sisters, Sherri Biemeret, Vicki Schulke both of Green Bay, three brothers, John Biemeret, Robert Biemeret and Gary Schulke all of Green Bay, twelve grandchildren, Marcus Witcher, Grace, Jayden, Layla, Kase, Kolten, Chance and Country Byng, Noah, Wyatt and Amara Dunkle and Strauss Miller, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Edith Jacobs Davis, 92, formerly of Greenville, SC and Charlotte, NC, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Brasstown Manor in Hiawassee, GA. Born September 1, 1926, in Elm City, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Ansel Jacobs and Mildred Oxendine Jacobs. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Romeo Davis. She retired from Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. Edith was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Greenville, SC.
Survivors include her sons, Lindsey Davis (Susan) of Blairsville, GA and Marc Davis (Sandy) of Canton, GA; four grandchildren, Nicole Davis Sheffield (Max) of Cumming, GA, Justin Davis (Meredith) of Niceville, FL, Christian Davis (Sara) of Atlanta, GA, and Rachel Davis of Woodstock, GA; four great-grandchildren, Kaylin and Jameson Sheffield of Cumming, GA, and Amelia and Nora Davis of Niceville, FL; sister and brothers, Ellen Joyce Jacobs Hunt, James “Jim” Jacobs (Brenda) and Ronald “Ron” Jacobs (Cecy), all of Spartanburg, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Audrey Jacobs Snipes.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, February 2, 2019, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by The Rev. Mike Hammett.

Weather Summary for 2018

Back in December and already this year there’s been a lot of talk about how wet it’s been in the last year and while I agree with the comments I’ve been getting, I thought I’d do a little investigating and use facts to report on the weather of 2018. My data is coming from the UGA AEMN area weather stations.
The Automated Environmental Monitoring Network (AEMN) in Georgia was established in 1991 by the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The objective of the AEMN is to collect reliable weather information for agricultural and environmental applications. Each station monitors air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, soil temperature at 2, 4, and 8 inch depths, atmospheric pressure, and soil moisture every 1 second. Data are summarized at 15 minute intervals and at midnight a daily summary is calculated. A microcomputer at the Georgia Experiment Station initiates telephone calls to each station periodically and downloads the recorded data. The data are processed immediately and disseminated via the internet at www.weather.uga.edu.
We are fortunate to have three reporting stations in our area. They are Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay, Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge and the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center in Blairsville. For the purpose of this article, data has been averaged, but you can visit the web site and get more details and up to the minute weather.
Since rain has been the topic of conversation lately, let’s look at that first. In Blairsville, the total rainfall for 2018 was 76.01 inches and there were 164 rainy days. In Blue Ridge, the rainfall was 74.89 inches and 185 rainy days. In Ellijay there was 79.12 inches of rain and 168 rainy days. The average for our area is around 62 inches, but the statistic that stands out is the number of rainy days. During rainy days the plants did not receive good sunlight and that affects plant growth.
In looking at the month of December in 2018 Blairsville received 10.96 inches of rain and 17 rainy days. Blue Ridge received 11.21 inches of rain and 17 rainy days. Ellijay received 10.92 inches of rain and 17 rainy days. This may seem like a lot of rain, but back in 2015 Blairsville got 13.35 inches of rain with 13 rainy days. Blue Ridge got 16.57 inches of rain with 16 rainy days. Ellijay got 16.04 inches of rain with 17 rainy days. 2015 was not that long ago, but it seems we have gotten more rain lately. It might be the number of rainy days that is making us think we are getting more rain that we actually are getting.
As for temperatures the average maximum temperature in Blairsville was 68.53 and the minimum was 47.26. The overall average was 57.23 which is about normal, but the number of days below 32 was 761 which is up from before, but below 2015. In Blue Ridge the average maximum temperature was 68.12 and the minimum was 48.46 and the overall average was 57.59, which is also about normal. The number of days below 32 was 699 which is up from before, but also below 2015. In Ellijay the average maximum temperature was 69.17 and the minimum was 48.81 with an overall average of 58.48 which is about normal. The number of days below 32 was 625 which is above earlier years except for 2015.
In conclusion the UGA weather stations are a great resource for information that provide facts about our weather conditions and now when people ask if it’s ever been this wet, you have the facts to say yes. Mrs. Cynthia Golsby Guffey age 67 of East Lake View Drive Hayesville passed away peacefully on Monday January 21, 2019 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital following an brief illness. Mrs. Guffey was born on August 23, 1951 in Winnsboro, LA., the daughter of the late Leslie Eli Golsby and the late Dorothy Marion Parker Golsby.Cynthia’s passion was sewing and designing. She was an artist with a piece of fabric. She was a loving sister and aunt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Guffey in 2014, her parents and also a brother Robert Harold Golsby. Cynthia was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Hayesville.
Surviving Mrs. Guffey are two sisters and one brother in law, Harriet Trussell of Shreveport, LA., Connie and Laney Pankey of Delhi, LA., nieces, Lanya Bernard, Heather Golsby, nephews, William (Anita) Pankey, Kevin Pankey, Christopher (Susan) Knight, Caleb Trussell, a host of her church family, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday January 25, 2019 at 11:00 am from the New Life Baptist Church in Hayesville with Rev. Greg Carroll officiating. Special music will be presented by Chanda Wadsworth and Jackie Reed . The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Wendall Farmer, Chandler Farmer, Nash Farmer, Jake Carroll, Jimmy O’Dell and Richard Walker . Interment will follow in the Laurel Hill Memory Gardens Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband, Wayne. The family will meet with friends at the New Life Baptist Church on Friday from 10-11:00 am.

Mrs. Ruth Elaine Stefko, age 76, of Harlon Mason Drive, Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home on Friday January 18, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Stefko was born on July 20, 1942 in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of the late Victor Dale Loertscher and the late Nellie Gene Cooper Loertscher. She was a Registered Nurse for many years before her retirement. Ruth loved people and was always selfless and devoted to her patients, family, and to her Lord. She will always be remembered as a prayer warrior. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband Alexander John Stefko and a son Michael Alexander Stefko. Ruth was actively involved in Stephen Ministries. Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blairsville.
Surviving Mrs. Stefko are two daughters, one son, and one son-in-law: Dawn and Dempsy Chappell of Stone Mtn, Georgia, Robin Reynolds of Libertyville, Illinois, and Mark Stefko of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida. She is also survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Sonny Knapp, one brother and sister-in-law, David and Susan Loertscher all of Toledo, Ohio, five grandchildren, Christopher and Maura (wife) Stefko, Melissa Stefko, Drew and Jessie (wife) Chappell, Tyler Holcomb, Nicholas Vuich, two great-grandchildren, Waylon and Wesley Chappell, several nieces, nephews, a host of her church family, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Wilma was born on December 16, 1919 in Carroll County, GA. to the late H.H. and Ada Eugenia (Gena) Lovvorn Kemp. She was married to the late Richard D. Beck, Sr. and was long time member of Cedarcrest Community Church in LaGrange, GA.
Mrs. Beck is survived by her son, Doug Beck (Kathy) of Blue Ridge, GA., grandson, Joel Beck (Jenny) and great- grandchildren, Zack and Anna all of Lawrenceville, GA; grandson, Kyle Ray (Melissa) and great grandchildren, Lauren, Houston and Keaton of Charlotte, NC., brother, H.J. Kemp of Ranburne, AL and other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
There will be a graveside service to be held on Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 1:00 pm from the Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange, GA. In lieu of flowers if you wish, donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Wilma Beck to Cedarcrest Community Church, 2380 Roanoke Rd. LaGrange, GA. 30240. The family will meet with friends following the services at the cemetery.
