Mr. Lindy Smith age 72 of Brandy Run, Blairsville passed away at Union General Hospital following after an extended illness. Lindy was a retired building contractor and always had some type of project going. He had lived in Alaska for 15 years and enjoyed Harley motorcycles.
Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Sylvia Braxton Smith of Blairsville, one sister Cindy Smith of Haines City, Florida and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Fellowship of the Hills church and will be announced.

James Garth Moose: Obituary

Mr. James Garth Moose age 56 of Gainesville, GA. formerly of Suches passed away peacefully on Friday October 12, 2018 in Wrightsville, GA following an extended illness. Mr. Moose was born on May 23, 1962 in Union County, the son of the late Emory Moose and the late Barbara Searcy Moose. He lived most of his life in Suches and was a 1981 Graduate of Woody Gap School. Garth loved hunting, fishing and most of all spending time with his grandchildren, He was a loving father, brother and grandfather. Garth was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches.
Surviving Garth are two sons and one daughter in law, Orrin and Mayra Moose of Gainesville, Dalton Moose of Flat Rock, AL., two daughters and sons in law, BreAnna and Matt Reddit, Amber and Brian Fields all of St. Cloud, FL., two brothers, Dwayne and Stephen Moose both of Suches, five grandchildren, Culen, Leyna, Emma, Ely and Axel, several cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday October 16, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Jeff Hamlin, Bruce Fallow, Stephen Moose, Trevor Beavers, Bobby Moose and Ben Barnes. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11-1:00 pm. Interment will follow in the Zion Church Cemetery.

Mr. Gene Clyde Reeves Sr. age 86 of Riverside Drive Hiawassee passed away peacefully on Monday October 8, 2018 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Reeves was born on June 11, 1932 in Atlanta, GA., the son of the late John Benjamin Reeves and the late Viola McMullan Reeves. He was a veteran of the US Army of the Korean War. He had made his home in Hiawassee for the past twenty two years moving from Jonesboro, GA. Gene loved fishing, going to auctions, country music, baseball and going to fairs. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie A. Fulton Reeves in 1994, his parents and six siblings. Gene was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving Mr. Reeves are one daughter and son in law, Leta and Robert Serpas of Jonesboro, one son and daughter in law, Clyde and Barbara Reeves of Sharpsburg, GA, one sister, Doris Carson of Forest Park, GA., three grandchildren, Robert Serpas of Savannah, Adam Serpas of Milton, GA., James Serpas of Hiawassee, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced with interment to follow in the Forest Lawn cemetery in College Park, GA. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to a favorite charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Reeves.

Ruby Alline McClure: Obituary

Mrs. Ruby Alline McClure age 89 of Brannon Nix Spur Young Harris passed away peacefully on Friday September 28, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness. Mrs. McClure was born on July 7, 1929 in Union County, the daughter of the late Major Grant and the late Dora Shuler Grant. Ruby loved gardening and spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and especially her great grandchildren were the joy of her life. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee Rolen Gibson in 1977 and her second husband, Frank McClure in 1995, her son, John Gibson in 2016, two sisters, Donnie Anderson and Louise Breedlove. Mrs. McClure was a member of Many Forks Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. McClure are two sons , Charles and Gladys Gibson, Melvin Gibson, one daughter, Judy and Chuck Albury, two daughters in law, Judy Gibson, Diane and Kenneth Davis all of Young Harris, Like a daughter, Linda and Charles Floyd of Blairsville, two brothers, David Grant of Murphy, Henry Grant of Dallas, GA., two sisters, Ossie Mae Jones and Dorothy Vandiver both of Young Harris, six grandchildren, Chad, Cody, Jesse, Jenna, Krystal and Kimberly, nine great grandchildren, Colten, Copper, Maeva Rose, Layla, Jayden, Braylee, Reed, Khloe and Jamison, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday September 30, 2018 at 3:00 pm from the Many Forks Baptist Church with Rev. R.L. Martin and Rev. Ronnie Abernathy officiating. Special music will be presented by Jonathan Adams. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Chad, Cody and Jesse Gibson, Brandon Anderson, Sean Spade and Ryan Hadas. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Colten Gibson and Reed Adams. Interment will follow in the Many Forks Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband. The family will meet with friends at the Many Forks Church on Sunday from 1-3:00 pm.

Union County Narcotics Division & CID seize Six Kilos of Crystal Meth with a street value of $600,000

Blairsville, GA On July 10, 2018 Union County Narcotics Division along with Criminal Investigation Division served a search warrant at a Blairsville Ga. address resulting in the seizure of Six Kilos of Crystal Meth with a street value of $600,000 along with several thousand dollars.
Arrested were Janice Ann Hall 46 years old of a Blairsville address. She is currently charged with 3 counts of sale of Meth. and Trafficking Meth and is incarcerated with no bond set. Troy Allen Hall 43 years of age of a Tennessee address was charged with Trafficking Meth and remains incarcerated with no bond. Melinda Ann Smallen 54 years old of a Tennessee address was charged with Trafficking and remains incarcerated with no bond.
Investigator Drew Stewart lead this investigation and is the largest Meth. Seizure and arrest in the area. Sheriff Mack Mason praised the efforts of the Narcotics Division and said- “do not come to Union County to sell drugs”.

Community May 4, 2018Saturday, May 19, 2018, is almost here, Towns and Union County families! Nottely Marina, located at 86 Doucette Circle in Blairsville, is the place to be. The Kid’s Fishing Derby starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. You don’t want to miss this end-of-the-school-year family event. Admission and parking are free. Parents must accompany their kids.
Win a prize for catching one of the biggest fish. You might also win if you catch the ugliest fish, the smallest fish or the prettiest fish. The fish are biting. Carp, perch, stripers and bream have been sighted at the marina. There will be on-shore fishing activities to entertain younger kids.
Buy a lunch plate, snacks and a beverage. Enter the raffles for a chance to win more lake fun. All proceeds benefit S.A.F.E. (Support in Abusive Family Emergencies).
Meet representatives from the Georgia Deparment of Natural Resources and Lake Nottely Improvement Association. No fishing permit is required in order to participate.
The S.A.F.E. Kid’s Fishing Derby is one of two events being sponsored by Nottely Marina. There will also be a S.A.F.E. Sail Into Sunset Cruise on Tuesday evening, June 19, 2018. Watch for details.

Republican Women of Union County April Meeting – We Are Still Here Guest Speaker

The monthly meeting of the Republican Women of Union County was held at 1:00 pm on April 20, 2017
at Steve’s Steak House and Cookie Jar. Following the Invocation by Linda Hill, President Little
asked everyone to join in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Pat Thibodeaux reminded members that Representative Matt Gurtler will appear at a Town Hall
Meeting to be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday April 28 at the Union County Butternut Community Center.
This event is hosted by the Towns Union County Tea Parties and co sponsored by the Union County
GOP.
Deb Curlette invited all in attendance to the 2nd annual Kentucky Derby. All proceeds of this event
will benefit Towns and Union County S.A.F.E. The Kentucky Derby will be held on May 6, 2017, 5-
7:30 pm at the Union County Butternut Community Center. Call 706-379-1901 for additional
information.
Members were excited to welcome Jim Brown III, Chairman of the We Are Still Here Memorial,
Kathie Tiger Garrett, and Judy Lanier, Fundraising Chairperson. Linda Hill and Emily Fox introduced
our guests.
Guest Speaker Brown’s fascinating speech explained the purpose of We
Are Still Here. Said Mr. Brown, “Originally, we thought this memorial
was about us, about Blairsville. I came to the realization we had
selfishly made this about us. But seeing the emotional reaction that
tribal members had to the thought of being welcomed home, we
realized this was about them. This has truly turned into a spiritual
pilgrimage reconnecting the Muscogee and Cherokee peoples of today
with the spirits and homelands of their ancestors.”
The Republican Women of Union County meet the third Thursday of every month. The next meeting
will be held on April 20, 2017 at 1 pm at Steve’s Steakhouse and Cookie Jar. We welcome all
interested Union County women to join us at our next meeting.
Union and Towns Partner for the 2020 Census

Blairsville, Ga – Union and Towns County formed the Trusted Voices committee for assistance with the 2020 census.
With the 2020 Census rapidly approaching – April 1, 2020, Union, Towns, Blairsville, Hiawassee, and Young Harris partnered with the Patrick Malone to form the Trusted Voices committee to ensure maximum participation.
“We had a meeting six week ago with a lady from the Governor’s Office, Anna Miller,” said Mayor Jim Conley “Commissioner Paris put together an agreement with Mr. Patrick Malone who is here tonight that puts [Malone] in charge of the working end of the Census.”
Mayor Conley asks for committee members for Trusted Voices.
In the 2010 report, Union recorded around 85 percent of the total population. Towns recorded 87 percent.
Malone hopes to increase Census participation in 2020. The organization serves to encourage individuals to answer the survey through door-to-door visits and community engagements. These efforts will gear up in the fall to promote awareness.
“The committee’s known as the Trusted Voices Campaign. The responsibilities are really minor. It’s just being aware what’s going on with the Census and make sure that we exceed last Census’ participation rate,” explained Malone.
Blairsville City Council appointed Councilman Mary Ruth Cook and Councilman Rhonda Mahan to serve on the Trusted Voices committee to represent Blairsville’s interest. They will have one meeting with Malone and then spread the word in the community.
The city paid Trusted Voices $500 to utilize the service. Hiawassee and Young Harris also paid $500, but Union and Towns are expected to cover the rest of the cost.

Gertrude “Trudy” Fearing White, 95 formerly of the 1200 block of Riverside Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, May 17, 2019 in Blairsville, GA. She was born March 8, 1923 in Elizabeth City to the late Enoch Pratt Fearing and Gertrude Evans Fearing and was the widow of Beverly Wright White. She was a retired secretary for the Elizabeth City Pasquotank Schools, a member of Christ Episcopal Church, The Wareham Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, US Heritage Society, Colonial Dames of 17th Century, Mayflower society, and Who’s Who in NC.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly W. Peterson (Allen) of Mineral Bluff, GA, and Betty W. Quinn {Terry) of Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren, Andrew Wright Schlueter, John Michael Schlueter, Cameron Quinn, and Ramsay Quinn; and two great grandchildren, Caroline Wright Schlueter and Chad Thompson Schlueter. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Raymond “Boopie” Fearing and Fred Fearing.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Jim McGee officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following in the service in parish hall. Burial will be in the Episcopal Cemetery.
