Mrs. JoAnne Marie Voss age 82 of Blairsville passed away peacefully at her home on Friday December 28, 2018.Mrs. Voss had lived in this area since 2003 having moved here from Port Charlotte Fl.  JoAnne was of the Lutheran faith and she loved animals and collecting many different things.

Surviving Mrs. Voss are a son and daughter Leanne Voss of Port Charlotte, Fl. Robert Voss of Blairsville Ga. one daughter in law Julie Voss of Kenosha, WI., seven grandchildren Shane, Matt, Brandon, Alex, Nick, Zach, and Riley.

No services are planned at this time. The family requests any donations be made to the Union County Humane Society Mountain Shelter.

Mr. Raymond Cecil Eason age 64 of Windy Hill Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday December 23, 2018 following a brief illness. Mr. Eason was born on March 15, 1954 in Bartow, FL., the son of the Cecil C. Eason and Sylvia Johnston Eason. Raymond loved collecting knives. He was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle. Mr. Eason was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Eason are his loving wife and best friend, Marybeth Keim Eason of Blairsville, his mother, Sylvia “Janie” Eason of Plant City, FL., three children, Beau Eason of San Francisco, CA., Edwin Eason of Augusta, GA., Ashlea Eason of Gainesville, GA., one brother and sister in law, Drew and Cindy Eason of Plant City, FL., aunt, Mary Jean Hudson of Mulberry, FL., uncle, Edwin Eason of LA., brother in law and sister in law Robert and Irene Keim of Brooksville, FL., many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that you may “Pay it Forward” in Raymond’s memory.

Wilbur Benjamin Grippen Jr.

July 09, 1919 – December 23, 2018

Mr. Wilbur Benjamin Grippen Jr. age 99 of Betty Jo Circle Young Harris passed away peacefully in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Grippen was born on July 9, 1919 in New Haven, CT., the son of the late Wilbur Benjamin Grippen Sr. He was a veteran of the US Army of WWII. Wilbur loved gardening and woodworking. He was a fifty year member of the Ansantawae Masonic Lodge #89 of Milford, CT.  Wilbur was a long time member of the American Legion Post #127 and also a member of Woodmont Volunteer Fire Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Joan Wheelden Grippen in 1998. Mr. Grippen was of the Unity Church faith.

Surviving Mr. Grippen are one daughter and son in law, Judith and Leonard Anderson of Young Harris, one son and daughter in law, Walter Raymond and Joyce Lique of Hamilton, OH., seven grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will follow in the Orange Center Cemetery in Orange, CT. where he will rest next to his beloved wife Carol. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in memory of Mr. Grippen.

Mrs. Grapell Rich age 81 of Rich Farm Road, Blairsville passed away on Friday December 21, 2018 with her loving family by her side. Mrs. Rich was born in Union County on December,1 5, 1937 to the late Ed and Emma Harkins Payne.  Mrs. Rich was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Eugene Rich, two sons, Anthony Rich & Justin Larue Rich, and a great grand-daughter, Emma Rich. Mrs. Rich was a resident of Blairsville her entire life and she was of the Baptist faith. She was also an avid bowler & loved playing cards.

Surviving Mrs. Rich are three children, Wanda & Ernie Sistrunk, of Lafayette, LA., Eddie & Marie Rich of Blairsville, GA., and Tim & Rebecca Rich of Gainesville, GA. eleven grandchildren & fourteen great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Monday December 24, 2018 at 11:00pm from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel. Flowers are accepted if you wish. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6:00-9:00pm

Mr. George Rosco Henderson age 89 of Henderson Rd. Young Harris passed away peacefully on Monday December 17, 2018 in the Union County Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness. Mr. Henderson was born on May 14, 1929 in Marietta, GA., the son of the late Howard Henderson and the late Lorey Lee Henderson. George was a lifelong resident of Towns and Union Counties. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Brown Henderson in 1996, five brothers, Bass, Birl, Bob, Jim and Lloyd Henderson, and a son, George Steven Henderson. Mr. Henderson was a member and served as Deacon for over ten years at Many Forks Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Henderson are two daughters and sons in law, Loretta and Dink Garrett of Blairsville, Linda and Barry Young of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Greg and Ginny Henderson of Cumming, GA., six grandchildren, Cindy Young (John Bumgarner), Cody Garrett, Daniel and Bridgette Young, Katie Young, Blake Henderson and Caleb Henderson, many nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 19, 2018 at 11:00 am from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. R.L. Martin, Rev. Daniel Young  officiating. Special music will be presented by Jaron Whitmore and Katie Young. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Blake Henderson, Cody Garrett, Barry Young, Dink Garrett, Ron Bradburn and Scott Lockaby. Fatal Plane Crash in Blairsville

News

Union County, GA

According to authorities a small plane went down earlier tonight, December 19th near the airport located in Blairsville, Georgia.

Reportedly three people did not survive and one was life-flighted for emergency treatment.   The plane crash occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. Wednesday evening.  Our sources believe there was one male and 3 females on board.  FYN will update as more information becomes available.

Mrs. Anita P. Bryson age 72 of Bells Gap Rd. Hiawassee passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday December 11, 2018 following an extended illness. Anita was born on November 24, 1946 in Blairsville, GA., the daughter of the late James Earl Patterson and the late Dena Juanita King Patterson. She was a lifelong resident of Towns and Union Counties. Anita loved painting, crafting, baking and cooking for her friends and family. She loved spending time with those she loved. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Wayne Bryson, a daughter, Autumn Estee Bryson, a sister, Catherine Mosley, brother,  Jimmy Patterson. Mrs. Bryson was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Bryson are one daughter, Dena Robin Bryson of Hiawassee, four sisters and three brothers in law, Phyllis and Guy Wayne Shook of Blairsville, Barbara Moss of Blairsville, Pat and Bud Ledbetter of Blairsville, Martha and Wayne Matheson of Hayesville, brother and sister in law, Gerald and Beth Patterson, brother in law Stanley and Peggy Bryson, sister in law Regina Lee, two grandchildren, Harley Beasley and Teria Beasley, one great grandchild, Tatum, her caregivers, Robin and Stephanie, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 13, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Rev. Wayne Matheson and Gerald Patterson officiating. Mr. Roberson was born on September 14, 1930 to the late Efton Lee Roberson and the late Maurine Cowen Roberson. He was a lifelong resident of Union County. Grumpy enjoyed working on race cars, bowling, singing and making music. Mr. James Douglas Souther age 81 of Blairsville passed away on Wednesday November 28, 2018 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Souther was born on September 2, 1937 in Union County, the son of the late Gordon Souther and the late Thelma Ensley Souther. He was a lifelong resident of Union County and was a veteran of the US Air Force. James was a loving husband, brother and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents and also a sister, Agnus (Ann) Fussell. James was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Souther are his loving wife and best friend for 51 years, Claudine Butts Souther of Blairsville, two sisters, Evelyn Turner of Blairsville, Betty Duggan of Ringgold GA, cousins, Donald Duggan, Jack Duggan and Mona Trotter, nieces, Kathy Prince, Sandy Page and Kelley Davis, nephew, Jack Turner, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Lavada Louise Cheek age 62 of Corn Flower Rd. Blairsville passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on Tuesday November 20, 2018 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Cheek was born on August 21, 1956 in Union County, the daughter of the late C.A. Holbrooks and the late Bertha Duckworth Holbrooks. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Lavada loved Gospel singing (She sang at many churches and for funerals), most of all she loved telling everyone that she met about Jesus, witnessing to them and the love that he had for them. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents and also two brothers, Calvin Holbrooks and Roy Edward Holbrooks and three sisters, Rita Faye Kelley, Eva Nell Smith and Barbara Ellen Holbrooks. Lavada was a member of the Day of Grace Baptist Church.

Surviving Lavada are her loving husband and best friend, Herman Cheek of Blairsville, five daughters, Amber Hernandez of Norcross, Tabitha Pacheco of Pasco, FL., Brittany Hunter, Jennifer Cascarano, Jamie George all of Blairsville, one son, Jonathan Hunter of Blairsville, three stepsons, Kevin Cheek of Blairsville, James and Gary Cheek of Hiram, GA., two brothers and one sister in law, Quinton and Wanda Holbrooks , Ted Holbrooks all of Blairsville, three sisters and two brothers in law, Phyllis and Melvin Fuller of Lawrenceville, Leona Hunter, Joyce and Herbert Teague all of Blairsville, seventeen grandchildren, one great grandchild, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Lauretta Marie Carr age 75 of Blairsville passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 13, 2018 at Stonehenge following an extended illness. Mrs. Carr was born on Feb. 12, 1943 in Bangor, ME., the daughter of the late Edward Michael MacDonald and the late Yvonne Elizabeth Michaud MacDonald. Mrs. Carr loved quilting, cooking, Southern Gospel music, and family. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Carr in 2011. Mrs. Carr was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Carr are one son and daughter in law, Mark and Micki Carr of Blairsville, one daughter and son in law, Debbie- Jo and Keith Barley of Pace, FL., two brothers and sisters in law, Neil and Jeanne MacDonald of Hermon, ME., Mike and Donna MacDonald of Newburgh, ME., one sister and brother in law, Ann-Marie and Richard Madore of Hampden, ME., four grandchildren, Michael Carr, James Oliver, Mandi  Zeger and Eric Oliver, five great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 24, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. George Cline officiating, eulogy by granddaughter Mandi Zeger. Special music will be presented by Mark Carr and Kaley Raper. Interment will follow in the church cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband Wendell. Mr. William “Bill” Ray Fisher, age 71, of Shope Lane, Blairsville, passed away from a sudden illness at his residence Saturday, November 10, 2018.

Born in Alliance, Ohio to the late Robert and Floetta (Schultz) Fisher on February 11, 1947, Bill enjoyed golfing and fishing throughout his younger years. Bill moved to the Blairsville area from Bradenton, FL and enjoyed the fellowship and friendship he found at the Cabin Coffee Shop.

Bill is preceeded in death by a daughter, Mindi Fisher, in 2011, and survived by his sons, Michael (Dianne) Fisher of Wake Forrest, NC; Andrew (Ana) Fisher of Albany, NY; Chandler Fisher of Bradenton, FL; Chase (Jessica) Fisher of Bradenton, FL and a daughter, Tatum Fisher of Blairsville, GA. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Linda) Fisher of North Port, FL as well as four granddaughters and 4 grandsons.

William Meredith Crenshaw

December 05, 1928 – October 28, 2018

Mr. William Meredith Crenshaw age 89 of Young Harris GA went home peacefully to be with his lord and savior on Sunday, October 28, 2018 after an extended illness at the Clay County Care Center Hayesville NC.

Known as “Bill” to many, “Meredith” to many of his family members and daddy, pop or papa to his kids and grandkids. He was born on December  5, 1928 to the late Jesse E Crenshaw and Lola Barlow Crenshaw, Hawkinsville GA. Bill was a Navy veteran entering service at the end of WWII, serving in Pensacola FL and on board the USS Wantuck, APD 125 and was a past member of the American Legion. After leaving military service he and his loving wife Jenny settled in Orlando Florida. He was a self-taught HVAC technician, but there was nothing he couldn’t build or repair. He retired from Orange County Florida Government in 1988 where he was a maintenance foreman at the Orange County Court House. He and his wife loved to camp and visited all 50 states. He was a hard worker and devoted to his wife of 70 years and to his 5 sons and 1 daughter.

He loved his church and church family, he taught Sunday school for many years at Ivy Log Baptist Church Blairsville, GA. He was never at a loss for words telling others about his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Before moving to Young Harris he and his family attended Orlando Baptist Church where he was a long time Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Virginia E. (Dowdy) Crenshaw, brothers Billy (Janice) Crenshaw, and Sam (Shelia) Crenshaw; son and daughter-in-law Ed and Pauline Crenshaw of Young Harris, GA son and daughter-in-law Jim and Sharon Crenshaw of Toccoa GA, son and daughter-in-law Chuck and Helga Crenshaw of Arabi, GA, son Mike Crenshaw of Young Harris, GA, son Keith Crenshaw of Orlando FL, and daughter and son –in-law Peggy and Mike Waddell of Prosper TX. He also is survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of great friends.

Visitation will be on Tuesday evening October 30, 2018 from 6-8 pm at Mountain View Funeral Home, Blairsville GA.

Funeral Services will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel in Blairsville GA on Wednesday October 31, 2018 at 1:00 pm with the Reverend Tony Black and Reverend Jerry Karnes officiating, interment will follow at Ivy Log Baptist Cemetery, Hwy 129, Blairsville GA, with full military honor guard salute immediately following the funeral service. Music provided by Elaine Young & Biz Roesch. The following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Matt Crenshaw, Jesse Crenshaw, Michael Crenshaw, Peyton Fleming, Josiah Waddell, and Buddy Crenshaw. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hensley, age 84, of Blairsville, GA, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2018.
A life long resident of Union County, Mrs. Hensley was born on February 24, 1934 to the late Edward & Nancy Harkins Payne. She loved her family and community, as well as, Fishing every chance she got. She also loved a good game of cards with family and friends. Mary goes on to be with her parents, Ed & Nancy Payne; Husband, Marcus Hensley; Daughter, Brenda Sue Gay; Sisters, Mattie Plott ( Tom), Bessie Gilreath ( Russell), Bertha Garner, Nora Evans, Martha Ross Hawkins (Jack) and Bonnie Payne; Brothers, Hobert Payne, Willie “Bill” Payne (Margaret) and J.P. Payne. She will be remembered by all who new her, but especially missed by her Grandson, Roy Johnson; Great-Grandsons, Johnathan Johnson and Michael Henderson; Sister, Grapell Rich; Son-in-law, Tom Gay; Sisters-in-law, Evelyn Payne and Martha Fortenberry and Brother-in-law, Joe Evans. Mrs. Nancy Lee Trant, age 77 of Hiawassee Park formerly of Murphy, N.C.,  passed away peacefully on Sunday September 23, 2018, surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness. Mrs. Trant was born on November 9, 1940 in Flint, MI., the daughter of the late John Warner Brown and the late Marion Helen Lundsten Brown.

Mrs. Trant loved animals and served as the Executive Directive of the Humane Society in Sarasota, Florida. She was very involved in the Republican Party in Michigan and served as Genesee County Commissioner in Flint, Michigan from 1977 to 1983.  Mrs. Trant was a delegate to the 1976 and 1980 Republican National Convention for Ronald Reagan. Mrs. Trant served as the Michigan Executive Director in 1984 for President Reagan’s re-election campaign.  Her passion for liberty and the protection and adherence to our Constitution was a driving force in her life. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Trant in 2013, her parents and also a sister, Vivian DiPaolo. Nancy was of the Christian faith and looked forward to her Heavenly home with Jesus.

Surviving Mrs. Trant are two daughters and sons in law, Debbie and Gerry Shaw of Asheville, NC., Diana and Mark Donaldson of Grand Blanc, MI., one son, Dan Anderson of Reno, NV., one sister, Linda Headrick of Ft. Mills, SC., one brother, Warner Brown of Elmira, MI., ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held in November in Asheville, NC, time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Humane Society in memory of Mrs. Trant.

Cherokee County NC Sheriff’s Office investigating Murder

News

Murphy, NC— On September 7th, 2018 a Union County Georgia Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle just over the North Carolina/Georgia state line off Highway 129 in Union County Georgia. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot from the stop and was not apprehended. UCSO requested a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputy to go an address Carson Lane address, in the Martin’s Creek Community of Cherokee County, to do a welfare check on the registered owner of the vehicle and assist in furthering their investigation.

Cherokee County deputies arrived at the Carson Lane address and found the victim, 73 year old Jerry Dalrymple unresponsive and in immediate need of medical attention. Cherokee County EMS arrived on scene and Mr. Dalrymple was air lifted to a Chattanooga Tennessee hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Through further investigation, 19 year old Isaiah Beavers, of the Martins Creek community of Cherokee County was developed as a suspect and warrants were obtained for the Murder of Jerry Dalrymple.

On or about September 8th, 2018 Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Union County Sheriff’s Office Deputies took Beavers into custody at a residence in the Nottely Dam community of Union County Georgia. Beavers is currently held in the Towns/Union County jail awaiting extradition back to Cherokee County. There are additional persons of interest and additional arrests are anticipated.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “We continue our investigation in this this very grave crime. We are diligently searching for the additional suspects we have identified. My Office extends thanks to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Probation and Parole, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation all which were extremely helpful in this investigation. We continue to ask for prayers for all concerned.”
