Mr. Russell Townsend Berglund age 88 of Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home on Friday May 31, 2019, under the care of Hospice, with his son next to his side. following an extended illness. Mr. Berglund was born on August 9, 1930 in Cambridge, MA., the son of the late George W. Berglund and the late Grace Townsend Berglund. He was a veteran of the US Navy of the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW. Russell was a loving father, He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Goss Berglund in 2005 his brother Paul W. Berglund of Tallahassee, FL Mr. Berglund attended the Unity Church.
Surviving Mr. Berglund are one daughter , Virginia Ann Berglund – McCabe of Ogdensburg, NY., his son, George Stanley Berglund of Blairsville, a close friend, Mary Anderson of Blairsville, one grandchild, three great grandchildren, and Ne Ne his favorite four legged buddy.
A memorial service will be held at a later date . with interment to follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery will be announced. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made in Mr. Berglund’s memory. to Pruitthealth Hospice of Blue Ridge GA

Lime – A UGA Extension Article

Lime
Lime is a very important part of having healthy soil where we live. Knowing how much to apply and where to apply are very important considerations to effectively use lime. Let’s talk about what lime does, why you need it, how much to apply, and how to apply it.
There are a couple of different types of lime that you can purchase. Ag lime is a very common type. It is made up of calcium, carbon, and oxygen. Ag lime will do a very good job of raising the pH in your soil. Dolomitic lime also raises the pH level of soil, but it has magnesium in it as well. If your soil is deficient in magnesium, dolomitic lime is a good option to raise the soil pH, and to increase the amount of magnesium in your soil.
When you get to the bottom of it lime raises the pH in soil. If you recall from chemistry class, pH is basically a measure of the free hydrogen ions in a substance. In this case that substance is soil. pH is a scale that goes from 1 – 14. Numbers below 7 are acidic and numbers above 7 are basic. 7 is neutral. Our soil is going to be naturally acidic. I’ve seen soil reports with pH ranging from 4.5 – 5.5. Most plants like to have a pH of 6 – 6.5. The past couple of weeks I’ve been talking about fertilizers. pH is very important because it impacts how available the nutrients are to plants to be able to take them up. If the pH is low, then most plants won’t be able to grow because they can’t utilize the nutrients that are in the soil.
There’s no way to accurately know how much lime you need to add with doing a soil test first. A soil test will make a recommendation for how much lime you should add based on your pH. It is possible to add too much lime. If you add lime year after year with looking at a soil test as a guide you may end up over liming your land. This can lead to a pH that is too high. You can run into similar issues as with a pH that is too low. A high pH is not common around here unless you’ve over applied lime. In the western half of the country soils naturally have a high pH.
In small areas lime can be applied with a push spreader. You want the lime to make as much contact with the soil as possible, so it may take a few days to water it in. Lime does not dissolve very well in water so it may take a while for the lime to take full effect. Lime can be bought in powder form or pelletized. Both work well, but the pelletized may make less of a mess. There is also liquid lime. Liquid lime can be effective, but it will take more product because it has been diluted down. Larger areas such as a pasture may need a spreader truck to apply the lime evenly and efficiently.

Mrs. Deborah “Debbie” Elaine Tanner age 58 of Tanner Drive Murphy passed away peacefully on Friday February 15, 2019 at her home following a brief illness. Mrs. Tanner was born on January 18, 1961 in Niles. OH., the daughter of Arlene Hughes Reid and the late Alvin Reid. Debbie had worked at GA Boot for several years and at the time of her death was employed with MGM Brakes for over sixteen years. She loved riding motorcycles and riding horses. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She adored her grandchildren with all of her heart. She was preceded in death by her father and also a brother, Mark Reid. Debbie was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Debbie are her loving husband and best friend of nineteen years, Rodney Tanner of Murphy, two daughters and sons in law, Cheryl and Yung of Portland, OR., Cassie and Michael Ledford of Hayesville, her mother, Arlene Reid of Calhoun, GA., eight brothers and sisters, Arlene Fisk of Houston, TX., Bill (Rose) Reid, Richard (Vada) Reid and Roger Reid all of Niles, OH., John Reid and Mary Reid both of Calhoun, GA., Charlene Reid of Green Mountain, NC., Alvin Reid of Culver City, CA., three grandchildren, Aaliyah Young, Thomas Rowe and Alice Ledford, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday February 18, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Lee Tanner and Rev. Hoyt Brown officiating. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Monday from 12-2:00 pm.

2019 Night to Shine – A night unlike any other

Shine Like the Stars in the Universe
There is one night a year when stars above look down in awe. Friday, February 8, 2019, was that special night.
Excitement filled the air as paparazzi and crowds gathered for the red carpet event hosted by First United Methodist Church of Union County (FUMC) in Blairsville. Honored guests from Fannin, Gilmer, and Union counties in Georgia and Cherokee County, SC, would soon arrive.
On this “Night to Shine”, 108 Kings and Queens in their finest attire were escorted through the cheering crowd by students from Young Harris College, volunteers from FUMC, and from the community. Just the beginning of a very special evening for memories to last a lifetime.
The royal guests were delighted to be pampered by hairdressers or to have their shoes shined before heading off on a thrilling ride in a stretch limousine. Then it was time for dancing, what many attendees had been looking forward to and so they danced the night away.
As the evening came to a close each King and Queen received a gift bag along with a t-shirt commemorating the event.
Former NFL quarterback, Heisman winner, and current New York Mets outfielder, Tim Tebows’ Night to Shine is now in its 5th year. According to the Tim Tebow Foundation website, this special night’s history began in 2014 with a simple vision, “work with churches around the country to provide an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love for people with special needs, ages 14 and older.”
In 2015, the first Night to Shine was held with help from 15,000 volunteers among 44 participating churches in 26 states and 3 countries to make 7,000 honored guests feel like royalty. In 2019 the event now has over 600 churches from around the world to make a memorable event for an estimated 100,000 Kings and Queens with the help of 200,000 volunteers!
This is the second year First United Methodist Church of Union County hosted the event.

Mrs. Michelle Lynn Seay age 50 of Dyer Ridge, Blairsville passed away on Wednesday December 19, 2018 in Union County from injuries sustained in an airplane accident. Michelle was born on February 10, 1968 in Union County, the daughter of Mary Frances Rogers King and the late Charles William King. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Michelle loved going to the beach, the lake, jeep rides, fuzzy socks, Diet Mountain Dew, Reese’s Cups and being outdoors. Her three loving daughters, her grandchildren and her dog Raven were her life and brought her great joy. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. She was always very outgoing and lived life to the fullest. At the time of her death, she was employed at Riverstone in Blue Ridge. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles William King in 2005. Michelle was of the Interdenominational faith.
Surviving Mrs. Seay are her mother, Mary Frances King, three daughters and sons in law, Brittany and Sam Combs, Katie and Josh Bergen, Anna and Alex Deyton all of Blairsville, one brother and sister in law, Mike and Cindy King of Cleveland, GA., five grandchildren, Kaden, Corbin, Samantha, Adalynn and Allyson, nieces and nephews, Brandon King of Conyers, Lauren and Matthew Filbeck of Cleveland, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday December 23, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Bill Schakat officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery where she will rest next her father Charles. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Habitat For Humanity in Michelle’s memory. Charles William “Bill” Haynes: Obituary
Obituaries December 17, 2018Charles William “Bill” Haynes (82). Passed away peacefully under hospice care surrounded by family on December 6th, 2018.
Bill was a loving husband to his soul-mate of 30 years and father and father-figure to so many. He had a Master’s Degree in Science Education from Florida State University and was a lifelong educator. He was also an Eagle Scout, private pilot, scuba diver, boater, sailor, fisherman, and under-water photographer, resulting in over 10,000 educational slides depicting the 3 dimensions of Florida, from the air, on the ground, and under water. He helped setup the Undersea Lab at Key Largo Marine Resources Development Foundation and the Marine Lab Education Program. He was past president and active for 30 years with FMSEA Florida Marine Science Education Assoc. and the founding and lifelong member of LEEF League of Environmental Educators in Florida. He was a beloved football coach and marine science teacher at Fort Lauderdale High School, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where he eventually retired and so much more. After retirement, Bill moved with his wife full-time to the Florida Keys and later to Central Florida. Bill’s had a life-long love-affair with Florida. Survivors include his loving wife, Sande Haynes, daughter Laura, daughter Ginger and Son-and-Law Ken, Sons Chad, Jason, and Son-in-Law Byron, daughter Hena and Son-in-Law Dana, grandchildren Cody, Alyssa, Jennifer, and Chloe, great-grandchildren Lucas, Lilliana, Levi, and Delaney Jo, brother John Earl Haynes, and his dog Tippy II.

Mr. Gerald Lee Shurwin Jr. age 54 of Emma Grace Lane Blairsville passed away on Saturday December 8, 2018 at his home following an extended illness. Gerald was born on August 18, 1964 in Kenmore, NY., the son of the late Gerald Lee Shurwin Sr. and the late Elizabeth Cummings Shurwin. Gerald had made his home in Blairsville for the past eighteen years. He enjoyed camping, being outdoors and just hanging around with his friends. He loved all of his many animals. He was a kind and loving person and friend. Gerald was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Gerald are his stepmother, Anna Shurwin of Buffalo, NY., his adopted dad, John Miller of Blairsville, four brothers, Robert Shurwin, Chas Wiewiorski, Freddie Shurwin, Ricky Shurwin all of Buffalo, NY., one sister, Kelley Wiewioski of Buffalo, an aunt, Cathy McDowell of Buffalo, his close friends, Robert Green, Joel and Tammy Manis all of Blairsville, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Donna June Reitzel Dunkle, 90, formerly of R.D. 1, Jersey Shore, Pa., died last Saturday morning, December 1, in Young Harris, Georgia, where she had lived since 2013 with her oldest daughter, Cheryl Dunkle Arndt, while battling Alzheimer’s disease. June (known mainly by her middle name) passed peacefully in her sleep. Born on June 15, 1928, in Duboistown, Pennsylvania, June was the eldest daughter of Mervin Paul Reitzel (1898-1985) and Margaret London Reitzel (1906-1997). When her father, a machinist, lost his job in the Great Depression, the family escaped to her mother’s ancestral farm on Dutch Hollow Road, near Jersey Shore, where they lived off the land during most of June’s childhood. While a student at Jersey Shore High School, June wore a locket containing a picture of a neighbor, Mack Dunkle, then serving the Navy in the Pacific. They had met as children while ice-skating on Pine Creek. After marrying, in 1947, they settled on the same creek. Mack, a Jersey Shore mail carrier for 35 years, died in 2006 at age 80 (see www.dunklefamily.com/mack_dunkle_obituary.html).
At a high-school reunion in the mid 1950s, Mack and June won a humorous citation for fertility. They had five children in only seven and a half years. Surviving are Steve, now in Blairsville, Ga.; Terry, in Danbury, Conn.; Cheryl Dunkle Arndt, in Young Harris, Ga.; and Denise Dunkle Booth, in Williamsport, Pa. Their sister, Senie Dunkle Eyer, of State College, Pa., died in 1985. Today, June’s 39 descendants also include 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
In 1961, June experienced a religious conversion that drew her to mission work. She co-founded a local food pantry that later merged into the New Love Center in Jersey Shore. She also served as a lay pastor for the Avis (Pa.) Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, where for years she ministered to children in an after-school “Happy Hour.” She and Mack preached regularly at RV camps on Pine Creek. June eventually became an elder in the televangelist firm Morris Cerullo World Evangelism. In her last years, she attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, Ga. June held at least two political offices in her local township: tax assessor and judge of elections. She was also active in the Tombs Run School PTA and other civic organizations.
An animal lover all her life, June was a breeder of registered terriers, chihuahuas, and Pekingese. She also raised chickens, ducks, and geese; helped Mack run a boarding kennel; and adopted many cats, a crow, a robin, a mouse, a red squirrel, a groundhog, an opossum, numerous turtles, and myriad snakes and other wild animals brought home by her children. She loved planting and tending flowers — especially roses, poppies, and irises. She also kept aquariums full of guppies, swordfish, and neons, which she sometimes fed with mosquito larvae collected from local ponds.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, at the Tombs Run Cemetery, immediately north of the intersection of Pennsylvania routes 44 and 973. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the New Love Center Food Pantry, 229 South Broad Street, Jersey Shore, PA 17740 (phone 570-772-3275). Funeral arrangements are by the Mountain View and Frederick B. Welker homes in Blairsville, Ga., and Jersey Shore, Pa., respectively.

Mr. Kenneth Douglas Wilder age 79 of Wesley Mtn. Drive Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday November 18, 2018 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Wilder was born on Feb. 2, 1939 in Elberton, GA., the son of the late James Floyd Wilder and the late Martha Mozelle Brady Wilder. He was a veteran of the US Navy with over twenty four years of service to his Country and retired as a Senior Chief. Kenneth loved restoring old cars ( served as past President of the Elberton Car Club,” Steel Cruisin”), traveling with his wife Doris, working in his machine shop, was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles and was self taught to play the banjo. He was very active in Scouting and was an Eagle Scout and had served as Scout Master for many years. He was a loving and caring husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren, Karson Wilder and Jamie Hale and a brother, Buck Wilder. Kenneth was of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving Mr. Wilder are his loving wife and best friend of forty five years, Doris Schmitz Wilder of Blairsville, three sons and daughters in law, Scott and Angela Wilder of Douglasville, GA., Keith and Kim Wilder of Smyrna, TN., Konrad and Carrie Wilder of Rock Hill, SC., two daughters and one son in law, LaDonna and Steve Hale of Marietta, GA., Deanna Jorgensen of Blairsville, one sister and brother in law, Christine and Jeff Corbett of Lizella, GA., ten grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 21, 2018 at 10:00 am from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Burgess and Rev. Tim Adams officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Military Honors will be conducted by the North GA Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Boy Scout Troop 101 at First United Methodist Church in Mr. Wilder’s memory. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9:00-10:00 am.

Mr. Rex Edward Fultz age 88 of Fairview Church Rd. Blairsville formerly of Peru, IN. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday November 17, 2018 following an extended illness. Mr. Fultz was born on June 30, 1930 in Denver, IN., the son of the late Donald Edward Fultz and the late Ruth Louise Ream Fultz. He had made his home in Blairsville since 1972.He retired from Siemens after many years of service. He was a veteran of the US Marines of the Korean War. He was a member of the Tucker Masonic Lodge F&AM. Rex loved fishing, golfing and traveling with his wife Della. He was a loving and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Bruce Dwayne Fultz, a daughter, Cathy Rexine Harden, a brother, Raymond Fultz and three sisters, Lois Fultz, Margaret Anderson and Shirley Barron. Mr. Fultz was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Fultz are his loving wife and best friend of forty six years, Della Mae Payne Fultz of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Rex and Cindy Fultz Jr. of Thomaston, GA., his step children, Wendall Garrett, Teresa Jones and Scott Garrett all of McDonough, GA., one brother, Larry Fultz of Apple Valley, CA., six grandchildren, Bruce and Joseph Harden, Amy and Chuck Fultz, Angie and Amber Carter, many great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Joyce Jennings Sprayberry of Blairsville, Georgia who passed away on Friday, October 19, 2018 at her home.
Mrs. Sprayberry was a native of Alabama, and was a daughter of the late Thomas Hamilton Jennings and the late Ovie Humphries Jennings. She had lived in Blairsville since 1978 moving here from Gadsden, Alabama. Mrs. Sprayberry was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church and at Antioch Baptist church, when a member there, was active in Baptist Women’s groups and had served as a Sunday School Teacher. She was a self-taught artist, and had a hunger for knowledge. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Loyal Sprayberry, her son Allen Wade, her daughter-in-law, Catherine Louise, four brothers, Jack, Jerry, Thomas, and Hugh, and four sisters, Mary, Margaret, Francis, and Alice (Faye) along with her parents.
Surviving family members left to carry on her legacy are her sister Julia (Judy) of Anniston, Alabama, son, L. Gene Sprayberry, of Blairsville, two grandsons, Wade L. Sprayberry (Angel) of Blairsville and Kelly G. Sprayberry (Tracy) of Marietta, a great grandson Nathan Sprayberry (Amanda), a great granddaughter Mallory Sprayberry, great granddaughters Kassy Guffey (Justin) , Selena Victoria (Ben), great grandson Michael Victoria, and great, great granddaughter Emma Guffey as well as many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Monday October, 22, 2018 to be held at 6:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, Georgia with Reverend Jerry Karnes officiating. The Family will meet with friends on Monday, October 22nd at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. before the service starts. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Anniston, Alabama, on October 23rd, with Reverend Scotty Jarrard officiating. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Nathan Sprayberry, Michael Victoria, Justin Guffey, Michael Hitzing, Mike Stephens, Garran Crawford, and Ben Waterhouse.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to Georgia Baptist’s Children’s Home.
