The Panthers Sink The Vikings Ship

The smell of hamburgers cooking on the grill and the sound of the band playing the Panther hymn meant it was finally football season again. Your Union County Panthers (0-0) took on the East Hall vikings (0-1) last night in a non-conference game. It was finally time for the football season to official start.

The big question for the Panthers this year was, how were they going to replace Cole Wright (Army Commit). That would quickly be answered in the first quarter by Junior quarterback, Pierson Allison. After the panther defense shut the Vikings down it was time to see if the junior was the answer. Allison would lead the panthers down the field. The drive would be capped of by a 9 yard touchdown run by Senior running back Chad Buzzard. It was like deja vu because the next two touchdown drives would start and end like the first with Buzzard running it in. The Panthers defense was all over the place and would not give the Vikings an inch to work with. With the panthers up 21-0 we would head into halftime.

If the Vikings felt like the had any hope to make a comeback it would quickly be diminished. On the opening kickoff Senior safety, Chayton Schafer, would take it 80 yards to bring the score to 28-0. The Panthers would throw one more punch in the 3rd quarter with a 7 play, 70 yards touchdown drive topped of by a 7-yard run by Allison. The Vikings would throw a punch of their own in the fourth with 11 yard passing touchdown, but would miss the extra point. The game would end with Panthers victorious over the vikings 35-6. Some of the key performers from the game were: Chad Buzzard, Pierson Allison, Chayton Schafer, and the entire Panthers defense.

The Panthers look to build on this performance next week when they travel to Hiwassee, Georgia to take on the Towns County Indians (1-0).

Lady Panthers fall to North Hall, Panthers streak continues

     On Friday, Dec 15, the Union County Panthers took the long road trip from Blairsville to Gainesville to take on the North Hall Trojans.  Unfortunately for the boys, the trip home most likely felt much longer than the ride prior to tip-off.
     The Lady Panthers knew they were in for a tough battle, as they were without their star center Kait Mccarter (#30) for this game.  Mccarter left some very large sneakers to fill and her absence proved to be a critical one, not only offensively but also under the bucket on defense.
     No strangers to victory, the Lady Trojans recognized Mccarter’s absence immediately and took pressure toward the basket with each possession, while also rushing inside defensively to crash the boards for rebounds.  The Lady Trojans were able to dominate possession of the ball and ultimately ran away with the game early.
     At the half, the Lady Panthers were already down 30-19.  Ultimately the Panthers lost 58-36, falling to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAA, but the absence inside the box was the real loss as Union was out-rebounded 32-14. .  Offensively, skilled sophomore Andelin Hill led the way in the scorebook with 7 points in the game.
     For the boys game, the anxious and highly-motivated Panthers varsity started strong and were primed to win their seventh game in a row; their first in region play.  However, a technical foul against senior Crawford Colwell (#24) in the first quarter resulted in an ejection, and completely changed the dynamic of the game.  The Panthers’ bench would have to come together and step up to keep their perfect record alive.
     Thanks to some great coaching and a collaborative will to win, the Panthers would prevail.
     Union led 32-28 at the half, thanks to great hustle by the team on defense and a solid performance by sophomore Sawyer Drake (#14), who led the way with 11 points in the first half of play.
     Sophomores Pierson Allison (#21) and Sawyer Drake (#14) had a combined 40 points to lead the Panthers to a 52-49 victory over the Trojans and improve to 7-0 and 2-0 in the region.
     The next game will be Tuesday, Dec 19 as Union County fills the busses once again and hit the road, due south, for a non-region game against the Gilmer County Bobcats (Region 6-AAAA).

Kevin Hensley Joins TeamFYNSports

2016 #TeamFYNSports has a BIG announcement and we are very excited to share the news. The entire goal and commitment by #TeamFYNSports has always been to highlight young athletes in a positive way. FYN made a decision in 2015 to expand our coverage areas from three to ten counties.  The need for a growth driven director to lead #TeamFYNSports into the future sent us on a search.  FYN was looking for someone with character, focus, perseverance, direction, determination and an in depth knowledge of sports. Someone who shared our dedication to giving exposure to our exceptional athletes in our communities.

We are happy to announce our new Director of #TeamFYNSports – Mr. Kevin Hensley.

Kevin will be heading up our sport department. He will immediately launch a development plan to manage our reporting and new sports broadcasting in all the counties we cover.
