BLAIRSVILLE, Ga – Many Independence Day festivities are returning to Union County in 2021 after COVID-19 resulted in a cancellation last year.
Those interested can start enjoying the long weekend on Friday with a courthouse concert. Don Byers will be performing, beginning at 7 p.m. Lucky’s Tacqueria just down from the square will also have live music from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on its back porch area.
The annual Lake Nottely Boat Parade will be held on Saturday, July 3. Boats can start lining up around 10:30 a.m. and the parade begins at 12. Parking in the marina is limited so carpooling is encouraged. David McMahon will be performing live too.
Fourth of July Fireworks will take place Sunday at Meeks Park. North Georgia Technical College will also be accommodating the event. Families can enjoy bounce houses, food, and fun while waiting for the fireworks to start. The event is free, but some can purchase a reserved parking space from the Chamber of Commerce for $50. The Chamber’s also holding a “Backyard Party Pack” raffle for $10 a ticket. Several local businesses donated to the giveaway, which includes Longhorn Steakhouse gift basket, cornhole boards, Yahtzee yard game, wooden “Welcome to the Porch” wall decor, BBQ grill, 10×10 pop-up tent, 2 pairs of his and hers Ray-Ban sunglasses, lawn chairs, camping chair, Rolling Thunder River Co tubing passes, Splash Island season pass. Raffle tickets can be purchased from the Chamber United Community Bank, Rustic Mountain Decor, Keen Creations Co., and Mountain Life Mercantile.
For those wishing to celebrate in Suches, Union County Fire Department Station 5 will begin their show at 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 4.
BLAIRSVILLE, Ga – While the annual parade isn’t taking place again this year, a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 29 at 10 a.m. in Union County War Memorial Veterans’ Park.
The solemn ceremony will honor those who gave “the last full measure of devotion” for their country.
All are invited to attend and follow social distancing guidelines. Veterans’ Park is located at the corner of School Circle and Hughes Street, not far from the square.
More Memorial Weekend Events
Paradise Hills Resort’s also hosting its 2nd annual Great American Pie Fest to honor Americas’ Heroes. The event costs $25 and takes place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Hiawassee Pro Rodeo starts on Friday, May 28, and ends on Saturday, May 29 at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. The event costs $15 for adults, $10 for children six to 12. The rodeo begins each night at 8 p.m.
In Blue Ridge, Spring Arts in the Park runs Saturday and Sunday with over 200 arts, crafts, and food booths. Admission is $5. Southeastern Tourism Society recognizes it as one of the Top 20 tourism events.

Copperhead Lodge will be hosting a New Year’s Eve party with live music from the Larry Scroggs Band. The restaurant opens at 4 p.m. and the music starts at 8 p.m. Copperhead Lodge is charging at $10 cover for the event.
On New Year’s Day, make the ultimate fresh start and take the polar plunge on Lake Nottely. The fourth annual at 10 a.m. off the Deaver Boat Ramp off Deaver Road. Good luck to all who participate.
Towns County Events
Georgia Mountain Fairground is hosting a firework show at 8:45 p.m. The event is free and hot chocolate, BBQ, and hotdogs will be for sale.
Brasstown Resort is hosting a 2021 New Year’s Eve Gala. The party alone costs $299 per couple including taxes and gratuities. The guest room package is $659 with upgrade options available.
The open bar begins at 7:30 p.m. with a gourmet buffet from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Music and dancing will take place throughout the evening and a ball drop at midnight. The event is formal attire and attendees must be 21 or older.
