The Lady Panthers tipped off at 7 following senior night at 6. The Lady Panthers had 2 seniors, Bailey Daniel and Grace Wischmeyer. Wischmeyer was limited to playing time this season due to a knee injury.
The Lady Panthers faced off against the Lady Tigers from Dawson County. The Lady Panthers fell to the Lady Tigers earlier in the season 54-42. The Lady Panthers looked to secure a spot in the playoffs with a win.
Mccarter led UC with 4 of the 9 points scored in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers trailed 11-9 after Q1.
The Lady Tigers used a 12-4 run to open Q2 to extend the halftime lead 32-21. Ade. Dockrey led the Lady Panthers with 4 points. The Lady Tigers also used a 9-1 run the close Q2.
The Lady Panthers fell behind majorly in the first half due to poor free throw shooting. The Lady Panthers shot only 35% from the line 6-17.
The Lady Tigers separates themselves over the course of Q3 with a score of 54-31. Hill led Lady Panthers scorers with 4.
The Lady Panthers fell 70-38 to the Lady Tigers. Sticker led the Lady Tigers with 25. Mccarter led the Lady Panthers with 8.
The Lady Panthers finish the 15-9 in the regular season. The Lady Panthers next game will be Wednesday Feb 7th, at East Hall facing off against Dawson in the first game of the region tournament.
The Panthers followed tipping off at 8:30.
The Panthers had several seniors, twins, Candler and Crawford Colwell, RJ Banton, Cole Davis, Timothy Patrick, and Patrick Baggett.
Cra. Colwell was only 6 points away from hitting his 1000th point. The Panthers trailed early 13-9 at the end of Q1 as they were led by Baggett who had 4.
The Panthers trailed 31-34 at the half. UC was led by Allison who has 3. Cra. Colwell with 1:38 left to play in Q2.
The Tigers used a 8-0 run to open Q3 as they led 45-34. DC was led by Reed with 5 and The Panthers were led by Davis with 4.
The Panthers would fall to the Tigers for the second time this season 59-47. The Panthers fall to 16-8. UC wad led by Baggett with 17. The Panthers will play @ East Hall Feb. 6th, I. The opening round of the region tournament. The Panthers will play North Hall.

Union General talks parking expansion during monthly board meeting

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. – Chief Executive Officer of Union General Hospital Lewis Kelley recommended to the hospital’s Board of Directors at their monthly meeting Tuesday, Nov. 28, to proceed with plans to expand parking at its Blairsville facility.
Kelley explained the hospital owns a forested strip of a land adjacent to Union General that, if cleared, would allow for approximately 50 more parking spaces. The lot, located just across Deep South Farm Road, would be used for employee parking and would make available more spaces in its main lot for patients and visitors to the hospital.
“We’re in desperate need of parking,” Kelley told the board. “If you come over here on some of our days, every piece of parking we have is full.”
Kelley stated about 50 trees would need to be cut and cleared, and the bid cost for site development is approximately $49,600. The CEO further explained paving for the lot would not be able to completed until spring; however, prior to the paving, the lot could be graveled to allow for sooner use. Kelley also stated the hospital would speak with Union County Sole Commissioner Lamar Paris about the possibility of adding a crosswalk with a caution light to provide employees safe crossing from the lot.
Though the amount for the project is under Kelley’s $50,000 spending limit, the CEO asked the board to approve the expenditure, which was approved unanimously.
Kelley also brought to the board’s attention the need to replace a piece of ear nose and throat (ENT) equipment for the operating room that failed two weeks prior to the meeting. According to Kelley, hospital officials are evaluating the situation and taking bids to replace the equipment. The equipment, Kelley stated, would cost between $190,000 to $225,000. Currently, the hospital is using a piece of equipment on loan from a private company until a permanent replacement can be attained, according to Kelley.
Also during the meeting, Julia Barnett, chief nursing officer for Union General, announced the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) gave the hospital a five-star rating for the quarter in its latest quality measures rating. “I just want you all to understand how hard that all of our folks have worked to get to a five-star rating,” Barnett said.
In addition, Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee received a four-star rating from CMS.
The board also approved the hospital’s updated Organizational Plan for Patient Care Services, which, according to Barnett, is a CMS required document that outlines and explains all of Union General’s patient services and is updated annually.
Chief Financial Officer Nick Townsend delivered the monthly financial statement and reported Union General has netted $2.5 million this fiscal year to date in comparison to $3.6 million this time last fiscal year. Rising healthcare and health insurance costs across the industry, Townsend stated, are contributing factors to the decrease.
Townsend also reported Union General received $74,000 from the Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit while Chatuge Regional received $17,000 from the tax credit. As for the hospital’s clinics, Townsend stated, “Overall visits continue to trend upward each month.”
Michael Gay, chief operating officer, presented a construction update for the hospital’s orthopedic wing expansion stating the demolition phase has been completed and walls have been constructed in the wing. Gay estimated a completion date of February 2018 for the construction.

Wastewater Plant Starts Processing Landfill Runoff

Blairsville, Ga – Blairsville’s Wastewater (WWTP) plant to begin processing leachate from local landfills after City Council approves a partnership with The Water Authority (TWA).
TWA approached Superintendent of WWTP Jody Cook two months ago about allowing the company to use the plant for leachate processing. Blairsville’s WWTP makes a good candidate to take on processing due to the extra capacity in the tanks. TWA will pay the city $0.5 per gallon for the amount of leachate that the city accommodates.
“We’ve crunched the numbers and the amount of air available, we can treat it, and it would be a lot of revenue for the city,” explained Cook, “The only thing that we’ll have to purchase would be a pump because we don’t have an in-ground tank. We’re going to do a trial period, and they’ll give a pump until we get it approved by the city.”
In last month’s city council meeting, Cook and the council decided against adding leachate out of concerns that ammonia levels would be too high. However, after spending more time analyzing the procedure, Cook and TWA found that the WWTP can process leachate as long as enough air is available.
TWA’s proposal of $0.5 per gallon will provide the city in the worst case scenario with $526,600 a year if the plant only processes 28,800 gallons a day. The best-case scenario: if the plant can process 93,600 gallons a day, then TWA will pay the city $1,708,200 a year.
Councilman Tony Dyer asked, “This all is going to be hauled to us?”
Mayor Jim Conley confirmed, “It would be hauled to us and pumped into one of our digesters that is not in use at this time.”
The above ground tanks require the city to purchase a new pump to process the leachate.
It won’t alter the existing process at the WWTP, just act as an additive. It’s a chance for extra revenue for the city. Blairsville’s WWTP currently using approximately 30 percent of the facilities capacity at the moment.
“I don’t think they’ve tried it in an SVR plant before, which is why they want to have a trial,” said Cook, “We can’t violate our permit period, so if that happens then we don’t do it. I don’t foresee that, and we have no issue with ammonia, and we’re not using all the air in the tank now.”
The plan’s to start slow and let the organisms acclimate to the leachate with 5 gallons a minute for two weeks, then increase it to ten gallons a minute. Eventually, leachate will reach the 15 gallons a minute and maintain that setting.
Ellijay has implemented a similar process, and Cook visited the facility to see how it works and how Blairsville can undertake the process.
“I talked to the operator down there, and he said as long as you’ve got enough air, then you can treat it. There’s nothing else bad in it. It’s just high ammonia,” stated Cook.
TWA’s a Georgia Environmental Service Company and owned by several parties including State Senator Steve Gooch who explained that the treatment of leachate by under capacity plants’s a “good source of revenue for the city.”
“Typical municipal systems and septic waste systems take it,” said Gooch, “It’s a clean and effective way to dispose of the liquid and to treat it.”
Leachate consists of water, suspended materials, dissolved solids, nitrogen, and other organic substances, which makes it ideal to supplement the WWTP living ecosystem. The nitrogen will turn into ammonia during the aeration.
By adding leachate to the plant on days when the plant can’t maintain a level feeding schedule for the organisms in the WWTP. By using an empty process tank to store the leachate, it can readily meter the substance into the plant.
Until recently, most activated sludge plants operated at a max flow of 200mg/L BOD and TSS at 20mg/L ammonia loading. The TKN will be around 40-60mg/L. To better illustrate this example, TWA provided the following: A plant designed at 1.0 MGD should process 200mg/L BOD and 20mg/L and it can remove 1668 lbs/day of BOD and 166 lbs of ammonia. However, if the plant only operates at 0.35 mg/L with an average of 150mg/L and 15mg/L, then it’s only processing 437 lbs/day of BOD and 44 lbs/day of ammonia.
The leachate will keep the organisms at the WWTP eating at a slow rate by maintaining an even flow at all times.

Mrs. Alice Henderson age 81 of James Henderson Rd. Young Harris passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday May 22, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Henderson was born on April 7, 1938 in Dalton, GA., the daughter of the late Grayson Ramey and the late Dallie Griggs Ramey. She was a lifelong resident of Union County. Alice loved sewing, quilting, gardening and growing flowers. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her one special request was that you all meet her in Heaven. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Henderson in 2010, two sons, Doug Henderson in 2008, Carlos Henderson in 2006, three brothers, Jerry and Junior Ramey and Frank Mckin and a sister, Josephine Mckin. Mrs. Henderson was a member of Many Forks Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Henderson are two sons and one daughter in law, Darrel and Mary Henderson of Franklin, NC., Sammy Henderson of Warne, four grandchildren, Venessa Long and Haley Henderson of Franklin, Eric Henderson of Ft. Oglethorpe and Dustin Henderson of Young Harris, two great grandchildren, Liam Long and Angyll Henderson, Rilee Flowers, Colton & Summer Henderson. several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 24, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. R.L. Martin and Rev. Billy Stiles officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Scott Lockaby, Ron Bradburn, Eric Henderson, Logan Quinton, Hunter Quinton and Junior Chastain. Special music will be L.D. & Irene Buchanan. Interment will follow in the Many Forks Baptist Church Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband James. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-9:00 pm.

The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Frank Ray Rogers, age 92 of Blairsville who passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019.
Ray was born in Union County, Georgia on February 19, 1927, one of nine children in the household. His family lived in the Young Cane area where his father operated a store . Eventually, they moved to Blairsville to expand the family’s merchant business. Ray volunteered for the Army when he was 17 years old and was sent to fight for his country during World War II. Ray returned home to continue his father’s mercantile business and begin a family of his own. Ray worked for the store and hauled merchandise in from Atlanta. The store grew to include groceries, clothing, and furniture.
Ray’s approach to business and life is admired by many and will long be remembered. A number of people have shared stories that “Ray Rogers kept my family from starving”. Ray had a big heart and would stand to help anyone. Ray had been an active member of both the Methodist Church for 88 years and in the Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 where he received his 70 years apron this past year. He enjoyed athletic competition and passed along that legacy to his family. He and others started the local Quarterback Club which still continues to this day.
He leaves behind: his loving wife of 72 years, Mamie Townsend Rogers; son & daughter-in-law, Terry & Jerri Rogers; daughter & son-in-law, Kay & Milton Bradley; brother, Tommy Rogers; and sister, Louise Lance. Also, sharing in his legacy are three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Randall Rogers and Roberta Seabolt Rogers; five brothers; and one sister.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Union County with Pastor Mark Burgess officiating. Eulogy will be given by Mandy Hunter. Music will be provided by Tommy Townsend and John Nix. Military Honors will be presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Interment will follow at Union Memory Gardens with Masonic Rites presented by Allegheny Lodge #114. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Larry Lance, Gary Lance, Robby Rogers, Mark Rogers, Tommy Rogers, and Robert Rogers. Honorary pallbearers include Rogers Food Store employees and friends.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces the death and graveside services for Christopher Wade Mason, age 67, of Fair Oaks Range, Texas, who passed away on Friday, February 15th, 2019 in Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Mr. Mason was born in Copperhill, Tennessee, a son of Geraldine Grizzle Mason, and the late Wade Robert Mason. He lived for many years in Buford, Georgia.
Surviving family members include his mother, Mrs. Geraldine Mason, of Winder, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, David Christopher and Lana Mason, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas; and son and daughter-in-law, Andrew Lee and Cristy Mason of Yellville, Arkansas; a brother, Gregory Mason, of Grayson, Georgia; three grandchildren: Hayleigh Mason, Kamryn Mason, and Sarah Mason. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Michael Nuel Mills (“Mike”), 71, of Blairsville, GA passed away peacefully at his home following an extended illness on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Mike was born on November 6, 1947 in Columbus, GA, son of the late Nuel Hugh Mills and the late Ruby Marion Bazemore (“Teeny”) Mills. Mr. Mills was a graduate of the University of Georgia and a longtime teacher with the Muscogee County School District in Columbus, GA where he also worked as the Assistant Director of Transportation totaling 33 years of service. Mike loved Georgia football, collectibles, NASCAR, history, bulldogs, and he loved to make people laugh and smile with his quick wit. Most of all he loved his family dearly, and he was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Mr. Mills was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville, GA.
Michael Nuel Mills is survived by his loving wife and best friend of forty seven years, Jane Ellen Powell (“Lightning”) Mills of Blairsville, GA; two sons, Stephen Mills of Clarksville, GA and Jason Mills (Kimberly Mills) of Camden, NC; three sisters, Donna Baker (Colonel William H. Baker) of Mobile, AL; Kathy Mills and Lisa Mills both of Columbus, GA; two grandchildren, Luke Mills and Lauren Mills both of Camden, NC; nephew, Christopher Baker (Ashley) of Mobile, AL; nieces Amy Baker and Angela Baker both of Mobile, AL; as well as many other family members and friends. Mike enriched the lives of many, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA with Mike’s cousin, Rev. Brian Bazemore officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org. The family will meet with friends following the services at First Baptist Church.
